The gums in our mouth are also known as gingivae. They contain mucous membranes which are connected to the membrane that surrounds the bone, with the help of the thick fibrous tissues. These gums, surround the crown or the exposed portion of the tooth. They are rich in blood vessels and they mainly receive blood from the alveolar arteries. The gums are at least 1 mm thick, but with age, they decrease in size, thus exposing the surface of the tooth. The gum is prone to several infections if one does not take proper care of them. Hence it’s better to know what are the various gum infection treatment methods.

Gum Infections: Causes and Treatments
If one does not maintain a good oral hygiene, then gum disease and infection is bound to happen. The infection occurs due to growth of bacteria in the mouth, which destroys the tissues that surround the gums. Also, when plaque starts forming on teeth and if the person does not get it removed, it starts to harden and forms tartars, which in turn becomes the breeding ground for various germs that cause the infection.
A person who is suffering from gum infection, will suffer from bad breath, swollen gums, redness of gums, severe toothache, bleeding gums, loose tooth, formation of pus between the teeth and the gums and various other oral problems. Hence, it’s important that one knows what are the various gum infection treatment.
Treatment for Gum Infection: Home Remedies
Don’t you thinks it’s better, treating gum infection without antibiotics? Some might not suit some people, while some may even cause side effects in others. Hence, gum infection treatment at home is the best way to get rid of the problem. These are natural remedies and do not cause any side effects. Given below are some gum infection home remedies, which you can try out, in case you too are suffering from the same problem.
aSwishing warm water mixed with salt in your mouth, will reduce the infection in the gums and will also reduce the chances of the problem of swollen gums. Do this after every meal in order to clean your mouth well.
aHydrogen peroxide powder ( spoon), mixed with cup water, and rising your mouth with that, is one of the best gum infection treatment to kill the infection causing bacteria.
aFor severe pain, the best home remedy is clove and cinnamon oil. Whenever you have gum infection or pain due to tooth decay, a drop of this oil will ease the pain.
aYou can also make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it on the infected area. This too will help you to kill the infections. There, seriously, is no end to baking soda uses.
aAloe vera, is a great remedy, when it comes to gum disease treatment. You can either apply some aloe vera paste on the infected area, or if you drink the juice everyday, then even that will help the gums from further infection.
a’An apple a day keeps the doctor away’. I would also like to add, ‘an apple a day, keeps gum diseases away’. Eating an apple everyday, will only make your gums stronger and even more healthier. The nutrients that are present in the apples are responsible for that. So, leave aside that burger and pick up the apple if you want to save your gums.
aA mixture of lemon juice and salt, is also one of the best gum infection treatment. Just apply some on the infected area and the pain will be gone in a few minutes.
aGarlic can also used as an effective painkiller to reduce the pain due to gum infection. You can mix garlic and rock salt and use it for the treatment of gum infection.
aTake a healthy diet and in your diet include lot’s of calcium, as you already know, calcium is good for the bones and teeth.
There, next time you or anyone suffers from severe gum infection problems, you can always try out the gum infection treatments that are given above. These home remedies are bound to give you quick relief from the pain. But that does not mean that you will not visit the dentist. They will stop the infection from spreading further. Also, do follow a proper dental care. Then you will not face any of these problems.

QUESTION:
Gum infection treatment?
I think i have infected gums, one area of gum around my eye tooth has been sore for a few days, so today i put some peroxide on it, it immediatly turned white and burned. After brushing i used mouth wash and flossed, and used the peroxide again this evening and the same thing happened, along with some blood. My question is, what can i do to help with until i can get into a dentist?
Thanks for the help, it ended up just being irritated from the toothpaste i was using and a build up of tartar, i saw the dentist and got a good cleaning, said everything should be fine in about a week.-
ANSWER:
Stop using the peroxide, my dentist told me that it takes the oxygen out of the gumline, dont use flavored/whitening toothpaste for a couple of days until the pain/redness stops…instead throw away your toothbrush and begin using a new one, first dampen it with water & then sprinkle pure baking soda to brush your teeth & gums. If you do floss, try not go so deep in the gumline. You can brush with baking soda as often as you like. If it is an infection, gargle with warm salt water twice a day. Good Luck!

