My friend John got some porcelain veneers about six months ago. Now he says that his wife complains about a bad smell out of his mouth. First they did not see a connection between the veneers and the problem but that is what can happen sometimes.

John had six of his front teeth fixed with porcelain veneers. He was not happy with his smile anymore. He had got some bad teeth, mostly because of wine and smoking. He also had a little gap between his two front teeth and wanted to lose it.

He went to a good cosmetic dentist in Washington and it did not take long to have it all fixed. That is the advantage of porcelain veneers. It goes incredibly fast and looks great. The downside is the high costs but it was worth the price.

      You could have a condition known as gingivitis; this is usually caused by a buildup of plaque on the teeth, which in turn allows bacteria to grow and cause inflammation and bleeding. It’s fairly easily eliminated by good brushing, and stimulation of the gums on a regular basis. Another possibility is a lack of vitamin C. Vitamin C is important for making blood vessel walls strong; if your diet lacks sufficient vitamin C, you may experience problems such as bleeding gums and bruising on your body. This was a problem with sailors on long ocean voyages back a couple of centuries ago, when fresh fruits and vegetables were unavailable, and often resulted in tooth loss. I’d say brush more often, use a gum stimulator on your gums, and drink a bit of orange juice and/or take supplements. If that doesn’t work, then it’s time to see your dentist again.

      Everyone who want to prevent bleeding gums should avoid hard and fast brushing, hard diets and snacks which can cause injury such as chips, sour foods or drinks, hot drinks, carbonated acid drinks, sticky chocolates, pain-killers, blood thinners and unnecessary medication. You should rinse mouth with mouth fresheners often. Tobacco chewing, betel nut chewing and smoking is something that you should also avoid. Take care of plaque deposits by proper cleaning and visiting dentist regularly. Use soft bristle toothbrushes to brush gently and use vitamin supplements in case of deficiency. Use well-balanced nutritious diet, proper mastication, and brush away the food particles in the mouth after every meal. Oral hygiene and dental health is very important as well. Try to gargle with salty warm water after every meal.
      TAKING CARE OF BLEEDING GUMS:
      Apply gentle pressure for compression, but if bleeding persists apply ice or take ice-cold drinks or juices to stop bleeding. Do not brush the teeth; instead you can rinse with salty warm water. Keep away from all new medication and visit your physician or dentist at the earliest opportunity to rule out the causes. It is important to visit the dentist at least once every six months for plaque removal.Try to avoid using commercial, alcohol-containing mouthwashes, which aggravate the problem. Floss teeth twice a day to keep plaque from building up on your teeth. Eliminate snacks between meals and reduce carbohydrate intake to help prevent plaque build-up on teeth. Use an oral irrigation device on the low setting to massage the gums, and maintain a balanced, healthy diet.

      Nothing. Just be careful brushing the area and use some warm saline rinses for a couple of days. By then it should be all healed up.

      bleeding gums can be caused by Injury or trauma such as improper brushing and flossing and irritation from acidic drinks and medicines. Gum disease as you have bypassed. Mouth sores can cause sore gums and clotting disorders of the blood and hemophilia, and leukaemia can cause bleeding as well. Liver and kidney disorders and vitamin C which is low is another possible cause. Being pregnant can make your gums bleed from time to time too. Taking pills can make your gums bleed which thin the blood. So it can be caused by many many things.

    what can we do about severe bleeding gum starting two days after dental visit for cleaning?
    My husband had teeth cleaned 5 days ago. Three days ago the gum around on tooth started bleeding quite heavy, he is on blood thinners. We have been trying since Fri nite to get this stopped and now it is almost midnite Sat nite. bleeding is continuing. we are rinseing with salt water then drinking an iced drink followed by iced gause in mouth, cannot reach dentist till mon morning. how can we stop this.

