Gum disease can usually be prevented by good and careful teeth cleaning and regular cleanings or scale and polishes with your dentist or hygienist. Decayed teeth, which hold bacteria that can spread throughout the body, also can make a child more susceptible to other problems, such as ear and sinus infections. Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Gum disease begins with plaque, which is always forming on your teeth, without you even knowing it. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two main stages of gum disease. People usually don’t show signs of gum disease until they are in their 30s or 40s.
Treatment Tips:
Curettage–a scraping away of the diseased gum tissue in the infected pocket.
Flap surgery–involves lifting back the gums and removing the tartar.
Bone grafts–used to replace bone destroyed by periodontitis.
Soft tissue grafts–reinforce thin gums or fill in places where gums have receded.
Guided tissue regeneration–stimulates bone and gum tissue growth.
Bone (osseous) surgery–smooths shallow craters in the bone due to moderate and advanced bone loss.
Acute ulcerative gingivitis is very easily treated with a three day course of the antibiotic metronidazole, and rarely returns.
Tartar will be scaled off both above and under the gums and under the gums by a dental professional
Signs of gum disease:
Gums that bleed easily when you brush your teeth
Gums that are red inflamed or tender
Persistent case of bad breath
Constant bad taste in your mouth
Pus appears between gums and teeth
Receding gums that make your teeth look longer
Deep pockets surrounding gums and teeth
Tooth becomes loose
A change in your bite or teeth does not fit together well
The good news is that, if the gum disease is detected on its early stage, it can be treated and reversed. There are lots and lots of natural gum disease remedies readily available. Using natural gum disease remedies will not only give fast healing process, it will also provide better oral health care. Vitamin C is one of the good natural gum disease remedies found today. Vitamin C is popularly known as an antioxidant. Antioxidants help repair the connective fibers and hasten the regeneration of the bone or bones that were damaged by the gum disease. Individuals who are vitamin C deficient are known to have high probability to experience gum disease.
Vitamin D is also one of the best natural gum disease remedies easily available. Vitamin D is known to have anti-inflammatory effects hereby reducing or minimizing the susceptibility to gum disease. Researchers found out that individuals who have high vitamin D levels in their blood are less apt to experience bleeding in their gums during gum probing. Vitamin D is the most readily available natural gum disease remedies because sunlight is the most abundant source of vitamin D. Experts recommend 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure must be done two times a week to have sufficient amount of vitamin D in the blood level.

QUESTION:
What are the symptoms of a serious gum infection?
I recently got my wisdom teeth pulled and on the bottom right corner of my mouth the gum kind of has a hole in it still and a lot of food is gathering in it. I’ve been brushing my teeth after every meal and washing my mouth out with salt + water but im still getting brown puss stuff coming out of just that one hole. I feel a bit nauseous and am quite hot all over my body. My right side of my cheek is kind of sore but not too bad. This morning it was kind of swollen but not anymore. Should I be going to the doctor to get antibio-tics?-
ANSWER:
I doubt that you have an infection and the brownish material is just some old clotted blood. However to be sure, your dentist would be glad to look at the socket. If there would be infection, he will place you on antibiotics. In the meantime keep up with the warm salt water rinses. Good luck.

QUESTION:
symptoms of gum disease or infection?-
ANSWER:
The first signs of gingivitis is if you bleed when you floss and your gums become irritated and inflamed.Keep brushing gently, even if it hurts. Keep flossing everyday too. The sore gums will heal in probably a few days (up to a week) if you are taking care of them everyday. A waterpik is a bonus.
Gingivitis is easily reversible in the early stages.

QUESTION:
Are there any pain relief remedies for a small gum infection while I wait for my dentist appointment?
I suspect I’m suffering from pericoronitis (small, painful gum infection caused by being stubborn and not having my wisdom teeth pulled sooner). I have a dentist appointment but its a ways off and the pain is moderate.
Symptoms include: Sharp pain behind and around my bottom left wisdom tooth, pain opening jaw, pain swallowing, aching lower left jaw, and bad breath. I’m getting some relief with 800mg of Motrin 3 times a day with meals but its starting to wear off quicker and I’m afraid to take any more. I’ve pushed on the tooth and it doesn’t hurt, so I’m pretty sure its my gums. I think.-
ANSWER:
It sounds like you are doing the right thing for the problem so far. As long as you are otherwise healthy, you can take 800mg ibuprofen every 6 hours for a week or so. If this stops working, don’t take more. Take 400mg ibuprofen and 1000mg Tylenol (2 extra strength tabs). Rinse the area with warm water and salt (1 teaspoon salt in 8-12 ounces warm water) once every hour to get some relief and to kill some bacteria in the area. Unfortunately, even when you see your dentist, he may not be able to take it out for you that day. Very often, you may need to wait to have the actual extractions done or be sent to an oral surgeon to have the tooth extracted. Also, if you have other wisdom teeth, you may want to go to sleep to have all of them removed at once so that this doesn’t happen again. I hope this helps.
Lastly, do NOT dissolve anything taken by mouth against your soft tissues of your mouth. Aspirin as acetylsalicylic ACID and will BURN YOU if you let it dissolve in your mouth, creating a whole host of other problems. I hope you feel better soon.

