      The most obvious thing would be periodontal disease which will cause bone loss and will eventually lead to class III mobility and loss of attached gingiva. Another thing that can cause mobility is trauma to the teeth, whether from external forces, such as an accident, or from grinding or clenching the teeth. For example a person that has an edge to edge bite, and constantly clenches and grinds will eventually end up with wear facets or loose teeth or both.

      It is simply just the way their mouths are. Some people have small teeth and therefore tend to show more of their gingiva. It could also, possibly be that they have inflamed gingiva causing it to be overgrown.

      Yes, it will heal pretty much.

      Gradually the swelling will go down and since you went to the dentist you must have gotten or must be getting the cleaning done as well.

      So, the cleaned surface along with the healed gums will eliminate the loose tissue and allow for reattachment.

      Give it 2 / 3 weeks.

      You have to floss though on top of brushing and flossing.

    i always loved making my gingiva bleed with my nails or a sharp object since i was little. i just love that little pain.       Doing that stunt can be dangerous in the long term. In some cases, the traumatized gums might react to the tears and pinches by inflaming itself more and more.

      This inflammation, which if prolonged, can lead to gingivitis, or, even worse, periontitis, which can eventually cause you to lose all of your teeth (since this advanced gum disease destroys the underlying bone structure of the teeth).

      The best bet is to throw away all sharp objects and removing them away from the room.

      You have an infection below the margin of your gum-line.
      See a dentist. This can cause you to loose the tooth.

      First of all, receding gums occurs when the underlying bone has receded first. This is caused by severe or chronic inflammation due to infection from bacterial plaque or tartar on your teeth and gums. It can get worse if you do not get treatment to remove the source of infection. This is how the majority of people lose their teeth early. The bone recedes, then the gums, the the teeth get loose, and eventually have to be removed. Grafting can be done, which will decrease sensitivity by covering the exposed roots. This is very expensive, but not nearly as expensive as losing the teeth and having to have them replaced. The insurance coverage will depend on the particular insurance. Good luck and don’t put it off.

    Cat has severe inflammed mouth gingiva with bloody ulcers. Cortisone/antibiotics help temporarily. Any help?
    My vet has treated him with fluids, time release antibiotics and methypredinisolne injections (20 mg) and .35 (Covenia). This seems to help for 1-2 months. But, it always returns. He is eating Royal Canine Rescue canned food and loves it. Can’t eat dry food. Help!!

      Diabetes and kidney problem go hand in hand with gum and teeth problems. But it can also be a food allergy. If your vet keeps treating with antibiotics all he is doing is treating a symptom – that keeps coming back. You’ve got a couple of options: 1) ask for a blood workup to help determine the core problem 2) try a homeopathic remedy to strengthen his immune system.

      The first is a lot harder on your bank account but may actually help with a diagnosis. The second is easier on the cash and can be given over a long period of time with out negative side affects that antibiotics bring.

      I’m inclined to say dump the royal food too in favor of a raw meat diet. He may actually have a food allergy.

    i had a root canal treatment on my mandibular first molar, 7 years ago…and the doctor did not insist on wearing a crown so i left the tooth unprotected. It contained a kind of clear fluid within it, which got drained by itself in 2 days time…but i still experience pain (which is actually diminishing) in that area..i’ve still not visited the dentist…

      A crown after a root canal treatment is primarily to prevent a fracture of the tooth which can happen quite frequently. When left open for long after root canal treatment the cleaned and filled root canal space will get reinfected as the filling materials cannot give you a 100% seal for a longtime. If that lump u mentioned is at the upper half of your gingiva the chances that it is a vertical root fracture is high and will warrant removal of the tooth(will require and radiograph and clinical examination to confirm). To sum up your problem is mostly a fracture of the tooth which will require an extraction or if you are lucky it moght not be that and a re-treament of the root canal would suffice. Visit a good endodontist for good results

      IF your are truly brushing and flossing daily, then you should now have a problem with gum disease. So, I would assume that you simply bruised the gum tissue when you chomped into the apple. See if it heals in a week or two. If not, see your dentist.

After a few weeks the periodontist remove some of the gingiva with the use of a cauterizer and put some white substance as a bandage. What do you call this white substance? What is the procedure in doing gingivectomy? What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? What will the periodontist do after a week?

