  17. QUESTION:
What are the first signs of mouth cancer, or other gum and mouth related diseases because of smokeless tobacco?
I’m quite the dipper. My mouth seems to take it ok but, I don’t want to wake up one morning with half my gum line missing or find a “lump”. What are some things I can look for?

    • ANSWER:
You may see a white or keratinized area, sometimes it can be silvery. This is not always an indication of cancer, but irritation to the tissue that can later lead to abnormal cell formation. I used to work in an office that offered oral cancer screenings by a machine called a “Velscope”. It is basically a non-invasive oral cancer screening that uses a high intensity light and a filtered scope allowing the clinician to see abnormal cells way before they can be detected by the naked eye. Usually by the time the naked eye can detect something abmormal, the prognosis is poor. I recommend getting a Velscope screening, and doing that once a year just to stay in check. A lot of offices don’t have them though because they are fairly new and very expensive.

Basically, for the best results, I’d just call the dentists in your area and ask if they offer an “enhanced” oral cancer screening, and specify that you want more than just a visual exam.

Also, if you are worried about cancer and don’t want to stop chewing, try switching sides to give your tissue a break every now and then.

  31. QUESTION:
is it true that substances in gum can give you cancer?
I have heard about this statement, but not entirely sure whether it is 100 per cent truthful.

    • ANSWER:
It can, due to the additives and chemicals it contains. They are a small % in the gums mass, but if you sum up the amount of gum you will have chewed by the age of 40, you somewhat come to the conclusion that it’s appropriate to be afraid.

And 40ish is the age when most people start having such terminal health problems..Coincidence?

It’s all a bit frustrating, since additives and chemicals in consumables are somewhat generic. Everything contains a certain % of’em universally. You can worry yourself sick thinkin of all that shiz, best thing is to just make moderate use of everything devious and hope it doesn’t come around to bite you in the a$$ later.

I know smoking causes cancer thats a fact…Im basically saying together will it speed up the process…

    • ANSWER:
This is an interesting question, and on the face of it, I would have to guess that it would indeed increase the chance of getting both mouth cancer (because of the increased residence time of various carcinogens in the mouth) and, I would imagine, stomach and eosophogial cancers, since you would be swallowing more carcinogens in your saliva than a smoker who is not chewing gum.

      Good luck with that!

Do cube-shaped pieces of gum really give cancer?
Everyone say so, I love that gum!

  40. QUESTION:
Can you get cancer from gum?
can you get cancer from chewing too much gum all the time?

    • ANSWER:
If you chew gum on a regular basis, please consider the following:

      1. Chewing gum causes unnecessary wear and tear of the cartilage that acts as a shock absorber in your jaw joints. Once damaged, this area can create pain and discomfort for a lifetime.

      2. You use eight different facial muscles to chew. Unnecessary chewing can create chronic tightness in two of these muscles, located close to your temples. This can put pressure on the nerves that supply this area of your head, contributing to chronic, intermittent headaches.

      3. You have six salivary glands located throughout your mouth that are stimulated to produce and release saliva whenever you chew. Producing a steady stream of saliva for chewing gum is a waste of energy and resources that could otherwise be used for essential metabolic activities.

      4. Most chewing gum is sweetened with aspartame. Long term use of aspartame has been closely linked with cancer, diabetes, neurological disorders, and birth defects.

      5. If your gum isn’t sweetened by aspartame, it is probably sweetened by sugar. Sugar is most likely the single greatest dietary cause of chronic health problems like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and emotional disorders.

The next time you think about chewing gum, please remember the price that your body pays for it.

  41. QUESTION:
How do u know if u have gum cancer?!?
how long does it take to show its symptoms( one year, few months) and what are exactly the symptoms?!

    • ANSWER:
When it comes to the symptoms of gum cancer, there are two types that you need to be aware of. The first type of symptoms are the ones that you might notice yourself. You will be able to feel them or see them. The second type are the symptoms that only your doctor or dentist might be able to detect.

Included in the first set of symptoms are pain in your gum area, swelling of your gums (which is also a symptom of gingivitis), a mass on your gum that you can either feel or see, a gum ulceration and gum bleeding (which is also a sign of gingivitis).