QUESTION:
Do I have the flu without the respiratory symptoms or some kind of gum/dental infection?
A couple weeks ago one of my gums around my right rear molar became very inflamed and thought it was just irritated so I just fought through the pain it until it resolved itself, which it did. Couple days after that I develop a really bad case of fatigue, aches, chills, and fever as if I had a flu. Now, a week later I’m still suffering from the same symptoms but it is not consistent, but just as severe as the week before. A couple hours I will feel fine and then all of a sudden I’ll get hit with really bad chills. It’s very uncomfortable and I’m afraid if I go to the doctor, they will just say it’s the flu. I have no medical insurance. Bad excuse not to go I know. Anyone have answers?-

What are some symptoms of a wisdom tooth infection before having them extracted?
My wisdom teeth started coming in about a week and a half ago and i have the common soreness of the gum. Today I woke up feeling sick, I have a fever along with the worst headache I have ever had and both of my ears hurt. Also I’m having a very hard time swallowing. Are these symptoms of my teeth being infected?I have looked at symptoms on medical sites but everyone is saying something diferent. I have an appointment with a surgeon but he cant see me until later this month.
Thanks in advance for your help.
-
ANSWER:
What you have is called “pericoronitis”. A condition very common for wisdom teeth that are partially impacted (only partly way out). What is happening is that food and debris is getting between the flap of gum and the tooth. There is a gum infection and it can be extremely painful. Common symptoms are sorness of the overlying gum. Redness and swelling of the gum around the wisdom tooth. Pain traveling up to the ear. Sometimes it can hinder mouth opening and cause swelling on the side of the face. Immediate treatment would involve rinsing with warm salt water several times a day to clean the area. Also an antibiotic. Eventually, the wisdom tooth should be extracted. Otherwise, the infection will come again.http://www.bcdentalcare.ca/CosmeticDentistry/tabid/471/Default.aspx

ANSWER:
That is good advice from the student except that many of those products require a prescription (at least in the us).Listerine works just as well as chlorhexidine. rinse with original listerine…not less intense, for 30 seconds twice a day.
massage your gums with your toothbrush. Your gums will bleed at first but should bleed less and less each time.
Gently floss if it’s not too swollen. Be careful to wrap the floss around your tooth so it slides under your gums and doesn’t cut your gums.

QUESTION:
What are some ear infection symptoms? Mine are listed?
So for a few days I’ve had a cough and cold symptoms. Yesterday around lunch time I noticed my ear felt slightly plugged up. Yawning or chewing gum didn’t help. When I ignored it I didn’t notice it, but when I woke up this morning it was worse, when it was quiet I could hear the ocean, like when you hear your blood flowing inside a seashell. I don’t know if that means anything, but I thought it was peculiar. I looked up ear infection symptoms, and mine sounded similar. I thought it was worth 5 points to ask just incase. It being New Year’s Eve Day, the doctors is closed. So if someone would help, that would be wonderfully awesome! Thanks!!!!!-
ANSWER:
Its not an infection, if you had an infection you’d be climbing the walls with earache and since you mention no pain i’m pretty sure its not an infection.
It sounds like you just have mucus from your cold or whatever rolling around in your head and inner ears. It should clear on its own or you may find it’ll start to affect your balance in which case you’ll have to visit a doctor. But it’ll probably clear on its own, its a weird noise to have though I know, I get it everytime I get a cold it drives me mad

QUESTION:
Mouth Infection? Gum Disease? STD?
I’ll start with a brief overview of me; I’m 19 years old, am sexually active, am prescribed to 20mg of Adderall XR, and have used chewing tobacco for a little over a year however I have recently quit and haven’t dipped in 3 weeks, and I also previously had a lip piercing but I took it out about 3 or 4 months ago . A little over a month ago I discovered a tiny pimple sized white thing on my lingual frenum (2 or 3 days after engaging in unprotected sex) and it disappeared in about 2 or 3 days. I was tested for strep throat and mono about 2 weeks later due to persistence and progression of symptoms. They both came back negative. My symptoms were; stuffy nose, drainage of mucus onto tongue, swollen tongue and papillae on back of tongue, puffy cheeks, swollen glands in neck, mildly swollen and red tonsils, sore throat, mild fatigue, and mild baggage under eyes. Now it’s been about a month and 2 weeks and I’m still sick even though I feel better. I know still have drainage onto tongue, greenish hairy tongue, mild sore throat, and the facial swelling has gone down. However I know experience a new symptom which is a dry mouth. I wake up every morning with a pretty dry mouth, red gums, and have to drink a glass of water. I also now have increased thirst.
I was wondering if this could be an oral STD, an infection, gum disease from previously dipping or from my wisdom teeth coming in, or maybe a result of Hypothryoidism? I read Adderall and other ADHD stimulants can cause this, and I do have numerous symptoms however they go hand-in-hand with ADHD and ADD..
I am going to the doctor again next week but I’m kinda scared and would like some information sooner if possible! Thanks in advance!

