  2. QUESTION:
What treatment do dentists offer for bleeding gums?
I realise there may be more that one treatment available but plz could you name a few. Thanks so much:D

    • ANSWER:
That depends on what is causing your bleeding gums.

Bleeding gums are usually caused by gingivitis, a swelling of the gums. Gingivitis is a form of periodontal disease, which includes diseases of the gums, tooth sockets, etc. It’s usually caused by poor dental hygiene, a build-up of plaque bacteria along the gumline of the teeth. Here’s a Google health article that outlines what gingivitis is and what you can do about it:

      https://health.google.com/health/ref/Gingivitis

Bleeding gums are also, more rarely, caused by a hematological disorder like von Willebrand’s disease, a clotting disorder. This is fairly uncommon though, gingivitis is a much more likely cause of bleeding gums. If it is gingivitis then you will have to work with your dentist to correct the problem. That will include having your gumline scraped to remove the plaque that causes the gingivitis, and keeping up with your oral hygiene in the future to prevent it from coming back.

      Good luck!

Not too unusual. You need to apply pressure to stop the bleeding. Use a wet gauze or wet (clean) paper towel. Put pressure on with your finger (or by biting if possible) and hold for 20-30 min. A wet tea bag would work too. If the bleeding doesn’t stop, call the dentist. If it is gushing and you are unable to contact the dentist, go to the ER.

  12. QUESTION:
any home remedy for bleeding gums & bad smell?
i have bleeding gums due to this i have also bad smell.i went to doctor two tims for treatment but after some time it began again

    • ANSWER:
Yes, there are things you can do to help yourself.

If the problem is not too bad, you can use a drop of essential clove oil and a drop of tea tree oil on your toothbrush instead of toothpaste when you brush your teeth.

If the problem has advanced to the point where you are not brushing your teeth at least twice daily you can put two drops of tea tree oil and two of clove oil into 100 ml of water and swish it in your mouth for 30 seconds twice a day.

These oils will help kill the bacteria that is causing the problem and the smell.

You must also take Vitamin C — 500 mg a day to help strengthen capillaries and reduce bleeding.

  13. QUESTION:
What is the latest advance in the treatment of “pockets” in the gums surrounding our teeth?
I just happened to catch the last few minutes of a news featurette on the Fox TV News Channel the other night and would be interested in the full story. It featured a lady Dentist who was explaining a new treatment against “pockets” in the gums around the teeth. These pockets collect food matter, bleed and are trouble sources necessitating frequent professional dental cleanings. Is there indeed a new treatment?

    • ANSWER:
You may be talking about a packing, impregnated with antibiotics, that the hygienist can place into your pockets. It sometimes will work well. Ask the dentist about it.

  14. QUESTION:
i have gums bleeding all the day – visited so many doctors…but?
i visited so many doctors, but could not get the correct medicine/treatment.can anybody suggest any medicine / homecare. i suffer from more bleeding gums after a sleep.

    • ANSWER:
You said you visited many doctors…are these only medical physicians or have you seen a dentist? If you haven’t seen a dentist, you really must do that soon. Healthy gums do not bleed. Period. So it sounds like you have periodontal disease (gum infection) and left untreated, that will lead to loss of your teeth. Do you brush at least twice a day? Do you floss at least once a day? Do you notice more bleeding after brushing or flossing? These are all important questions you need to discuss with your dentist.
There are a few medical things I can think of that might contribute to this. Are you taking any blood thinners (Coumadin for example, or even daily aspirin)? Do you notice that you bruise easily on other places on your body? If so, you may have a blood disorder that decreases your bodies ability to clot bood and/or have a disorder that can cause blood vessels to become “leaky”, much more fragile than normal. One other thought is that you may be deficient in vitamins A and C, both are very important to good gum health.
Please check with a dentist right away. If you don’t get an answer from them, get a second opinion. This needs to be taken care of. Good luck.

  15. QUESTION:
    Bleeding gums…please help me?
I’ve been having a problem lately with my gums. Well, it’s not my gum exactly…you know where the inside of your cheek connects to your gum (on the top)? That’s where the problem is – it’s not my gums, really. It bleeds when I brush my teeth – that’s been going on for two days now. And it’s very painful after I brush my teeth, and then it’s still painful after that. But there appears to be no open sore or even anything that would indicate it would be painful.