The symptoms that your doctor would have to notice include an ulcer that hasn’t healed properly, a lump in the oral cavity that has gotten larger rather than smaller, Red, white or dark areas on the gum, and a abnormal texture to the gums that may cause loose teeth or a movement of teeth

    Do I have gum cancer?
I’ve been smoking cigarettes for maybe 3 years… not a very long time. I just recently noticed that I have this really really small white spot at the top of my gums on this little reddish area. It’s not really that sore or anything but it just bothers me that it’s there. I’m only 17 years old and I didn’t think a person my age only smoking for 3 years could get cancer so soon… honeslty I’m a little scared… does it sound like I may have gum cancer?

I flushed all of my cigarettes down the toilet just now and I’m never picking one up again. Today’s the day I quit, but is it already too late? If I give it time… will I be okay?

at your age oral cavity cancer would be unusual. 46. QUESTION:
Stats on mouth / oral / gum cancer?
Anyone with medical experience your insight would be greatly appreciated. I smoke cigarettes and have been off and on for about 3 years. I know the stats on smoking and feel as if I could quit at any moment I want. I’m pushing my luck I guess because I don’t have a history of lung cancer in my family or genetics (except for my grandmother who smoked for 50 years.)
But this is most likely beside the point, just trying to give detail. I am most worried about when I quit last year and decided to pick up dipping (smokeless tobacco) for 3 months to cure the nicotene crave. Bad idea I know.
I only did it for 3 months and towards the end, maybe for the last month or so, I was probably going though a can of dip every other day. WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING ORAL GUM CANCER OR MOUTH CANCER? If it is anything like smoking (which I know it’s not and it’s worse) then 3 months would be nothing to worry about. But I am extremely paranoid and really don’t want my face to get cut off.
Has anyone heard horror stories of people dipping for short periods of time like this and getting cancer. Maybe you know someone. Or maybe you can just provide me with stats. I need some peace of mind. But don’t hesitate to tell me some horror stories if you know them, I need to know this! Thanks all
Ok thanks doctor for you insight… I quit about 7 months ago and will never dip again. Does this mean that if nothing visual has arose in my mouth then most likely nothing ever will? That would be cool

    • ANSWER:
i’ve seen white lesions inside the vestibule of the mouth in teenagers.
i’ve recommended cessation of chewing tobacco and reevaluation in 2 weeks. all cases resolved and the teens stopped chewing and smoking. so there’s hope.

if the white lesion did not resolve, i would have referred to oral surgeon for biopsy for definitive diagnosis.

keep in mind that i already diagnosed one case of squamos cell cancer on the tongue in a 40 year old this year. not pretty. he’s getting his tongue and jaw resected and piece of his heel (from his foot) placed in his mouth to restore what will be loss not including radiotherapy.

so quit now and get regular dental checkups.

I went today to get a fill in and she push my tooth SO HARD it killed! i told her no way i want to wait till im 18, my family keep braging on sayin it can lead to gum cancer, or infections wich will spread around my mouth and body leading to gum cncer if i dont keep getting it filled in, theira now a gap their and they need to remove my nerve. Im so scared.

If i leave it like this until im 18 to get a cramp, will i be ok?
If not what are the consequenses ? :(
    Thankyou x

    • ANSWER:
removing the nerve barely hurts at all. You can wait til your 18. Just get it filled. If they remove the nerve though you will have to get a crown over the tooth. You don’t have to worry about cancer…

But in the net saccharin is said as safe to consume…..I am confused. Is this an old wife tale to stop me from eating gum or is it a bad case of misinformation?

    Thank you guys ;)

  49. QUESTION:
can you get gum cancer from eating too many sunflower seeds?

    • ANSWER:
Sunflower seeds are actually quite rich in nutrients. I can’t imagine where you got the idea that eating them could lead to gum cancer.

One question I have is whether you’re talking about eating them hulled or not………do you chew the tough outer shell?
I know some people do, and I suppose that if you do this excessively, without flossing carefully and maintaining good dental hygiene, you could experience some gum irritation. But cancer? I wouldn’t think so.

I’m really curious to know where you got this idea. Could you post a little more about your question?