      I am assuming he is on coumadin. If it won’t stop and the bleeding is severe, you may need to go to the ER, no one else will be open. A lot of the things you’re doing is rinsing and removing clotting factors by friction. Try leaving it be for a while. I would have his physician reevaluate his medication dosage, he may be on too much.

      actually, bleeding gums is not a “SURE SIGN OF GINGAVITIS”

      however, it is definitely a warning sign that you are not brushing/flossing good enough and it could LEAD TO gingavitis. i know this because i saw the dentist last week and i have the same problem. he said i do not have gingavitis but that i could get it if i don’t start brushing and flossing more thoroughly.

    After 35 years of smoking I quit before one year. I have noticed my gum bleeding even after one year of quiting smoking and in the morning my mouth is full of blood because of that.

      It sounds like you have advanced gum disease (periodontitis) that is unrelated to smoking. Unfortunately only with treatment by the dentist will you be able to stop this from getting worse and losing your teeth. See a dentist and the sooner the better for your chances for a cure.

    What do I do about a bruised and bleeding gum?
    My dog just jumped up and scratched my gums. The small piece of skin between my top 2 front teeth and it is now bleeding. It’s a little purple. I’ve dabbed at it with a cotton swab and I’ve drank salt water but it’s still slightly bleeding. It looks as if that little piece of skin between my teeth could come off IF I pulled it hard enough, but I don’t plan on trying. My question- is this serious? What should I do about it?

      It’s not a problem. It’s not clotting faster because of the location (your wet mouth). You should be more concerned that your dog has been in your mouth. Dogs do not have the same germs as people. They clean their buttholes with their tongues. They can eat small bones because the bacteria in their stomachs are so acid that it actually dissolves the small bones. Larger bones may get stuck in their throat–so, don’t feed dogs bones. If you allow a dog to lick your face long enough, you’ll get a rash. In other words, go brush your teeth and mouth–and don’t allow your dog in your mouth again.

    Will Colgate Time Control also help younger adults with bleeding gum problems?
    I hear about Colgate Time Control which is supposed to stop gum recession from the effects of aging and strengthen gums. Will this have a similar benefit for those that are younger but have issues with sore or bleeding gums at the moment? If not what alternatives are there?

    • ANSWER:
      Honestly I have no idea as to what toothpaste would be helpful. But salt water may help and proper care of teeth would likely prevent these gum issues.
      I would recommend going to a dentist if they haven’t yet, for they could have gingivitis which has those symptoms and if left untreated may progress into periodontal disease. The disease is caused my tartar build up underneath the gum line and causes soreness, bad mouth odor, bleeding, receding of gums and the eventual loss of teeth do to the deterioration for the gum’s attachment to them. Oral surgery can be necessary, which would be quite expensive. More than going to a dentist earlier on for a cleaning and diagnosis.
      Please floss and brush teeth twice daily and see a dentist immediately if this is a possibility. If they get periodontal disease and it progresses for too long the damaging effects will be permanent not to mention the fact that they will be more likely to develop oral issues than someone never having been affected

    I got a Penicillin shot in the butt today and now my infected tooth/gum is bleeding.?
    Is this normal to have my gums bleeding and basically draining? I’m thinking it’s okay because of the shot I got today, it’s clearing up the infection. But I can’t find any info on this directly so maybe someone knows the answer already.

    I need to get this cracked tooth removed but in the meantime until I can get an appt they gave me this penicillin shot.
    It’s like something in my gums between my tooth ruptured and gooey blood is just sitting there. I tried using a q-tip to move some of it and it just came up light and gooey and really didn’t get any of it so I left it alone. but it’s not actually bleeding like running down my teeth/mouth, it’s just sitting there and you can tell that a piece of my gum ruptured because it’s kinda covering one of my teeth. I think this has to do with the antibiotics shot I recieved because they gave me such a large dose to kill the infection asap.

    It just looks weird and I’m like hey what’s wrong with my gums. Also I’ve noticed a few large pimples on my body just waiting to be popped, looking like they’re about to explode, not big or anything, but looking like it’s gonna pop by itself any second, I wonder does this have to do with the penicillin working through my body and pushing out any kind of pus/abscess/infection, anyone know anything about this? thanks.

      I’m a dentist.