Other information on it: It’s only on the right side of my mouth. And right where it is, I’ve had two surgeries. The surgeries were for 1) taking out an impacted baby tooth and putting a chain on the one behind it, and then after 6 months of having that tooth pulled down I went for 2) to expose the tooth (open up my gum and sew gauze in to keep the space open where the tooth was). This was in May, and I’ve had nothing major done there since then.

I do wear braces, I’m a few months away from the end of my treatment. The formerly impacted tooth has a bracket on it which is digging into my gum, but it’s not bleeding or painful there. It doesn’t appear that my braces really touch the place where it hurts, but they probably do a little bit. I’m wearing rubber bands on my teeth to help pull them into position, and it hurts less when I have them in.

I’m a little worried, but I have a periodontist (gum specialist) cleaning appointment in 1 or 2 weeks, and I’m planning on asking them then. However, I’m still scared. What could this possibly be? Has anyone ever had this happen? What do I do about it?
Well I’m only going to the gum specialist for cleanings because the dentist can only fit me in once every two years, and I don’t feel like becoming a new patient anywhere. I scheduled this appointment months before I had the problem lol. I just figure I might as well ask them since I’m going anyway.
Oh, and I already use sensodine and a soft toothbrush (because of the braces, I have to use stuff like that). That’s why I don’t know what the problem is…

    • ANSWER:
the reason you are bleeding so much is either from the surgery, or because you have sensitive gums. I have a very sensitive mouth, it hurts for me to get xrays, floss, brush my teeth, etc. i would try to switch to a sensitive toothpase such a sensodine and try that for about 2 weeks. if you dont see any results go to your dentist. you dont need to go to a gum specialist because you said it isnt exactly your gums. so go to your dentist and if you need to go to a different doctor they can refer you. also try and by a soft tooth brush. most people use medium because they think it cleans better but it just irritates your gums so buy a small soft brush.

  16. QUESTION:
Bleeding in gums around root canal treated teeth.?
I had a root canal treatment 4 years ago and then another one in the adjacent upper molar a few weeks ago. But I have now an infection in the teeth. went to many dentists and one of them suggested scaling as i had pockets in gums. after scaling everything went fine but now i feel infection, bleeding and discomfort again.

    • ANSWER:
      Endodontics

Endodontics basically means “within the tooth”. Doing “endo” on a tooth means taking out the pulp of the tooth which happens to contain the nerve. It never ceases to amaze me how such a tiny nerve can cause such pain! Doing “endo” is the same as doing a “root canal”.

  17. QUESTION:
Red, easily bleeding gums Gingivitis or worse?
I’ve been having a lot of dental issues recently and most of them have led to extractions and root canals. I have been told I have gingivitis which has bothered me before a bit, causing my gums to bleed when I brush and whatnot but it’s never been serious. Yesterday however, I noticed bright, dark redness (sounds like an oxymoron but it’s the only way to describe it) around a few of my bottom teeth which bleed very, very easily and it’s actually causing me quite a bit of pain. Another concern is–and it may not even be related, I’m not sure–is that my glands are swollen and I have a sore throat which started at roughly the same time as the redness and pain. My question is, is this just the gingivitis flaring up or is it something more serious? I’m trying to avoid an unnecessary trip to the dentist where he will just tell me to continue my current recommended treatment until it goes away. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
Usually gingivitis will cause your gums to bleed but is painless. The only time it becomes painful is when it becomes very advanced and is called periodontitis. At this stage it needs some treatment by the dentist to try to save your teeth. With swollen glands, this may be what you have causing the infection, or you may have a systemic disease causing these symptoms. If I were you , I’d see a periodontist for a second opinion and definitive diagnosis. Good luck.

  18. QUESTION:

I am spitting a lot of blood but the tooth feels better and not swollen. Will everything return back to normal and is juvinal gingivits serious and common among teenagers?

  21. QUESTION:
Very swollen and sensitive gums? Treatment?
I take very good care of my teeth. Meaning brushing with sonicare two times a day, flossing, and using mouthwash twice a day. But then I got the flu, which turned into a gut infection that caused many painful canker sores, and thrush, a yeast infection in the mouth. My gums got very red and swollen and sensitive. Every time I brush, they bleed a lot. I can’t figure out how this happened, but what can I do to fix this?
They don’t normally bleed, just all of a sudden. I’ve never had a cavity or any gum problems before..