ANSWER:
all i know is that the greenish hairy toungue is from chewing tobacco

QUESTION:
I was dx with POTS/NCS back in May. I’m experiencing new symptoms my body is swelling,jaw/gum pain. ?
I’ve dealt with blood pooling in my legs but most of my body is turning a purplish color, numbness in both feet and lower legs and not I’m NOt sure if I’m retaing water or if I have a infection. I know you can experience a lot of symptoms I’m just a little worried. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.-
ANSWER:
Kallie – Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia (POTS) is a syndrome. As such, there is a collection of symptoms that distinguish it. The symptoms are widespread because the autonomic nervous system plays an extensive role in regulating functions throughout the body. Many of these symptoms, such as low blood pressure,* may present only after prolonged standing. Symptoms will vary from person to person.Neurocardiogenic syncope is a temporary loss of consciousness associated with a drop in arterial blood pressure, quickly followed by a slowed heart rate.
Neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS) is also referred to as vasovagal syncope or neurally mediated syncope. The terms are used interchangeably throughout this web page.
What are the symptoms of NCS?
Neurocardiogenic fainting usually occurs while standing. Emotional stress, stressful condition and pain may trigger an episode, especially among the young. The onset may be abrupt or associated with warning symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, nausea, sweating, pallor, visual disturbances, abdominal discomfort, headache, pins-and-needles, lightheadedness or vertigo (Deering, 2003). Presyncopal patients may also complain of palpitations, vomiting, disorientation, and difficulty speaking clearly or coherently. Other symptoms that may present before a faint include feeling either warm or cold, tremors, yawning and having a bluish/purple or red coloring to the skin.
During the faint “seizure-like” activity may occur. This convulsive activity is thought to be distinct from a seizure disorder.
Patients are sometimes symptomatic after a faint as well. Patients may complain of symptoms including nausea, clamminess, lightheadedness, headache and malaise. Patients may also experience vomiting, abdominal discomfort, weakness, tremors, cold or warm feelings and confusion. Patients who experience frequent neurocardiogenic syncope may report symptoms between faints as well, such as chronic fatigue, headache, chest pain, exercise intolerance, heart “flip flops” and an inability to tolerate prolonged standing.

QUESTION:
mouth or gum infection?
2 weeks ago there was a a white-vein like thing stretching 1 cm from the opening of my mouth to the lining near my wisdom tooth.
Days later there was a white “gum-like” near my wisdom tooth which happens to grew at the end of that vein-like structure.
It was really painful whenever I chew something on my left so I now chew on the right and my cheek was swollen.
I happen to have a fever and chills and flu same symptoms that I had experienced when my wisdom tooth popped ..and my flu became a sinusitis and as of now that thing that grew from my mouth is still painful..CAn somebody tell me what is this thing?what are the treatments for this..’coz the dental check up here is very expensive somehow my allowance won’t do..please help me.
-
ANSWER:
I hope that by now you have gone to a dentist and been treated. The only thing I can think of is an abscess. The only treatment is prescription antibiotics and removal of the offending tooth. You probably already have inflammation circulating throughout your body and that can ultimately adversely affect all your organs, even your heart. It’s nothing to mess with. This, unfortunately, is a best case scenario. Otherwise I have no idea what it could be. Good luck. I hope you get better.

QUESTION:
Any Diseases Have The Same Symptoms As Primary HSV 1 Infection?
Step throat? Foot and Mouth? Mono? Mouth full of blisters (cheeks, gums, tongue) fever, chills but no coughing or sore throat. I’ve been getting very minor cold sores for many years and then I get hit with these symptoms from out of the blue!!! What the hell colud cause this????-
ANSWER:
So, you might have had cold sores all your life, but maybe this is the primary manifestation of actual oral herpes. I had this– the only thing I can think of, and my dentist first told me it was this, is Acute Necrotizing Ulcerative Gingivitis. But, when the doctors told me I was HSV-1 positive, I blamed the whole infection as the primary stage of herpes. I never had a sore throat, though. Just huge, extremely swollen glands, very high fever, and ulcers and mouth sores all over. My gums were so puffy and swollen. I looked and felt terrible. All I did was sleep because I couldn’t eat due to the horrible pain in my mouth. I took Ibuprofen constantly and the infection went away because the doc gave me Penicillin.

QUESTION:
Bleedding gums, early symptom of HIV infection?
I had a low risk exposure and after 2 months have bleeding gums, ie in the morning when i spit i see blood mixed with saliva and after 4 to 5 spits the blood stops.
Is this just a bleeding gum problem or a early symptom of HIV infection ( after the low risk exposure I had light fever, headache and yeast like infection on my genitals which is gone now).
I got tested for HIV after 3 weeks of exposure with negative results-
ANSWER:
To be sure, you should be tested for HIV again. It may take six to twelve weeks for antibodies to show up in your system.
If the bleeding gums are caused by HIV, then the antibodies would probably be in your system, so retesting again now might not be too soon. This is something to discuss and have evaluated by your doctor. Your doctor may want you to wait longer, or to have two more tests. There are many diseases that can cause bleeding gums, but of course gum disease is the most common. Have you kept up with your dental hygiene?

QUESTION:
5 month old sinus infection symptoms?
My five month old son has a sinus infection, and has been on antibiotics for about 5 days. However, he has been screaming constantly for about two weeks. I figured he was just teething (causing a runny nose and drainage) and put off going to the doctor longer than I should have. Now that we are on the meds, and have two new bottom teeth, he is just as cranky as two weeks ago. The infection is getting better, but he is constantly snotting around… obviously signs that he is on the way to a full recovery. But he seems constantly tired (yet fights sleep any chance he gets) and uncomfortable. What could possibly be the problem? Could it just be the infection making him miserable? His gums are not swollen, so I don’t expect any new teeth soon. He is typically an ANGEL– really, I am constantly being told what a “happy baby” he is.-
ANSWER:
My 20 week old son is going through the exact same thing…minus the teething. I too get told how spoiled I am because of how great my baby is, but about a week and a half ago he got horribly sick and he just hasn’t been the same since. He’s constantly fighting sleep, and sounds congested, and has a yucky cough. The best thing you can do is the usual, humidifier, vicks baby rub, tylenol as needed, and lots of fluids. Do you rock him to sleep? I pat my son’s tush while I hold him and quietly “shush” him, and he usually falls asleep with that. He’s starting to get back to normal, but it really has taken awhile. I was told by his pediatrician that it’s viral so no antibiotics would be beneficial. I would say keep doing what you’re doing, and continue to give him lots of loves. Best wishes.