      I seriously doubt you were given Penicillin intramuscularly like that. It’s conceivable that you were, but very, very unlikely.

      That being said, let us assume that you did indeed receive a dose of Penicillin. Penicillin can indeed affect your ability to clot due to the fact that it kills intestinal bacteria involved with vitamin-K uptake (if memory serves), but this effect is usually subclinical unless you have some sort of clotting disorder or are on Coumadin. In general, though, bleeding is rarely a consideration when deciding to prescribe or administer Penicillin. Hence, the bleeding of your gums is almost certainly not connected with your gluteal dose of Pen.

      Now, on to the other issue. You stated that your gums are bleeding and draining. Those are different things. Bleeding is bleeding. “Draining” refers to an infection that “drains” into another cavity–such as a gingival abscess that has a hole that connects it with the oral cavity, through which there may or may not be pus exiting.

      It sounds to me like you have a very bad dental abscess, and the offending tooth needs to be removed promptly. Obviously, see your dentist as soon as you can.

      it may be inflamed, do you have any calculus?
      if yes you have to go to dentist he can remove it and the bad odour will be gone tooo.
      if not you may have calcium deficiency, or vitamine deficiency, also chek the physician

    Why is my gum bleeding only above one tooth?
    Over the past few days, I have had a discomfort and bleeding (when I brush) above a tooth on top. I do not see signs of infection or a bump (like when you need a root canal). I do typically have a sore issue with this spot — due to sinuses — but the bleeding and swelling worries me. What could be causing this? I don’t recall any injuries and i have good hygiene (except i don’t floss all the time). How long should i wait before going to the dentist?

    • ANSWER:
      Just because there are no bumps or anything, doesn’t mean there’s no infection. You might have slight infection in your gums; the bump comes with infection in the tooth. Small infections or irritations in the gums are usually caused by something that gets stuck in them, such and popcorn kernels or even toothbrush bristles. It could also be possible that you have a bit of decay below your gumline. The only way to know for sure is to see a dentist. but if you would rather hold off, I suggest swishing around with a mix of peroxide and water. Hydrogen peroxide is a great debriding agent, plus the mixture will get rid of bacteria. This way if it is a minor gum infection or irritation, the peroxide rinses will clear it up. if it doesn’t get better after a few days of doing this or it gets worse, please see a dentist so they might x-ray the are to find out what is going on.       You have gum disease, either gingivitis or a more advanced case called periodontitis. Your gums are infected and inflamed. Normal healthy gums will not bleed from touching, brushing, and flossing. You will need to see the dentist to determine how advanced it has become and what type of treatment will be needed.     I have a bleeding gum, is it okay to leave it untreated?
    This morning I noticed my gum was bleeding while I was eating =S Its not sore neither is it itchy at all, it’s like it doesn’t exsist. Though when I looked into a mirror it was so clear at front downer gum, it’s small yet very visible, bloody red. Well, I had this last year but on the top of my front teeth, which I didn’t do anything and by time it disappeared. Now I have never been to a dentist ever in my entire life so I’m wondering is it really okay to leave it untreated?

    and I wash my teeth daily (though I admit my tooth brust is a bit rough will definately change it from now on even though Im not sure if it’s the reason for this)

      Try getting a soft toothbrush and that might help. If you are worried find a dentist. NHS dentists are free, and are very friendly :D

    Are Bleeding gums automatically a sign of gum disease?
    Everytime I brush my teeth, my gums bleed. I do have a toothbrush with hard bristles. However, if there is a chance of gingivitus I would like to get it fixed.