    • ANSWER:
This is something we dentists like to call gum disease cause by bacteria gathering up round and in between teeth. Bleeding while brushing usually causes the gum to go thinner and that may cause tooth loss as there is no support to the teeth as the gums shrink rapidly but thankfully it can be treated easily with the right antibiotics. Your dentist will probably prescribe treatment for you.
Come disease is very common in people. After the treatment is complete I would suggest stronger mouth wash, toothpaste and floss. Also brush 2-3 times a day especially after meals for a short period of time just to stop the infection from coming back. Good luck! :)

  24. QUESTION:
Why does my gums bleed when I floss?
I’m a first time flosser so I expected my gums to bleed. But the thing is, I brush my teeth daily and they look ok (not yellow) and when I floss my gums just explodes and blood comes out. It also hurts like hell and sometimes I just want to quit. So my question is why does it bleed and what should I do (in terms of treatment or option) and should I continue flossing

    • ANSWER:
Your gums are bleeding because you have all kinds of debris and bacteria in the spaces between your teeth and gums. They’re sore, even if you can’t see or feel it.

Keep flossing and don’t worry, the bleeding will go away in a few days or a week or two. But floss every day, and be thorough. If a bunch of gunk comes out when you floss between two teeth, run the floss through again until no more gunk comes out.

You’ve been brushing, but brushing only cleans the tooth surface. Meanwhile, bacteria have been forming little pockets in your gums.

Flossing shouldn’t hurt, by the way. Work the floss in gently. If the gums hurt, that will clear up as they heal. But if the teeth hurt, then you have cavities and need to see the dentist.

You should brush and floss after your last meal or snack of the day, before you go to sleep. Don’t wait until morning, because bacteria can multiply astronomically in just hours.

However, you should also brush and floss after breakfast, before going to work or school for the day.

Im unemployed, broke and live in Cleveland. How can I get dental treatment?
My gums have been bleeding and today I noticed a back tooth is rotted. It looks pretty bad.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know your situation, but you may be eligible for medicaid. Medicaid covers important medical needs of most low income individuals. The benefits vary from state to state, but in most cases you can use medicaid for all of your medical needs. Go to the nearest Social Security Department in your area to find out if you are eligible. Also, the Health Department may have a branch that focuses on dental care. You might want to ask about that. I hope this helps. I know exactly where you’re coming from. It’s hard out here. You also might want to go to the second website I listed in my sources. Good luck!

a few time back I am suffering from this disease that my gums are slowly detaching from teeth and have a light pain as well as bleeding from gums which are swollen while brushing, Please advise or suggest the remedy preferably homemade and other than allopathic treatment

    • ANSWER:
This is called periodontal disease. Ask your dentist for advice on this. Do not ignore it as you could eventually lose your teeth if it is untreated. Also, there are bacteria in there that can spread to other parts of the body. There is NO home remedy.

  28. QUESTION:
How to get your gums unswollen?
Is there anyway I can get my gums to unswell like something I can rub on them because flossing and brushing just made my teeth whiter and less plaque but the thing I cant get is for my gums to unswell and thats necessary for my braces or the treatment will take longer.

Plz help me ;D I do brush my gums but it doesnt helpmuch and I dont see much improvement

    note: My gums don`t bleed

Normally the reason behind gums swelling is because of not flossing regularly, so tar and plague build up and cause pockets. try going to see your general dentist to see if you need perio scaling.

  29. QUESTION:
Home care/treatment for sore, inflamed gums? Help, please!?
I will say up front that I have been to a dentist and I have an appointment with a periodontist on September 23rd. I am looking for suggestions as what to do in the meantime.

Background information: For the past month (approximately), I have been experiencing a dull pain in the gums surrounding my back two molars on the lower left side of my mouth. This pain increased significantly after having a filling done on that side, but I am not sure if that relates. Anyway, since then it has been very difficult to floss and brush the area without extreme pain (though I have been doing so anyway). I have not been finding that the area is bleeding when I am flossing or brushing (and I am using proper technique), though my dentist mentioned that there was some bleeding when he used the probe to measure pocket depth around those teeth. The pain is most severe after flossing, but I have found that eating on that side causes slight discomfort and drinking water (or any liquid that kind of swishes around) also causes some pain.