Treatment for an infection on my gum?
Well the hard and painful lump is the infection (same colour as my gum). My mom’s not letting me see the dentist yet and she said that I have to wait. I’m really scared because if I don’t see the dentist in time, then I don’t know what’s going to happen to me. I want to know any treatments for now.
I had this for a few days by the way. Please answer!-
ANSWER:
I had the exact same thing. Hurts, huh?? Do you have braces?? If someone like a dentist or orthodonist has been messing/moving with your teeth then you can get something like that. In my case I went to the dentist and they flushed it and the pain went away instantly but then it was still there ( pain free though ) and they sent me to an oral surgeon to get it cut off. turned out it didnt need to be cut off. then in the end i had to have a root canal which hurt at the time but now i cant feel a thing so show your mom this message and have her take you to the dentist so you can get better….. get well soon!!!

QUESTION:
can i go to a hospital for a gum infection and apply for charity care?
i have an infection in my gum from what i believe was a popcorn kernel stuck in there. it’s been a few days and it doesn’t seem to be getting worse, but not better either. is it possible to go to a hospital for treatment/antibiotics? i need to apply for charity care because i can’t afford hospital bills. i’m asking about the hospital because the health clinic in my area with a dental program is not free.-

I would just suggest seeing a dentist. He’ll charge on an average for a limited oral evaluation-problem focus. They can probe and flush the area to ensure proper healing and can prescribe you an antibiotic if necessary.

QUESTION:
Can listerine lessen the severity of a gum infection?
I have a mild gum infection and next month, I start my first treatment for it. I have now been vigorously using my new electronic toothbrush on my teeth as well as flossing twice every day. My mom bought a thingy of listerine to gargle with. My question is:…does listerine lessen the severity of a gum infection? My dad said it would but I’m not so sure (heck my dad isn’t even a dentist).
Can I also ask the dentist to use novocaine for my treatment?
-
ANSWER:
Yes and no. Listerine kills the bacteria in your mouth for about 45 minutes. So, it does kill the bacteria, but not for a long enough time to be effective. So, you should continue to use Listerine 1-2 times a day, but realize that Listerine is one of the many tools you are going to use to fight your gum disease. It is also great that you have an electric toothbrush, that will do wonders for your teeth. Make sure you brush as much as possible (at least 2+ times a day), floss at least 2+ a day, use your Listerine, and continue to see your dentist and hygienist. If you do these things, you should be able to overcome your gum disease and have a happy life with your soon to be happy teeth and gums!

QUESTION:
Most of my gum infection went away, however, there are “some stuff” left over. Will a salt water gargle help?
I finished the last treatment of my gum infection and I was told that there was some plaque in those “hard-to-reach” areas of my mouth (my wisdom teeth). I was told to spend a little longer brushing them for the next three months before my regular brushing appointment.Would a salt water rinse/gargle help at all? I keep brushing in that area and I sometimes draw a little blood.
P.S. I will have my wisdom teeth removed sometime in August or September.
-
ANSWER:
First, brush your teeth with toothpaste topped with baking soda and a few drops of peroxide. This is a WONDERFUL disinfectant. Then gargle with Listerine Mouthwash (because Listerine is the best for disinfecting and fighting germs).
If you want, you can gargle with salt, but that usually helps with infections of the throat instead. Don’t worry, once you put the baking soda on your toothpaste when you brush, there’s plenty of salt in the bakin’ soda!
Do this for about four or five days. You don’t have to do it anymore after that. You should be all set. But if you see any sign of infection, go talk to your dentist, because infection can spread and cause problems THROUGHOUT your entire body if not treated. A simple antibiotic might help (if you don’t see improvement after brushing with the mixture I told you about above).
By the way, after you’ve finished the brushing as mentioned above, you’ll want to throw out that toothbrush so that you’re not spreading any more infection to yourself. Then start using a brand new toothbrush.
To prevent further infections in the future, floss regularly. That way the food won’t get caught in between your teeth and create a problem such as more infections in the future.
Hope this helped!

QUESTION:
Dentist said I have a gum infection and close to gingivitis-told me to floss more.Help?
Dentist did not give any other suggestions on what I can do about the infection in my gums etc. Is there an over the counter rinse I can use or any other treatment option I can do myself to help along with the flossing and brushing?-
ANSWER:
The gum tissue surrounding the teeth is called the gingiva. Gingivitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the gingiva characterized by tender, swollen, and bleeding gum tissue. This condition occrrs in 85% of the population.Gingivitis can be prevented through regular oral hygiene that includes daily brushing and flossing. Rigorous plaque control programmes along with periodontal scaling and curettage also have proved to be helpful.
A dentist or dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning of the teeth and gums; following this, persistent oral hygiene is necessary. The removal of plaque is usually not painful, and the inflammation of the gums should be gone between one and two weeks. A gargling of brine water also helps. Oral hygiene including proper brushing and flossing is required to prevent the recurrence of gingivitis. Anti-bacterial rinses or mouthwash, in particular chlorhexidine digluconate 0.2% solution, may reduce the swelling and local mouth gels which are usually antiseptic and anaesthetic can also help.