    • ANSWER:
      Bleeding is a sign of gum disease and is NOT normal. I would think that you might be brushing just a little too hard, but it would actually hurt if you were brushing too hard, and if it is happening EVERY time then I know it is not from something else. While some medications could cause bleeding gums and dilantin hyperplasia (gingival overgrowth), you didn’t say you were taking any medications so I assume you probably just have gingivitis. It is very common, and many people think it is because their gums are weak or soft, however that is not so. Healthy gingiva should be firm and pale pink, not red or swollen. You need to see your dental hygienist to get a cleaning and treat it before it becomes worse. Also, switch to a soft bristled toothbrush. I would also recommend using Listerine to help flush your gingiva from bacteria under your gumline. Be sure and brush at least 2x a day and floss as well:)

      I had this problem when i was 15, just let it all grow out fully, go see your dentist so he/she may pull it and the adult tooth will move into place over several months to a year

    is this gum bleeding normal after wisdom tooth removal?
    I had 3 wisdom teeth pulled out on Monday, 2 on the left and the top right. the gum on the right stopped bleeding right away and hasn’t even been hurting, but the 2 on the left are still bleeding. when I rinse my mouth with salt water with the syringe and I spit it out its still bloody, should I phone the dentist and get him to check it out, or leave it a little longer?

      Yeah, you’re fine.. I was bleeding for like 2 or 3 days straight, oh and it’s also very painful for a day or so.

      And they ONLY gave me Tylenol-3′s and NO vicadin!

    Can gingivitis(gum bleeding) lead to any bump on the gum jaw?
    It is close to the lower gum(bottom teeth) NIt dosent look like a gum ball. its a small bump with a little white dot in the middle. My gums have been bleeding for 2 months. I hope it is not a disease. I am a virgin if that helps.

      You probably have a gum
      Infection and approximately 90% of people get this in their lifetime. It will be safer to see a dentist as they will give you some antibiotics until then rinse your mouth with salt water and take some ibuprofen to reduce the swelling. All the best :-)

      Try using mouth wash. I have had a few gum problems too, and i always use mouth wash after i brush my teeth and i havent had any problems since ive been using it regularly, listerine is a good brand.

      In you or the dog?

      Anyway, it shouldn’t. It’s probably gingivitis or some sort of injury. If the pressure was enough to be making the dog’s gums bleed, then you would also have heard some coughing and choking.

    Gum bleeding come again after deep cleaning?
    I have had a deep cleaning one month again, and my gum became pink and healthy. Scheduling to see the doctor after 3 months. I brush three times a day, floss every time and use periomed 1-2 a day. These two days i notice that one of the gum bleeds again while i brushing and flossing, what should i do? I am so worried that my PD comes back again.
    I mean i had the deep cleaning last month.

    • ANSWER:
      No need to worry, just make sure you brush at least twice a day and floss daily, the bleeding should stop. If its just that one area, floss and brush that area alil longer and more thoroughly.. I would recommend sonicare because my gums were still bleeding after my perio root planing but once I switched to sonicare, the bleeding completely stopped after 2-3wks + flossing every night.     When I usually brush my teeth, I find it hard to brush the front teeth mainly because I have a sore gum. It always tends to bleed if I brush over it quite a few times (I use an electronic toothbrush). What are the possible methods I can use to treat my weak gum?

    • ANSWER:
      I have heard such questions being asked before, often the dentist’s answer is just this: Brush the area more often.
      If it is bleeding it is because of all the dirt trapped underneath. Brush it more often and just let it bleed, don’t worry. Bleeding with “flush out” the dirt.
      Additionally, it doesn’t mean you should brush harder. Make sure you don’t exert too much pressure and also use a soft bristle toothbrush. Brushing too hard will be counterproductive and cause gum recession.

      Decide whether he is
      (a) continuing to chew, and thus preventing a clot from hardening, or
      (b) is a haemophiliac.
      There is a third possibility:
      (c) a splinter of that bone is stuck in his gum.

      If “a”, then don’t let him chew.
      If “b” or “c “, get to the vet. You are unlikely to have the skill to remove the splinter, and haemophiliacs die unless enough factor VIII is injected into them to get clotting going.

    • ANSWER:
      This is a sign that something is wrong and that you NEED to go to the dentist to get it checked. You are either dealing with Gingivitis (aka swollen gums – it’s not a disease, the word means the gums are swollen, which is caused by food getting in between teeth and lack of flossing regularly).