QUESTION:
I think I have a gum infection?
In the last few days, I’ve noticed a small red spot under one of my teeth. It doesn’t hurt for the most part, but if I drink anything of any temperature I’ll feel this sharp pain shoot down my jaw for a split second, then go away completely. Sometimes I can touch that tooth with my tongue and it will “snap” as if it was loose and I put it back in place, but that’s only once every few days. I’m not having other symptoms. The earliest I can get in for a dental appointment is in about 10 days, but I just want someone else’s opinion and what I should do until then.
Well, the loose tooth hasn’t happened for about 2 days, but I don’t know… I’ll try to see if I can get in sooner.-

QUESTION:
Treatment and symptoms of sinus infection during pregnancy?
I went to the dentist as I am having an excruitating amount of pain on my left back teeth. He suspected a baterial infection, cotterized some gum tissue that was damaged (possibly from me flossing/brushing too often he said) and put me on an oral rinse that fights bacterial infections. No progress thus far in terms of any of those working, but my sinuses hurt and feel bruised badly. I will go into my OB doctor Monday regarding a sinus infection, and was curious what treatments were acceptable for sinus infections that have moved into the gum tissue (causing tooth ache) during pregnancy. Help?
If it matters, I am in my third trimester.-

I am also in my third trimester and just got over a sinus infection. My doctor prescribed Cefdinir, it’s an antibiotic, and safe to take during pregnancy. Good luck, I hope you get some relief!!

QUESTION:
Can tooth or gum infections impact the health of your entire body?
Hi there. I have had a dramatic plunge in my health recently and my doctor has diagnosed me on separate occasions with a sinus infection, a throat infection, and a chest infection. When he finally put me on antibiotics I noticed a few of my teeth went numb and I realised that it wasn’t that they were numb is was that they just weren’t hurting any more. While I got better very quickly, before the course of antibiotics ran out the symptoms all returned again. This time I was aware of my teeth hurting. Is it possible that this infection in my teeth could have caused all the other symptoms in my body?
Rather then going back to my doctor again and almost single handedly put his kids through private school with the charges, I’ve made an appointment with my dentist for next week. More money I know, but do you think it could really be whats wrong with me?-
ANSWER:
Absolutely!! Studies have shown a link between heart disease, high blood pressure and cholestorol and gum disease and infection in the mouth. There have actually been reported cases of people who had periodontal disease getting gum treatment and they found that they didn’t have to be on blood pressure medication any longer. Look at it this way. If a person went to their doctor with scurvy, most doctors would treat the person for the symptoms that they were having, instead of treating the disease: giving them an orange. It is so simple.

QUESTION:
What is the surgical management on abscess like symptoms on six month old root canal?
This tooth was previously root canaled. I thought it was not done before so the dentist drilled this tooth and found that a root canal had already been done before so he resealed it and put a new crown (old one was chipped) on.
Now, I am positive I have an infection. The superior gum margin is sore and X-ray is non-contributative because the
infection is small. Three grams/day Amoxycillin for 10 days did not work. Nor did Augmentin work. Now I’m trying Ciprofloxacine. If this antibiotic doesn’t work? What other antibiotic would be next in line to use. What surgical intervention can be done in this delicate case, as a last resort; aside of extracting the tooth. I truly need your advise. The dentist thinks I’m joking because he can’t see anything on the x-ray. Help!-
ANSWER:
I find that extremely hard to believe. A dentist is not going to “drill into” a tooth without first having an x-ray of the tooth. An x-ray will show whether or not a root canal has been performed. Thus, the dentist would have known before he “drilled into” the tooth if it had previous root canal therapy.

Is swollen gums a symptom of an infection of pierced lip?
I got my lip pierced a week ago today. I’ve had no problems with it since the first day when it became embedded in my lip. I got a new ring put in, and have had no other problems until this morning. I woke up to realize that my gum directly behind my lip ring was swollen and abnormally so. I’ve read nothing online saying that it could be an infection of my ring, but I want to make sure, and if it is what can I do to help it? I clean my piercing and do the soaks that I was told to do. Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?-

QUESTION:
A Toothache With No Other Symptoms of an infection HELP!?
i have a toothache there is no pus or a blister it feels normal except the gum hurts whe i press it and its just got a BIT swollen but it makes my other teeth hurt is this and infection or an abscess?
Ive had this pain for two weeks and sometimes it doesnt hurt it only started swelling a few days ago-
ANSWER:
Infection and abscess are basically the same thing. It sounds like you have an infected tooth. The abscess occurs when the pus finds an outlet where it makes a fistula/hole in the gums where it can drain. This is why the gums are beginning to swell and are sore b/c it is trying to find a place to come out.

QUESTION:
What can cause symtoms of lock jaw but progress into an infection along the gum lines?
I 1st saw my family physician about a month ago when I was experiencing pain along my ear and jaw on my left side and could barely open my mouth. He diagnosed me with TMJ. A week later it got worse. I had facial swelling and the same symptoms already mentioned. Then my physician said maybe my saliva glands were infected. After a week of antibiotics my gum line began to swell. The physician said maybe a tooth, but I see a dentist regularly and had already talked with him and he said there was nothing wrong with my left said, not even a cavity. I told the doctor this so he called an ENT to see me. The ENT said not glandular maybe in my jaw. I’m still on antibiotics and now have pus coming from along the bottom and in the back of my gums, not near my teeth. I’ve had no teeth pain and the gums nearest my teeth are fine. What can this be?-