Management and treatment of Koch infection. Combined antibiotics.?
Koch’s infection is the medical term for TB infection. It is ok to include treatment with Fixcom4 and Fixcom3 conbination with common antibiotics like mefenemic acid/penicillin to control pain and swelling on other common ailment. Gum swelling, throat infection, wounds…. and intakes of multivitamin supplements.
The best treatment is the conbination of 4 antibiotics considered most effective by the UN for infectious desease control and it has to be taken over a period of time. Fixcom 4 for two months at 4 tablets per day to bombard the infection and fixcom3 there after for 4 months at 4 tablets per day for maintenence to prevent recurrence.
Would other medication interferre with the TB medications?
If there is other ailment that requires other medication will you have to stop the Fixcom intake?I hate this tag of desease on my self and would like to get rid of it as soon as possible so i have to make sure I make all days intake of Fixcom4 and fixcom3.

ANSWER:
Hi EdI dont know about drug combos, but here is what I do know. Ideas on how to get well.
Cause
TB is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. TB causes 1,800 deaths per year and 20,000 new cases are reported annually. The primary risk groups are older African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians. Also at greater risk are people with illnesses that decrease immune function, such as alcoholics, malnutrition, diabetics, and people who are HIV positive.Caution: Drugs that act as immune suppressants, such as corticosteroids, can retrigger tuberculosis.
——————————————————————————–
Natural Cures
Note: Prevention is the key to treating and minimizing the spread of TB. This is achieved through vaccinations, such as the Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine. Contact tracing using skin testing and x-ray should be performed on relatives and friends of patients with TB as an effective way to detect early cases of TB that have not yet presented with symptoms. Proper diagnosis must include a chest X-ray and skin and sputum tests, and proper treatment must include drugs.
Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet that emphasizes raw vegetables and pure filtered water. Pears, pear juice, and pear sauce can also be helpful, as pears can help hasten healing of the lungs. Other helpful foods include fenugreek and alfalfa sprouts, garlic, pomegranate, and all forms of fermented milk such as yogurt and kefir.
Herbs: Combine the tinctures of echinacea, elecampane, and mullein in equal parts and take one teaspoon three times a day. This remedy is very effective for soothing the lungs.
Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. I suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments.
Juice Therapy: Combine raw potato juice with an equal amount of carrot juice. Add one teaspoon of olive or almond oil and one teaspoon of honey, and drink three glasses each day.
Lifestyle: Get plenty of fresh air, rest, light, exercise, and relaxation.
Nutritional Supplementation: The following supplements are recommended for TB: Vitamin A, beta carotene, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, Vitamin E, multiminerals, essential fatty acids, zinc, garlic capsules, citrus seed extract, lipotropic formula, deglycerinated licorice, and lung glandulars.
Topical Treatment: Eucalyptus oil packs applied topically over the lungs can help break up congestion and collected fluids.
Alternative Professional Care
If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating TB: Acupuncture, Detoxification Therapy, Energy Medicine (Light Beam Generator, Ondamed), Homeopathy, Light Therapy, Magnetic Field Therapy, Oxygen Therapy, Qigong, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.Best of health to you

QUESTION:
Can antibiotic treatment of gums help an infection at the roots of a molar?
There is a pocket in the gum next to this molar due to gingivitis. The Xray also shows roundish infected areas around each root of the molar. If Arestin (antibiotic) is applied to this pocket, might that also improve the root area infections? Or do I need a root canal too?
A year ago I had terrible throbbing in this tooth. The same dentist X-rayed it but couldn’t see anything. The pain gradually subsided and went away. (Could this mean the tooth died?!) Today the dentist asked whether I have dental insurance (no) before applying Arestin. I wonder if she just didn’t want to ruin my Christmas!-
ANSWER:
Rounded infected areas seen on an x-ray can typically mean the tooth needs a root canal. Arestin will not help it. I have not seen the x-ray but when the nerve is dead in the tooth the rounded areas around the tooth will appear radiolucent (darker) than the surrounding bone. If this is so then the tooth needs a root canal. A thorough cleaning will also help any gingivitis around the tooth followed up by thorough home care.