I decided to go to the dentist after a month of very regular brushing and flossing. He visually and manually expected the area, used the periodontal probe and revealed that there were slightly deeper pockets in the area and that the gums appeared to be inflamed. They also took an x-ray and didn’t say one way or the other whether it revealed anything. In the end, he said that “something” is obviously going on and that my gums are inflamed, so he would feel more comfortable if I saw a specialist, As I mentioned, this appointment is on the 23rd of September.

I am looking for suggestions as to things I can do to either help the gums heal or at very least reduce the pain I am experiencing until I am able to go to the specialist. I have been flossing at least once a day and brushing after each meal, and using an antibacterial, alcohol-free mouthwash (Oral-B). When the pain is very severe (usually at night after flossing), I will occasionally use orajel.

Is there anything else I can do to help soothe or preferably heal the affected area? Responses from professionals or people who have had gum problems in the past would be very much appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
I agree with the above answers. An oral irrigator is your best bet for clearing out the infection. A top model that I use personally is called the HydroFloss. It has magnets in the tip that help kill the bacteria while pulsing water at high speed.

  30. QUESTION:
    Cure of Gum Bleeding?
What would be treatment or cure of gum bleeding?
Is it concern with a low factor in body, please let me know it
    Thank you

    • ANSWER:
The gum bleeding is usually due to local factors such as deposition of hard tartar or other soft deposits like plaque etc. on the teeth especially in areas inaccesible to brushing or due to lack of mouth hygiene. This results in inflammation of the gums leading to bleeding from the gums which may be one of the early symptoms of gum disease. No toothpaste of any kind or any other medicine would be of any help unless the cause is determined and treated by the Dentist. It would be best to consult a Dentist and get it treated rather than trying medicaments to suppress the symptoms.

  31. QUESTION:
I’m like the man in the joke: “My teeth are O.K., but my gums have to come out”?
Had a real good cleaning about a month ago..complete with deep scaling to remove tartar.
But the dentist said he wanted to see me again (about now) to check the condition of my gums, and
    that I had “pockets”
I have had, even since the cleaning, a fair amount of bleeding from the gums upon suction or flossing.
What, if any, is the treatment and prognosis for “pockets”?

    • ANSWER:
Depending on the depth of the pockets and if any bone loss is present, the treatment will vary. If not too severe, deep scaling and root planning will be done. More severe problems will need some type of surgical intervention. In both cases a strict home care program and regular preventive visits will be required to prevent future problems. If caught in earlier stages, the prognosis is good. I wish you good luck.

    • ANSWER:
Highly unlikely you have anything to worry about. Unless you are noticing any of the following signs you should be good.

When you go to the dentist, this is what they look for.

      1. Do your gum’s bleed easily?
      2. Are your gum’s are very red, tender and / or swollen?
      3. Can see pus in between your teeth and gum’s when they are pressed.
      4. Do your gum’s seem to be pulling away from your teeth?
      5. Do you have chronic bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth?
      6. Do you notice a change in your bite or in the way your teeth fit together.
      7. Are your teeth loose or they are separating?
      8. Has the fit of your partials or dentures changed? (for the older crowd)

      How Gum Disease is Caused
Gum disease is caused by plaque remaining around the gum lines of the teeth. The bacteria in plaque produces acids and other toxins that can destroy bone and gum tissue over a period of time.

Brushing twice a day is not enough to remove plaque from in between the teeth, so it is very important to floss your teeth daily.

If plaque is not removed, it will harden into a thick deposit called tartar. If tartar is allowed to remain on the teeth and below the gum line, it can lead to chronic infection and inflammation. The only way to remove tartar is to have your teeth professionally cleaned at your dental office.

If your dentist was in your mouth, and didn’t mention anything, you should be good. It’s always good to ask directly to be sure.

      Hope this helps!

I am currently pregnant but am having an abortion, unfortunately right from the start of the pregnancy i have suffered from bleeding gums and also two or more teeth have become wobbly. I have heard that you can get a certificate for pregnancy which means you can get free dental treatment while you are pregnant. because i am having a termination would i still have access to free dental treatment whilst i am still pregnant?
can i just add that the problems with my teeth are due to my pregnancy to start with and also i do not start work for two weeks and have not had an income for one and a half month because i cannot claim JSA if i am not actively seeking work

    • ANSWER:
if you saw a midwife or doctor and were going to continue with the pregnancy then yes you could claim they have to fill in a form that you send off
because your having a termination you cant the doc cant fill a form in stating your pregnant because they have to put a due date in your case they cant!