QUESTION:
What are other alternatives to similar symptoms of a gum abscess?
They are usually always above the back teeth on my gums, the one on the right is about the size of a jellybean, and is newer than the one on the left. The one on the left is smaller, and usually less inflamed than the right one usually. They feel as though they’re filled with something, though I’ve read and heard that when an abcess bursts there is a VERY bitter and unpleasant taste in your mouth from the pus. When my… well, whatever they are, go down, I don’t taste anything different really, and they don’t hurt when they go away or when they re-appear. They slightly vary in size, but are always smaller than the jellybean size, which is the biggest they ever get. As for color… the last I checked they are the same pinkish color of my gums, not white or yellow or anything. I don’t have any underlying conditions, I am medically healthy. For the last several months, I have had reoccurring lumps of sorts on my gums. They started about a day after my last dental visit, where I had x-rays and all of the other usual dentist checkup-y things done and they didn’t find any abscesses or anything like that. I do have 2 teeth with cavities in the back of my mouth (one on each side) but the dentist didn’t think either of them were THAT bad, but should be filled as soon as possible, though due to me not having any insurance he didn’t see any reason that with proper personal dental care it couldn’t be taken care of later.
Anyway, I have these lumps on my gums, and everything I have ever read about abscesses (whatever) says that they cause pain, usually immense pain, but mine don’t cause any pain at all. They’re not even a tiny bit sore, and they go away intermittently but then raise back up, usually in the morning when I wake up. They are usually always above the back teeth on my gums, the one on the right is about the size of a jellybean, and is newer than the one on the left. The one on the right feels like I can almost move it with my tongue, which is weird to me, but it does feel like it moves when I push it with my tongue. The one on the left is smaller, and usually less inflamed than the right one usually. They feel as though they’re filled with something, though I’ve read and heard that when an abcess bursts there is a VERY bitter and unpleasant taste in your mouth from the pus. When my… well, whatever they are, go down, I don’t taste anything in my mouth, much less anything bitter or gross, and they don’t hurt when they go away or when they re-appear. They slightly vary in size, but are always smaller than the jellybean size, which is the biggest they ever get, and they don’t get that big very often. As for color… the last I checked they are the same pinkish color of my gums, not white or yellow or anything. I don’t have any underlying conditions, I am medically healthy.
Any ideas as to what this is or how to go about treating it? I went on a cycle of antibiotics back in September when I first was terrified I had dental abcesses, but they didn’t go away. My GP thought that maybe they weren’t dental abcesses or a dental infection… but wasn’t sure what they were since there was no pain and they didn’t go away with antibiotics.
-
ANSWER:
Ok, well your description was long to get through, but I think I might be able to make some recommendations. The first thing is that you’ve seen the dentist and ruled out an infection of dental origin. You’ve seen your physician and tried antibiotics to rule out some other infection. The next thing is to ask your physician to refer you to an ENT. There is clearly something going on. If I were evaluating you, I would send you to an oral surgeon or ENT. Since you don’t have dental insurance, then ENT. You probably need a small biopsy to look at where the separation in the skin of the mouth occurs. It sounds like you have one of the vesiculo-bullous disorders like pemphigus or pemphigoid. Since what you describe sounds like an autoimmune issue, it really needs to be checked.
I hope I’ve given you enough buzz words to give your physician. Unfortunately, people practically need to diagnose themselves before they can get the appropriate treatment.
good luck

QUESTION:
Can a tooth/gum abscess get re-infected?
So basically I got a swollen lump behind one of my front bottom teeth last December which was infected and spread to the rest of my mouth/jaw causing me the most pain I’ve ever felt before.
I went and got it looked at and the Dentist gave me some antibiotics and some Perio Rx mouthwash to gargle with alternating with warm salt water. I went back for a check up a few days later still with pain and the Dentist took this pointy utensil and drained the “puss” in the gum infection and I haven’t had any problems since then. I didn’t go back ::pops hand:: after the pain/symptoms went away but more so recently I was curious to know if the infection could come back or do more damage since I didn’t get it fully treated? I still have a small lump that feels a lil swollen but isn’t puss filled or painful at all so I was just curious if any of you could shead some light on this dilemma. Thanks-
ANSWER:
Hi BadKitty,You really need to go back to the dentist and get this taken care of.It sounds like you have a fistula and that will never heal on it’s own.The fistula is the result of an abscessed tooth. The abscess is a infection that first forms around the apex or tip of the root. If left untreated the infection will begin to erode the bone around the tooth. You are most likely going to need a root canal on that tooth.

QUESTION:
Signs of infection after periodontal disease surgery?
I had the surgery for periodontal disease over 10 days ago, still haven’t had my stitches taken out.My gums on the side where they did it are darker red where the other side of my mouth looks a light pink. I am very sensitive on the one side, I cant even drink room temperature water!! Other symptoms as well, I cant find a list of symptoms for infection or anything??
Anyone know of the symptoms??
-
ANSWER:
Differences in color is normal. Sensitivity can be normal. Think about it– it’s brand new gums that have just been put on, they would be a little freaked out and irritated, wouldn’t they
You need to look out for warmth in the area. Warmth can indicate an infection, as well as exudate. However, sometimes some oozing is allowed.
You really should call your perio and tell him about it. We can tell you things all day her on YA, but since we don’t know what was done and how you reacted, we would just be guessing at best. Your perio knows what would be normal for the surgery that you had, and can help you out there.
Good luck!