      The primary benefit of the gingivectomy is that you’ll now be able to adequately clean your teeth. If it was not done, you would have deep pocketing so that you could not clean your teeth, and the likely result would be that your gingivitis would continue. A secondary benefit is that the appearance will be improved.

      The rubbery stuff covering the gums is called a periodontal packing or dressing. It keeps you more comfortable while you’re healing, and it helps keep the gums from growing back to where they were. Likely, when the dressing comes off after one week, you’ll be mostly healed. Things may still be somewhat tender.

      The procedure of gingivectomy is basically to remove the excess gum tissue. It sounds as if you have had good care from your dentist and periodontist. I think you’ll be happy with the results. Take care.

      This normally happens on wisdom teeth, and the gingiva won’t just go away on its own. The standard recomendation is to get the wisdom teeth removed. This flap of gingiva is not only annoying and painful when you chew, but it can also trap bacteria and become infected. If you have already gotten your wisdom teeth removed and this is still happening, I would go see a periodontist. A periodontist can remove the excess gingiva for you.

    Eruption blister or abscess in 5 year old?
    Had appointment with dentist for complaint of tooth pain in a dead central incisor. Dentist said that adult central incisor is about to erupt, which may be causing the pain.

    A few days ago, a purple swollen area was noted on the gingiva high above the tooth. Now, there is a substantial swelling with a white dot. There is pain when pressed on.

    I am guessing that this is an abscess even though X-rays were taken and the dentist did not detect any infection. Does this sound like an abscess?

      sounds to me like it is just the adult tooth is comming through remember when the child was first getting teeth the gum would swell and turn white before the tooth popped through… same thing here but be sure to keep a check on their temp bc i will go up with an infection but a low temp might be the inflamation from the tooth comming in as well like when the child was a baby if it doesnt get better call the dentist again but i think its fine also try otc pain meds for the child and orajel to help

    How Can I Clean Teeth (not your typical question believe me)?
    I’m not talking about my own, I’m talking about a full set of human teeth I have. I believe they were ripped out of some dead guys mouth, but not recently, because there are bits and peices of rotten gingiva on the tooth.

    This is not a joke question, I’m a student in the Philippines, and these people are screwed up, and require me to have a full set of human teeth in my Dental Orientation class, in Pre-Dentistry. Anyway if anyone knows what I can do to make these teeth really clean, white and shiny looking tell me, and don’t forget it doesn’t matter how sensitive it would make the teeth, because buddy is already dead, and 6 feet deep.

      scrub the teeth hard with baking soda and soak them in a mild aquious bleach solution, repeat baking soda, then polish them up with a tooth polish like pearl drops

My periodontist thinks I might be clenching at night just simply based on my personality. She wants me to get a mouth guard that you put on only the top teeth at night. There’s a chance I could be clenching, but I’m not sure. I know I did wake up with my teeth together real tight but that was only one night this week. Considering all I have just told you do you recommend the mouth guard or would I be wasting my time and money?
    I also want to add that I don’t have periodontal disease. My gums are in good health other than the receding. The periodontist has verified this. I also don’t have gingivitis.

      Honestly it sounds like your best bet is calling around to other dentists. Someone should be able to see you asap with a broken tooth like that. Sometimes if it’s too close to the gingiva you could have even fractured your root. You definately need to call around to other dentists and get seen asap. Maybe even call your office and ask them if they recommend anyone local… that might make them magically find a spot for you. Then you can get out of pain and find a more caring office. :)

    My wisdom teeth gum is swallowing and it doesn’t actually hurts. But sometimes i can feel pressure underneath it and it irritates me so bad. But I can’t go to the dentist probably until fall. My gingiva’s are also dense sometimes because when i brush my tooths then they start bleeding lightly sometimes or get red from my wisdom teeth swallowing area. So does using mouth washer helps or should I use something more?

      Corsodyl is good mouth wash that should stop your teeth from bleeding so much. But sounds to me you should seek more professional help. Also cut down on sugar.

    How come some people swear by brushing their teeth with soap rather than toothpaste? What are the effects of not using fluoride? What are the effects of the soap on the gingiva, and why do people complain that the soap makes them sore?