QUESTION:
Tooth/Root infection at bifurcation. Treatment options?
Molar with old root canal and crown. x-ray shows infection at the root bifurcation plus a small pustule on gum line. What are treatment options at this point?. re-doing root canal and the gum surgery? or extraction?. Thanks.-
ANSWER:
Infection in the area of the bifurcation, may be coming from a vertical fracture of the tooth between the roots or possibly a gum problem. If either of these two things are present, the tooth has a poor prognosis and would be better off if extracted. You would have a much better prognosis with replacing it with an implant. Good luck.

QUESTION:
best prevention for gum/infection/tooth problems?
Hello,
I’ve got several family members with gum problems, receding gums, cavities, etc.Is there a mouthwash product in the market that can help prevent future infections, gum issues, cavities, etc? Or some kind of gargling?
Natural treatments also ok.They do daily brushing and stay away from sugary foods, but these problems keep coming back. They are both in their 60s and take care of their teeth, but don’t go to dentists as they are uninsured.
Thank you!
-
ANSWER:
Going to the dentist is the best way to prevent and in saying so, that is their problem. Only professionals can remove the calculus build up that you cannot get off w/ brushing. Which then leads to infection, bone loss, cavaites….. Mouth wash is helpful, but your most important tool is diligent home care (brushing after every meal or sugary snack and FLOSSING!) Keep away from soda/energy drinks and juice.

QUESTION:
if i stop taking sugary food for like a week or so, will the bacteria in my gum decrease?
i had gum infection, still in consideration between pull it off or do canal treatment. The canal treatment is 400gbp + filling GBP100 . if i pulled it off i cost me GBP100.So, since the bacteria only going to multiple if their had their food which is sugary stuff, if i stop taking any sugary, will it kill the bacteria and i can have my happy life again?
-
ANSWER:
Root canal treatment treats the root of the tooth, not the gum. Anyway, unfortunately the damage is already done on this tooth. The decay (resulting from bacteria and sugar) has already taken place to the extent that the tooth is now dead as the decay has gone so deeply that it has killed the nerve in the root. Root canal treatment takes that dead nerve away and fills it up with a filling material.Cutting out the sugar supply to the bacteria at this stage would not make any difference. Carbohydrate does increase the growth of plaque (bacteria) but the sugar in the carbohydrate turns the bacteria into acid and this is what damages the tooth.
you CAN stop early dental decay by limiting the amount of sugar you have in your diet and by brushing away the plaque using a fluoride toothpaste. Decay can be arrested if sugar intake is decreased.
But your case, your tooth is too damaged.I would suggest to save your tooth if you can afford the canal treatment and talk to your dentist about sugar intake so that you don’t have this problem again.
(can’t help thinking your user name means you like cola?….even sugar free fizzy drinks can cause decay through acid erosion. Talk to your dentist about diet – it’s their job to advise. )

QUESTION:
can antibiotics clear gum infections?

I was prescribed erythromycin (antibiotic) and difflam-c (mouth antiseptic gargle) last saturday for duration of 2 weeks. It’s been 2 days now. How long will the pus go away and do i have to prick the pocket pus to let it come out or leave it for it to go away or go to see the dentist to treat it? What will the dentist actually do to get rid of it and what is the treatment called? Gum infection is due to a cracked tooth 14 and x-rayed done twice but no abscessed found and roots are ok. QUESTION:
What can I due about a gum boil that didn’t respond to treatment?
I have a gum boil (fistula) due to a failed root canal on a tooth that’s a support for a front bridge. Had it treated by drilling through the tooth & cleaning out the infection, but it didn’t take. I still have the fistula & it’s worse. Endodontist said the tooth has a fracture so bacteria can still get in. I sat in her chair three times, paid a grand & the infection’s
worse than before. Hurts now too. Always aware of it. Annoying and a fear of bone loss. And her & my dentist say the next step is to pull the tooth, lose the bridge & get implants? Like I got that kind of money.
Needless to say I’m not happy. Couldn’t she have cleaned out the infection and sealed the fracture? My dentist sealed the temp filling the Endo put in and said nothing should get through. But if there’s still infected space there? My feeling is the endodontist did a sloppy job and missed all the infection. Am I wrong in thinking that? Can I try again to get the infection removed? Any other alternatives?-
ANSWER:
Your dentist and endodontist are absolutely right. There is nothing that can be done to a tooth with a root fracture. This is something that can happen when a tooth has a root canal OR the tooth had a fracture in the whole time and if small, is undetectable unless you keep getting reinfected. It’s a big bummer, but it happens sometimes. Your dentist or endodontist probably did great work and this is just the luck of the draw. Your other alternative to getting the implants is a partial, but they are not the best. Talk to your dentist about what else can be done. Sorry.