QUESTION:
does this sound like an infection from wisdom tooth extraction?
On friday, i got all four wisdom teeth out. only the bottom left has stitches and left me with a numb chin/lip because of nerve damage but the lip is now finally back. i was very sore and swollen and the swelling went down alot. i now consider myself only 10% chipmunk looking (haha) instead of looking veryyyy swollen the first day.friends say they wouldnt of noticed if i didnt say anything. i noticed yesterday that my gum is inflamed near the stitches and rising to the same height as my twelve year old molars. it doesn’t really hurt. it’s sore, of course, but mainly if i even attempt to chew on that side (which i dont because of the soreness) alot of people said that if its an infection, it’s usually veryyy painful and i havent even taken my vicodin because of it. granted, i take an advil every now and then but that is because of soreness. also, i am on anti biotics.. penicillin vk, 500 mg. i take one every 6 hours. i also rinse with salt water. so is this swelling just because of surgery or does it sound like an infection?symptoms (to be clearer): barely swollen cheek/jawbone, little hard where the swelling is, yellow bruise, swollen gum (bottom left), soreness but no stabbing pain (all depending on chewing),
going to dr on friday
-
ANSWER:
Been there, done that.I had all mine done too and I did look like a chipmunk, lol. You are still swollen from the surgery, give it a few more days. The antibiotics will prevent infection so do keep taking them.My cousin got all her teeth pulled and died last week from not taking antibiotics. You will feel better in a few days, not to worry..

QUESTION:
What’s causing my cat’s gum lesions? Tooth abscesses or oral cancer?
Hello everyone,In advance, I’d like to thank you for reading this thread. Whether you are a veterinarian, vet tech, or plain old animal lover like me, I graciously appreciate any thoughts, feedback, or advice you can offer regarding my cat’s recent health dilemma.
My cat, Melody, is a six-year-old female orange tabby. Two weeks ago, she presented with unusual gagging and pawing at the mouth, occurring several times throughout the day for a total of two days. She was eating and drinking fine during this time.
An upper respiratory infection soon followed along with refusal to eat or drink for two days. On day three, we took her to see a veterinarian to make sure the situation didn’t get out of hand. The vet said she may have Feline Calicivirus or Rhinotracheitis, which cause recurring respiratiory infections, and we thought that was the culprit (e.g., the onset of the cold may have given her a scratchy/sore throat, causing the pawing and gagging behaviors).
The other culprit suspected was dental disease. During the exam, the vet diagnosed Grade IV-V dental disease, and noted that Melody would need to have a full mouth exam, cleaning, and possible tooth extractions.
For the time being, the vet put her on a liquid antibiotic (Clavamox) taken twice a day, administered an appetite stimulant, and gave an oral gel supplement (L-Lysine). Melody was just beginning to eat as we got home that night. Her voracious appetite returned over the next few days, much to my pleasure, and after a week, the cold was in remission!
And now she’s begun the pawing at the mouth/gagging once again, with occasional drooling. She is having some trouble eating, but does eventually eat wet food nonetheless. Knowing that her symptoms are not cold-related, I now suspect that dental disease is the problem.
I managed to take a few pictures of her mouth when she was eating and playing for a closer look, and found two cyst-like lesions on her bottom two canine teeth, left and right sides. Here are some pictures for your review:
1) http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7372/46368822.jpg
2) http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/8217/16147540.jpg
3) http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9180/52037016.jpg
4) http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5527/30864271.jpgMy questions:
1) Might these lesions be related to the Clavamox antibiotic (e.g., an allergic reaction to penicillin/clavulanate)? I didn’t notice the lesions at all before administering the antibiotic, nor did the vet, but they may have still been there.
2) Does this look like some sort of pyoderma/bacterial gum infection? Possibly tooth abscesses? If so, why didn’t the antibiotic take care of it?
3) One I’m especially worried about – might this be oral squamous cell carcinoma or a form of feline oral cancer? I know that cancer diagnosis can only be determined after performing a biopsy, but based on their shape, size, color, and appearance in general, do you think the lesions are benign or malignant?
These questions are intended only for information gathering. Of course I will bring her in to see the veterinarian as soon as possible, but right now, we are swamped with an awful blizzard (several feet of snow), and local vets aren’t even in the office. I will look into emergency vet hospitals if I can’t get an appointment soon, but I’m once again grateful for your feedback in the interim.
Thank you so much!
The Clavamox antibiotic was administered for 10 days in total.-
ANSWER:
It’s tough to say just what it is, but I’ve never seen Clavamox to produce something like this. I will tell you though that there are several very nasty strains of Calici virus out there, and some of them can produce some wicked mouth lesions. The calici is a virus, and can take 3 weeks to run it’s course. Calici also produces drooling, sometimes heavy drooling. So she may have both that and the dental infection to contend with. An antibiotic won’t do a darn thing for calici, it just needs to run it’s course. I wouldn’t be surprised if she had lesions in her throat as well.Continue to encourage her to eat the canned food. If she won’t eat, try spoon or finger feeding it to her – cold! That can work for them the same as eating ice cream for a sore throat can work for us.