  36. QUESTION:
Gum cut flap bottom teeth, bleeding gingivitis for three weeks whats the cure?
I had gingivitis for about 3 weeks now. I dont drink or smoke.

Been brushing my teeth and my bottom middle teeth were bleeding. Went to the dentist and said i needed to brush to cure. So i thought right… all i need to do is bursh to cure. So i brushed everyday after every meal and after about a week and a half the pain started to die down. Then after a few days the pain drops down there is a cut in my gum and i can feel its flappy with my tounge. Then cut is below my bottom teeth on the root and everytime i brush it it irritates it and i have bleeding and few amounts of pain.

So the doctor told me to brush yet nothing is doing good, i even mouthwashed my teeth with anti plaque wash. Does the doctor not do a root gum clean? i had this before but this time they did not give me this treatment.

Whats wrong with my gums and what treatment would i need?

    • ANSWER:
I know, seems like a too easy an answer right? but guess what, your dentist is right.
brush that area real well, meaning well but not abusive. then floss in between the teeth and make sure the floss goes right under the gums and scrape all that crap out.
Gingivitis is caused by bacteria in your mouth that attaches on your teeth in between and under the gums.
You will find that it may make it bleed more ( a self defense mechanism that your gums have to flush anything that’s irritating it) but if you do it consistantly, especially before you go to bed, you will see an improvement in one week.

  37. QUESTION:
some kind of treatment for gum disease?
I noticed not that long ago that below my teeth, mostly on the bottom, that my gums started to receed slightly and turned a dark red. since i found this out about a week ago ive been brushing 3 times a day and flossing alot, and it seems to have helped a little, but does using listerine help at all? and any other tips would be helpful. i dont think its that advanced because my teeth arent loose and the gums have only gone back a little bit on the bottom and the top only got red, my gums bleed a little bit when i floss and brush but its started to go down since ive been brushing and flossing so much, and i have like 2 little sores on my gums that are starting to go away now too. so any tips would be greatly appreciated! thanks

  39. QUESTION:
Do i have to do canal root treatment?
last few months i had terrible period of my life. I did not took care myself well, i eat unhealthy sugary food all the time and did not took care of the cleanliness of my teeth. I had made the temporary filling before, and theres a pus socket on my gum where the filling is. The hospital dentist told me the filling is moving so, food maybe get into the hole. thats make the bacteria growth beneath my fillings and cause the pus socket exist. Then, i went to private dentist to get the throughout check on it. And they even took an x-ray of my whole teeth and show the bacteria in there and advice me to do canal root treatment. But, since i short of money, i did not do the treatment yet. Now, my gum not bleeding and the pus socket gone (since i brush my teeth 5 times a day + 2 times listerine), i wonder if i still need to do the canal root. I do really think those bacteria exist because of my bad eating habits before. and those costly canal root treatment are not necessary. as far as i know, canal root treatment is to make the nerves around the teeth die so there is no pain (?) or the treatment is to kill the bacteria?

but, still i need to do a permanent filling as the filling i had is decreasing. any further advice on filling?

    appreaciate all ur thoughts.

and my gum did not feel sore when the pus exist, or even now, i does not feel any pain at all.

    • ANSWER:
You are already doing everything you can do.

I am a dental hygienist, and I teach my pregnant patients about pregnancy gingivitis. Keep up the flossing, every day, brush your teeth and massage your gums with your toothbrush. Don’t brush/floss too hard, you could do more damage.

Yes, gingivitis can cause low birth weight, pre term babies. However, that is mostly from people who aren’t treating it at all.

You are doing everything right. Your gingivitis will clear up immediately after giving birth to a happy healthy baby.

      Good luck hun.

  41. QUESTION:
How long after quitting smoking will gums continue to bleed?
I’ve quit smoking after 20+ years, and now my gums are bleeding a lot whenever I brush and floss.

I do have some periodental disease and am in treatment for it (root planing, etc). I understand that this is happening because my smoking was just masking the symptoms of my bad gums. I am trying to take really good care of my gums and teeth now.

But I’m curious as to how long this bleeding is likely to last? Because it’s getting really disturbing, and while everything I’ve read promises that it will stop eventually, I am becoming impatient.