      Or, you are in some stage of Periodontitis (gum disease – which is why eventually comes about if you have Gingivitis for too long and don’t get it treated – it turns into gum disease).

      In either case, to get the best treatment, you need a dentist. It’s not an option. You won’t get legit antibiotics anywhere but from a doctor, the legal way (via prescription). Plus, not just ANY antibiotics is a fix-all…certain ones fix certain things.

      The alcohol in mouthwash is actually quite bad for the enamel of your teeth, which, if it gets worn away enough…can cause cavities in the teeth a lot more easily.

    Toothpicks causing gum bleeding, what does this mean?
    I was using a toothpick between two teeth. I barely touched my gums in this area. I mean barely. It did not hurt at all. And all of a sudden I noticed the taste of blood in my mouth. My gums started bleeding a lot. It just stopped. But it scared me because I’ve never had sensitive gums before. What does this mean? Anything?

    • ANSWER:
      Ot could be that your gums are super sensitive. You shouldn’t pick them or agitate them too much or else they will get infected which will cause you greater pain. It shouldn’t be anything serious, but if you think it is have your dentist check it out.

    Bleeding gums- any alternate ideas other than gum disease? Tramadol use? Ibuprofen use?
    I was taking the medication Tramadol for hip pain, and before that I was taking ibuprofen regularly. My gums are bleeding, but I don’t think that it is gum disease or gingivitis since I brush regularly. Anyone have any ideas? Thank you.

      Bleeding is the single most indicating sign of gum inflammation. and could be a result of periodontal disease. Brushing regularly would not help reducing bleeding or relieving inflammation if periodontal disease is already present. the contributing factors like (subginigival calculus) or under the gum tartal build up cannot be removed by brushing alone, and needs professional help, what’s called deep cleaning.
      Tramadol can cause dry mouth if used for prolonged periods, and dry mouth can certainly cause gingival (gum) inflammation,
      you need to know that a very high number of population have periodontal disease, and not even aware of it. the best is to visit your dentist to make sure of the diagnosis, and get the proper treatment if needed.

      You will need to have a exam and a professional cleaning. Then you will be placed on a good home care program and your problem will be cured. See your dentist asap as this is progressive and will go into the bone supporting the teeth causing them to become loose and possibly need extracting.

      You might not be brushing and flossing enough. I used to have the same problem and my dentist told me to brush and floss more often. You might just have sensitive gums.

      Crate training! When he is inside, he is either in your arms or in the crate. He only leaves the crate to go outside; you give him food and water by opening the crate door and placing the food and water in front of it. Crate training is the ideal way to housebreak any healthy dog–puppies and adults, all breeds. It only fails if the dog is unhealthy or otherwise unable to control bowel movements, such as newborn puppies or very, very old dogs. Put him on a schedule and anticipate when we will need to relieve himself (probably 30 mins after giving him food or water). Poodles are generally very easy to housebreak.
      There’s another thing that works really well that you can do along with crate training. If he poos/pees inside, tell him NO! (just once sharp and loud to let him know you are displeased, do not hit him or rub his nose in it as these methods aren’t going to help teach him) and then bring the stuff outside in your yard and leave it there. Soak up the pee with a paper towel and drop it outside (weighted down by a rock or something). When you take him out of his crate and outside, let him sniff (but not eat!) his pee and poop. I’ve heard of this working really well on some dogs, but don’t trust it to work without crate training too.
      His gums are bleeding? Do you know why they are? If he just had a mild injury–puppies are clumsy–don’t worry, it will heal. It’s not a big deal if he bumped it on like a corner of a table and has a tiny spot that’s bleeding. A small cut on a dog heals very quickly. Take a good look at it and see if there are other reasons for concern. Is it really swollen, strange colored, or otherwise weird? If so, you should take him to a vet. As his owner, you’re going to have to take responsibility and use your judgment of when to bring him to the vet and when not to.

      Wash your mouth out with some water, and just take a look in the mirror to see if there is any food still there, with is unlikely.
      Brush your gum gently to disinfect or remove any food.