QUESTION:
I have mouth ulcers & bad body aches & sore throat & previously had a tooth infection after the ulcers started
I also have body aches and it hurts to move. its like a mixture of joint pain and muscle pain over my body.I had these symptoms mildly for approx a month with the ulcers coming and going, then a gum infection around a wisdom tooth. I was on antibiotics and the tooth got pulled out but now i am still feeling sick and more mouth ulcers appeared and i feel so sore all over. Also sore throat and ear type ache on same side as the tooth… ive had these symptoms b4 too when the ulcers happen.
I dont have a fever, I think my glands in my throat are swollen too.
I have had recurring mouth ulcers for years, and get the sore body aches and tiredness with them, but never as bad like this. It seems the symptoms getting worse and worse as the years go by. I had a b12 and iron tests, were in the low normal range. Before this last episode started i was very stressed and working long hours. I know stress can trigger the ulcers but why so much body aches and pains.
I dont know wot to do-
ANSWER:
I am wondering if you have had any blood tests for Lupus, as lupus has signs and symptoms such as yours, and you indicated that this has been going on and is getting worse. Lupus is an autoimmune disorder which can sometimes be extremely difficult to diagnose. Your doctor could order an ANA test (this test is not specific for lupus, but is an indicator of an autoimmune process such as lupus is and is positive in 90% of patients who have lupus) on you as well as some other tests that he will know about ordering that are related to various rheumatologic conditions. Sometimes, instead of one particular condition such as Lupus, you can have a mixture of related rheumatologic conditions.I would read the web info on Lupus and related illnesses and ask your doctor to check you for them. Below are some websites to start with . Write down all of your symptoms and get checked when they are bothering you a lot. Keep a journal of what happens when and what makes things better.
Lupus is a serious illness that is also sometimes hard for doctors to diagnose. Some patients feel bad for years before finally having a diagnosis. Lupus patients can look very healthy, but be extremely sick. The person’s immune system can attack every organ from the brain to the kidneys to lungs, skin, mucosal tissue, etc.
I hope you can get some medical help with this. You might want to consider getting an appointment with a rheumatologist, and if your family doctor is not helpful, find another one who will listen. Some patients report that they kept complaining to their doctor of aches and pains and fatigue and their doctor thought the patient was a hypochondriac or depressed, but depression is also a symptom of lupus.

QUESTION:
Can wisdom tooth infection cause severe fatigue?
I think the wisdom tooth I have is impacted and I also think I have an infection. I have headaches, jaw stiffness, swollen glands, and tightness/fullness feeling in my ears. Its my left lower side. There is a flap of gum over halfway on the tooth. Now the newest symptom is fatigue. I’ll be fine for awhile then all of a sudden I am completely drained of energy. Just curious if the fatigue is also linked to this tooth. Thanks
.-
ANSWER:
Sounds like you have a soft tissue impaction.“In addition to mesially, vertically, horizontally, and distally impacted, wisdom teeth are also be classified as soft tissue or bony impactions. A “soft tissue” impaction is one where the upper portion of a wisdom tooth (the tooth’s crown) has penetrated through the bone, but has not yet erupted fully through the gums.
The site below will show what the different types of impactions look like and explain why certain ones must be removed.

QUESTION:
what are the early symptoms of oral cancer?

The following are the common signs and symptoms:* Swellings/thickenings, lumps or bumps, rough spots/crusts/or eroded areas on the lips, gums, or other areas inside the mouth
* The development of velvety white, red, or speckled (white and red) patches in the mouth
* Unexplained bleeding in the mouth
* Unexplained numbness, loss of feeling, or pain/tenderness in any area of the face, mouth, or neck
* Persistent sores on the face, neck, or mouth that bleed easily and do not heal within two weeks
* A soreness or feeling that something is caught in the back of the throat
* Difficulty chewing or swallowing, speaking, or moving the jaw or tongue
* Hoarseness, chronic sore throat, or changes in the voice
* Ear pain
* A change in the way your teeth or dentures fit together – a change in your “bite”
* Dramatic weight loss
I think what you’re describing is just a bad infection/abscess. You should see your dentist as soon as possible.

Wisdom tooth removal
This factsheet is for people who want to know more about having their wisdom teeth removed.Wisdom teeth usually emerge from the gum (erupt) between the ages of 17 and 24. They are the last of the molar teeth, which are the large grinding teeth at the back of the mouth. Some people never develop wisdom teeth, others have up to four – one in each corner of the mouth.
Diagram showing the position of wisdom teeth
Impacted teeth
Wisdom teeth often cause no problems. They are described as impacted when there is not enough space for them at the back of the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, swelling, infection or damage to the teeth next to them. If the gum around the wisdom tooth is swollen the jaw may become stiff and sore. Infection at the back of the mouth can cause bad breath and a bad taste. The surgical removal (extraction) of one or more wisdom teeth can relieve these problems. However, removing the wisdom teeth does not usually improve crookedness or crowding in other teeth.
People who have problems such as infection, cysts or tumours, tooth decay, or gum disease around a wisdom tooth should think about having it removed.

QUESTION:
Wisdom tooth, infection ? please help me with my question?
Couple weeks ago, I started to have pain near the back of my molars. Then I noticed this strange taste in my mouth that I had to spit out constantly. As the days progressed I realized I had a wisdom tooth emerging. The next day or so the pain moved around my mouth to my gums, and my face started to swell a little on the opposite side of my mouth. I began to develop cold like symptoms, with a congested throat/nose/back but never a fever. I do cough up mucus sometimes but it’s usually clear, and a little thick. Sometimes it is a little yellowish but only really after I have just awaken from sleeping thru the night. I went to the dentist and he gave me amoxocillan for 7 days. I took it and initially began to feel better. Then I missed a dose and felt bad until my next one. I am finishing up my medicine but I still dont feel great. I feel alright by day but every morning I wake up congested and my body aches. Sometimes it feels like the pain is moving around my back, neck, face, eyes, head. I do often get chills, and have gotten very scared for no reason other than fear. My mom thinks it may be allergies or anxiety that is making me feel worse. I am very tired and anxious and fearful of what may be happening making it harder for my body than it is but I dont know, could I have a seperate virus, should i go back to the dentist again. One other thing that has me really scared, and pherhaps my fear is unfounded but I am supposed to have a deep cleaning soon but i am terrified if my infection symptoms dont clear up, major dental work in my mouth, which is already suffering from bad oral hygiene, ( not sure how bad, i do have two minor cavities/ gums sometimes bleed ). Anyways i am scared i could get the infection into my bloodstream during the procedure. I am healthy and have no heart problems, or any other things that i need to take medication for. Should i be concerned my symptoms, havent cleared up, the dentists says i’ll be better after cleaning, please help with my questions.
The initial infection taste has cleared up since taking my anti-biotic and initially the pain in my mouth went away, yesterday my gums and teeth started hurt a little while eating. Today, specific area where gum hurts near top mouth. Spitting out mucus, nose congested.-