    Any guesses?
Um, I am seeing a dentist. I thought I’d made that clear. And my periodontal problems go rather beyond just gingivitis.

What I’m wondering is how long after quitting smoking does the recovery period (characterized by a higher propensity to bleeding gums) usually last? Are we talking a couple of weeks here, or more like a couple of months?
Cal, thanks! I have been still smoking the occasional one, though. That first one in the morning is so hard to give up! Still…35 a day down to 1 a day isn’t too bad, right? But okay, okay. I’ll try harder if it’s going to keep my gums bleeding longer.

    • ANSWER:
      Congratulations on quitting smoking!

Keep up your good hygiene and it should taper off in about two weeks. If you fall off the wagon and have the occasional cigarette here and there, that will delay the process.

If it keeps up for a month or gets worse instead of better over time, call your dentist.

  42. QUESTION:
    Gums hurt after hygienist appointment?
I hope you can help. I went to a different hygienist on Thursday to have my teeth cleaned. It was the first time, I was in a lot of pain having the back teeth cleaned, to the point of tears. I get my teeth cleaned every 3 months, as well as routine dental checks, because of medication and a condition I have. I have a small amount of gum disease, which has improved, but the hygienist was not aware of the improvement since it was my first visit. Since Thursday, my gums have been bleeding and there is a constant pain (not horrific – just nagging). My teeth/gums never felt like this after a hygienist appointment before – so is the the treatment I received or the gum disease in anyones opinion? The new hygienist happened to be done under NHS treatment, but I always have gone private in the past – I only went to the NHS (but asked for private appt) because of convenience this week. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
Two possibilities. Either she was a hygienist who was too rough, or she got in and did a very good job that was not done in the past. Your guess is as good as mine.

  43. QUESTION:
What is the difference between Periodontal Disease and Gingivitis?
About 5 or 6 months ago, I went to the dentist because my gums had started bleeding. As I brush my teeth twice a day and always at least rinse with water, I was just told to brush my gums more, or floss or use mouthwash. The symptoms went away, but now the bleeding is back (mainly when I floss) and 2 days ago I noticed my gum in between my two front teeth had swelled and was slightly red. Since yesterday, I have noticed another area of gum swelling and thin redness around about 3 or 4 more teeth. I don’t understand as it has all happened so quick. I am worried. If it is only Gingivitis then what stage does it sound like? Also, my dentist appointment is 5 days away. I have went to get Corsodyl mouthwash to try and last me until then and have just started my first treatment. I can make an emergency appointment, but I don’t know how necessary and appropriate it would be as I don’t really know how bad it is…any advice?

    • ANSWER:
Approximately 90 per cent of the adult people are affected by gingivitis. Most of these people remain oblivious about the silent development of gingivitis as it is initially painless. By and by, gingivitis can cause serious health implications. There can be swollen gums and bleeding while eating or brushing. If left unattended, gingivitis can even lead to indigestion and other tummy problems. Gingivitis can aggravate to periodontitis or pyorrhea. This is an extreme infectious situation when the teeth supporting bone starts eroding. Blisters can also appear. Pyorrhea signs are bad breath, painful gums and bleeding. The primary reasons of pyorrhea are excessive alcohol, smoking, poor mouth hygiene, poor nutrition, improper brushing, glandular disorders, chronic illness, and blood ailments. Smokers are more prone to develop pyorrhea and lose teeth than others. Note that bleeding gums can also be caused by brushing too hard or by using too hard a toothbrush.