      Uh, whoever swears by this are pretty stupid. Fluoride is a mineral found in toothpaste, and it prevents tooth decay and cavities.
      So yeah, using soap may maximise your susceptibility to tooth enamel decay, I reccommend you use toothpaste instead of soap to brush your teeth.

      Most of the time it happens due to Vitamin B Complex deficiency…..namely, Vit. B12 and B9.

      Without seeing this it’s tricky to guess, although if it is a new appearance in your mouth I would think a tori (bony prominence) is unlikely – possibly a mucocele or blocked minor salivary gland.

      These would normally be quite small and full of clear fluid – around 1-2mm in size – although they can swell a little larger when filling with saliva. Often these will resolve by themselves if a few days.

      Antibiotics are unlikely to be needed, unless the liquid that is coming from the bubble is pus – if this is the case, the problem is more serious, and attention from your dentist should be gained as soon as you can.

    HELP! Will having oral surgery affect my menstrual cycle?
    About a week ago, I had gingiva surgery (gum tissue grafting) and was heavily sedated. I have also been taking amoxicillion since then. Is it possible that my period is late because of that? PLEASE HELP! I’m freaking out!!

      no but freaking out can cause it to be late or even miss your period totally are you sexually active? if so you do know antibiotics weakens birth control pills? so if you are on them & had sex you could be pregnant too Sorry GOOD LUCK

    I’ve seen a lot of questions on here regarding dark gums…

    Pigmentation of the gums (dark color seen at the gingiva) is generally physiological (normal) depending on the person’s race. African Americans present more pigmentation, thus gums may have a darker color, especially in some areas. This is generally seen symmetrically (present both in right and left sites).

    Sometimes, darker color may happen due to a foreign body. It generally occurs due to amalgam restoration materials staying around following tooth extraction, etc. [It looks like a tattoo.]

    And sometimes, they may be related to a local pathology affecting melanin-releasing cells
    It may also be related to systemic health problems, especially related to blood cells.     I have had a caree in the right 1st premolar, which then become painful after food particals got trapped inside.
    This was then treated using a root canal proceedure.
    Briefly afterwards and before this, there has been tenderness and what seems to be a small lump leading to generalised aching under between the orbicularis oris and the 1st premolar, with pain extending down to the depressor labii inferioris.
    After inserting my finger into the sheath of skin that jions the orbicularis oris to the gingiva, when pressing down near to where the 1st premolar is above; I can feel what feels like a small bump about 2mm long. This appears to be related to the pain, but the pain still extends downwards.

    Outside the mouth, pressing on the chin/jar area to where to the 1st premolar is above; give rise to pain and severe tenderness.

    What do you think this may be?

    Could it be an absess that is near the jaw?

    My cat has gingivitis and I’ve tried to brush her teeth but they bleed and she cries cause she doesn’t understand what I’m doing. Her gums are nice and pink, but near the free gingiva close to the cirvical 3rd of the crown is where she has bright red gums that bleed.

    She’s a mouth breather and I don’t know how to prevent decay. I don’t know what food would be best suited for her to prevent plaque and calculus buildup, or one that doesn’t contain fermentable carbohydrates. What do I do??? I don’t want her to get periodontal disease.

    De-worming a head-shy horse???
    I have a 8 year old Arabian Mare. She was previously owed by an agressive male who spent no time with her. I have spent countless hours loving and working with her and got her over the head shyness. I was able to give her Bute paste and de-wormer just fine. Now the farrier whom I love brought a helper who put a stud cahin over her gums and this severed the gingiva. How painful….He will get my feedback real soon. this was about 1 month ago. Now when I try to get near her mouth she throws her head and just about pulls my arm out of socket or head butts me! I have to get the de-wormer in her. Any ideas??? Please help

      Mouths heal pretty quick, so pain is likely not her reason anymore, but she may not believe that. This answer is probably not the best for you, as you know you have a problem and it is your horse and you have the time to try to work her through it – and some terrific ideas to do it. This will work in a pinch, though. I have a friend who has a horse that has been in her family for 15 years and to this day she will not let you get near her with a needle or wormer. She has not been abused, she just doesn’t like it. I used the old blindfold trick on her a few years ago…they have to do it every time, but she stands fine. Use a pretty good sized towel and tuck both ends under the halter so it does not fall off in the middle, but this has worked on many of mine over the years, so consider it if all else fails.