QUESTION:
Diarrhea for a week, no other symptoms?
I’ve had diarrhea for about a week now.I’m in overall good health, get enough sleep and food, am hydrated (drink a min. of 2 liters of water daily).
Possible causes I’m trying to work out –
I smoke ~pack a day
Stopped drinking coffee/soda for 3 days now so trying to rule this out
Was taking ibuprofen (about 400 mg. a day under the form of Nurofen tablets) for a few days due to a toothache.
Drank Dalacin C antibiotics (300 mg of clindamycin) for 6 days (4 tablets a day, every 6 hours)
Had a gum infection 1 week prior to the diarrhea, hence the ibuprofen and antibiotics.
Diarrhea is just soft, not watery, with no irritations to stomach and does not wake me up. Usually I go in the morning and is something I’d compare to a hangover passing – you know the kind
No profound anal itching, no stomach cramps or pains.
Now what?
1 more thing – might have had a very minor cold as was under pouring rain for about an hour, but the diarrhea started a few days prior to that. Maybe just leftovers from a stomach irritation due to the pills I was taking at the time? But for 1 week shouldn’t have the symptoms dissapeared?-
ANSWER:
Well you have a couple of things that may be contributing to your diarrhea. Smoking will relax your intestines and make you go more frequently (I am a smoker as well.) Ibuprofen is HORRIBLE for your stomach. IBU is in a class called NSAID (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory). This also includes Motrin & Aleve. NSAIDS are known to cause diarrhea and have also been linked to cause colitis and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Clindamycin, as you know, is an antibiotic and also causes stomach upset and diarrhea.
If you have a toothache, try to stay away from IBU and take Tylenol. Penicillin or Cipro would be a better antibiotic for you to use instead of Clindamycin and they would be gentler on your stomach.
So, see if you can be put on another medication and stop taking the Ibuprofen. You seem to be drinking enough water but make sure you are getting enough fiber in your diet to bulk up your stool a bit. Eat some beans, broccoli, almonds, carrots, etc. And make sure to take your meds with food and a full glass of water. I hope this helps.

My daughter is taking Quetapine for psychosis symptoms but….?
she has had a gum infection over christmas and was prescribed very strong antibiotics…whilst on the antibiotics her voices came back only this time she got really scared due to the nasty nature (the voices she has heard previously have always been male and kinda gruff but never telling her what to do) This time they were telling her to “Hit him,Hit him…over & over again, she has no idea who she was supposed to hit though..no name given! …and to be fair she looked scared to death even though she is a feisty kinda girl….does anyone think this could be down to the antibiotics dampening down her Quetapine med’s and or is Quetapine masking the fact that her condition is getting worse…any advice would be greatly appreciated…thanks in advance x-
ANSWER:
I take Quetiapine myself 800mg daily in slow release for schizophrenia. I know there are certain medications which will reduce its effectiveness and there are several antibiotics on the market that can interact with the drug. If you are unsure check out drugs.com as they have a full list of drug interactions and what those interactions are. I know with time the level of quetiapine may need increasing or another antipsychotic may be required to keep hallucinations and positive symptoms at bay. I have had my quetiapine increased in the past year from 600mg to 1000mg and then back to 800mg.I hope I’ve been of some help to you. Please do not take your daughter off her antipsychotic medication as this will no doubt have detrimental effects on her stability and mental health.

QUESTION:
Can I die from a tooth infection?
I’ve had an abcessed tooth for 3 years. The gums opened a drain in my gums itself and the pain and swelling came and went several times before finally I had to go to the dentist. I got antibiotics which didn’t fully kick the infection and a root canal was done. The infection was so bad that it’s still in the bone and it hurts. They had mentioned previously an apioectomy? I don’t have the money for anything and I’m getting strange blurred vision, headaches, tingly face, and I’m not sure if it’s related, but the swelling and pain returned at the same time that these symptoms came about. I’m scared that I may get a brain infection and die… is that possible? Where can I go for help?-
ANSWER:
People have died from tooth infections. Go to a dentist and ask if you can make payments. Or see your local assistance office or ask a church for help.

QUESTION:
Why do people with congenital heart disease have to take antibiotics before any dental procedure, or surgery?
or do things like…….Call your doctor if you have symptoms of an infection (sore throat, general body aches, fever).
Take good care of your teeth and gums to prevent infections. See your dentist for regular visits.
Take antibiotics before you undergo any procedure that may cause bleeding, such as: any dental work (even a basic teeth cleaning), invasive tests (any test that may involve blood or bleeding), and most major or minor surgery.
please explain fully-
ANSWER:
All these situations can cause spillage of bacteria into the blood stream. Through the blood stream it may reach to damaged heart structures and lodge there. If bacteria multiply in damaged heart structures, it leads an infection of the heart which needs prolonged antibiotic treatment. This can be prevented to a certain extent by the precautions which you mentioned.