  44. QUESTION:
My cat has been ill with herpes for 9 months please advice on treatment plans?
Hi I live in Italy and I have taken my cat to the vet many times in the past 9 months. My cat has herpes, she had a secondary respiratory infection but the vet tells me that has been treated and is now clear. Her tongue has ulcers and her gums are bleeding, she constantly has drool coming out of her mouth and her tongue is often sticking out of her mouth telling me that she cannot close it properly. She is eating but she is also very thin. She has just completed another 15 days of antibiotics (she was on the same antibiotics last month.) the same thing has happened after both courses of antibiotics, during the course she looks like she is getting better and then 3 days after she finishes them she starts getting worse again. She starts to drool and her breathing becomes raspy.my cat also smells, her breath is very smelly and she just gives off a bad smell. I though it could be because she can not clean herself but my dog licks her clean (a full bath) Also her coat is in poor condition. My vet has told me the herpes is in her gums and we may need to remove her teeth! He said that we can try cortisone injections to help control the symptoms. Is it normal for a cat to suffer for 9 months with this and is the course of treatment my vet is proposing normal? Please can some one give me a list of antibiotics that work or steroids that are known to work or any treatment plans that I can take to my vet. I just worry as in the surgery she has seen 2 different vets and both of them have come up with different treatment plans… I also feel so sorry for her as she is obviously suffering and I can not keep putting her on antibiotics (she is also very cross with me for forcing a pill in her very painful mouth and the antibacterial gel and the 1ml of liquid the vet made up for her! ) Any help would be much appreciated.
Here is what a vet wrote to me on another site I posted this question. A lot of people have said put the cat down, but I want to explore all options before doing so. If I thought she was at the end of the road I would put her to sleep:
Your cat’s problem is not uncommon. She has a hypersensitivity reaction to the bacteria that live on her teeth and in the space between the tooth and gum. While she is on an effective antibiotic the bacteria are fewer and thus the reaction improves. As soon as the antibiotic is discontinued or becomes ineffective she is right back where she started. Same with steroids (cortisone). You won’t be able to give enough to be effective.
The reason your vet suggests removing all the teeth is that will remove where the bacteria live in the mouth. In about 85% of the cats who have full mouth extraction, the improvement is dramatic and effective. And no more pills.
From what you have told me, I would agree with the vet that suggested extraction.

    • ANSWER:
Many cats – especially very young and older cats – are prone to catching upper respiratory infections, similar to colds in humans. These tend to be highly contagious, so it’s best to keep an infected cat away from others (if possible).

Respiratory infections can be hard on kittens and elderly cats, occasionally resulting in death. And even for otherwise healthy and strong cats, respiratory infections are very unpleasant – just as a cold or flu is unpleasant to you.

Besides the meds from your vet, you can also treat this at home by giving your kitten Respiratory Aid. The herbal extracts in Respiratory Aid have been carefully combined to provide the ultimate in relief to your cat’s breathing problems and other symptoms:

Helps fight upper-respiratory infections in cats
Clears nose of congestion, eases breathing
      Strengthens cat’s immune system
Treats colds, bronchitis and similar conditions
      Promotes healthy lungs and sinuses

    NHS dentist question pls help?
I have gum disease, before when i brush twice a day, i used to see some improvement and no bleeding. BUT now no matter how many times i brush my teeth and floss, my gums bleed in the morning, during the day and night. I am so worried. Last time i saw my dentist, he did like 5 min cleaning and suggested i should see the NHS dentist as they would offer better treatment. i requested for tablets to help me or sugest any medication, he didint wanna give it to me ! why !?! I had to wait for almost 3 weeks to get an appointment and when i went for my appointment, they did check my gums, tooth and x-ray etc and they said it is not VERY bad!! i was like what ??! they said currently (August) all their trainee students are on holiday, they would call me end of sept to start the treatment!!!

My gums are bleeding everyday am worried!!! specially the front teeth. they are receding and becoming sort of brown. all my gums are swallon too!

    • ANSWER:
Where exactly were you when they suggested regular contact with an NHS dentist would be better for you?

Sound like a dental school or training facility! This sounds like you are not actually registered as a NHS patient where you are going.
In which case listen to what they are saying to you. They are saying that you need continuity of care with one person rather than seeing lots of different trainee dentists.

There is no medication or tablets that will help gum disease other than good oral hygiene, regular contact with a dentist and hygienist. The same dentist on a regular basis gets a better idea of your mouth and can follow through.
You have a higher risk of heart disease with gum disease and this is why it is so important that you listen to what they suggested,

  47. QUESTION:
so scared of the dentist and 14 weeks pregnant?
I am so scared of the dentist but i need a cracked filling refilled and the appointment was for 2day but i cancelled it and now have a new appointment in 9 weeks time.
I am not in any pain and i have corsodyl mouthwash which i use 3 times a week.
but i heard that during pregnancy your teeth and gums are more at risk of disease and i already have bleeding gums.
How can i get over this fear!! plus bein pregnant does not help as im scared of any injections and treatment which might harm baby

    • ANSWER:
I completely understand your fear of dentists, I hate going to the dentist. I had to visit one on my last birthday for a root canal treatment. It’s not an ideal way to spend your birthday but I had to. So think of it this way – what’s the worst thing that can happen if you don’t go, you will end up making the cracked filling worse and will eventually have to go anyway. It’s similar to being scared of labour/delivery when pregnant, you really can’t do much, the baby has to come out somehow, Your cracked filling needs to be attended to so try and focus your mind on getting this done.

Speak to the dentist before the visit, let them know you are pregnant, they should tell if there are extra measures put in place for patients who are pregnant. e.g wearing a protective gown during x-ray etc. Remember it has to be done and once it’s done, you can put the experience behind you.

Good luck and all the best with the pregnancy.

      Best of luck

  48. QUESTION:
Has anyone had 100% success treating gum disease/perionitis with natural products?
I have advancing gum disease, no bleeding or soreness, but gum recession is dramatic.
I can not afford treatment at this time. There seems to be many advertisments for natural products that have cured this disease without invasive root planning/scaling. The ads have glowing testimonials and obviously the cost is much less than conventional treatment. I would love to know if anyone has used any of these treatments, and if they are avail in Aus.

    • ANSWER:
there is help..gum disease is bad as one can lose perfectly fine and healthy teeth due to the bone lose accompanying it and the resultant loosening and eventual loss of teeth,

But there is help although I have no personal experience, I do believe in the integrity of the men who have helped others. One was highly spiritual and would not IMO lie. I have strong faith in both men..Dr John R Christopher (herballegacy.com) and Dr Richard Schulze (herbdoc.com)

On a rare series of taped lectures given by Dr Christopher when he was teaching students, he tells of a woman depressed who had just been told they had to pull all her healthy teeth due to gum disease and by happenstance, she found the answer and to the dentist’s amazement kept all her teeth.

The actual film may be at google videos if you type in his name as there are several on there but I am not sure if the one in question is online or not. In it a student also verifies what Christopher said by telling his own story about the herbs which helped.

Luckily, the story of the woman is recounted at this link which also lists the formula that saved her teeth and rid her of the gum disease

      http://www.herballegacy.org/Gums.html

It is the herbal tooth and gum powder (That includes the oak bark and is more comprehensive and was used in other successful cases) and you can buy bulk herbs in as little as one ounce or sometimes even less so it should be fairly reasonable in price but cheaper if you get locally at health food stores to save shipping costs.

If using the other recommendations he gives at this link above when you read it, the (snh and the number in parentheses) this sch stands for his book “the school of natural healing” –a wonderful book available often through eBay, Amazon, libraries or health food store..the number refers to the page number..but if you want the proportions to a particular formula in that book, I could look it up for you if you email me as I know how stressful this must be,

,I have severe bruxism myself and am grinding my teeth so low I fear loss and need to pull eventually..on one my gums is higher than the teeth as I ground the teeth so low and it is uncomfortable and they had to grind my upper teeth down to relieve the pain of the gums being bitten all the time and my teeth are all getting shorter and shorter and this is upsetting and scary, so I empathize.

Scroll down to the bottom for the testimony and also read the entire page and here is where the proportions of the formula is found (he has the words HHH and a number after it and that stands for this book linked below and the page number where the formula is found so one can get the right proportions of how much herbs of each to use.

      http://www.amazon.com/Herbal-Home-Health-Care-Christopher/dp/1879436035

You can usually make herbal tinctures and mixtures at real savings..I generally save 90% over store costs

But I think I may have the formula found in the home health herbal in another book of his I have as I have used it before..if you are interested, you can email me and I will look it up and send the proportions to you. You can then buy the bulk herbs at a health food store or coop or online. For best results, try to get organic or wild crafted herbs as they are 7-10 times higher in the pytochemicals that cure and prevent diseases.

In addition, I recommend this formula and the suggestions by Dr Schulze who was the leading student of Dr Christopher and improved many of Christopher’s formulas and so forth in his 20 year underground clinic working with people dying and incurable with many miraculous results..he recommends using his tooth and gum formula with a water pick for best results (sometimes these can be found at thrift stores and you can still find replacement brushes if tight on funds although he says you can use it without water pick).

I also recommend highly his films which can be seen by going to google and typing in the words Richard Schulze and clicking on videos..then watch the save your life series (originally they cost 0 but someone has kindly posted them).

Go here for your gum disease and order the tooth and gum formula and use both of these men’s formulas– Christopher and Schulze’s (or maybe just one)– and hopefully you will have the same good results others had..