QUESTION:
I think I may have a gum infection! Please helP!?
Okay so I’m 12 years old and my gum behind my back molar dips in. It was hurting and feels a little swollen.
I just checked and it has a black dot in it…
What could this be?
And what is the treatment for it?-
ANSWER:
First of all you are too young for it to be a wisdom tooth. it could be your secondary molars coming in, if in fact if it is swollen you might have a infection or food caught in between the teeth/gums. if it starts hurting a lot more u can go buy some gel they sell by the pharmacy department to numb it up so you wont feel so much pain until you go see a dentist b/c they need to see whats going on under the gum and the only way they could do that is a x-ray. good luck

QUESTION:
Gum infection 1 month after filling tooth. No tooth ache/sensitivity, tooth sensitive to pressure. Root canal?
Hi,
I had a deep filling done in one of my tooth (left side) 1 month ago. I was rarely using that side to chew until 2 days before when I filled my tooth on the right side. its then that i noticed that this tooth is sensitive to pressure. After 2 days, it developed a swelling in the gum below and had pus discharge from the gum. The tooth shows no discoloration, is not sensitive to hot/cold, no tooth ache. My dentist suggests i should go for a root canal therapy, but i am afraid if that is the real problem, because i have no tooth pain, and the tooth x-ray she showed me did not show any cavities running through the root of the tooth or below it ( if thats what to be looked for) Any ideas if this is a candidate for root canal treatment?? Can this be a problem of just gum abscess??-
ANSWER:
You can have the nerve of the tooth die without a single cavity on it. Anything to irritate the nerve enough will do it such as grinding teeth, deep filling, chewing on ice, etc.
The tooth may not show discoloration for months or years. It will not necessarily be sensitive or have a toothache because the infection is already draining out (lucky for you actually that you’re not in pain).
Yes, it could be a periodontal gum abscess or the source can be the nerve of the tooth – only a dentist can diagnose the difference.
If you’re in doubt, go get a second opinion so that your mind will be at ease. But a deep filling is frequently the cause of the nerve dying and later needing a root canal.

Gum line abcess after root canal treatment???
Hi, before anyone says, yes I am calling the dentist first thing in the morning.I have a small abcess which developed overnight after the root canal treatment. I have the normal swelling and tenderness.
My question is, if anyone has had this happen, what did the dentist do???
I am scared she will say I have to cut the gum to let it drain or worse still, have it re-done.
I know I will have to go with whatever she suggests but I was hoping antibiotics would be tried first but I don’t know what would normally be done.
I have had anibiotics to clear th infection I had before treatment and the abcess was drained through the back. Its in the same place?? but the root is filled so how did I end up with the infection in the same spot???
If anyone can tell me what would normally happen now I would be greatful.
Yeah, this has occured after I had the root canal done. Not a happy bunny

ANSWER:
The same thing happened to my daughter. I had her rinse with a solution of peroxide which in turn allowed for some drainage and relief and the following morning the doctor prescribed a good dose of antibiotics. Most likely because it is an infection the doctor will not do anything(if anything needs to be done–but this is post procedure, right?) as there is an infection present. The norm is to have any infection or possibility of infection totally cleared up before any work can be performed.

QUESTION:
How would a gum infection be treated … ?
My young preschool age daughter had some dental work done on Friday, which included a couple of stainless steel caps. Now the gums around two of the caps (that are next to each other) are very infected. I call her dentist, and she tells me that I need to brush her infected gums HARD with Listerine every couple of hours. This is horribly painful for her, we have to hold her down and she shrieks the whole time. The dentist said that somehow this is my fault for not brushing her teeth. But the thing is, I was brushing her teeth. And I don’t understand why she hasn’t called her in an antibiotic. Is child torture really the recommended treatment for this?-
ANSWER:
The gums most likely are not infected but inflamed and irritated. This can be for 2 reasons. First they may have been hurt while the teeth were being ground down. Secondly the crowns may be too long and are going too far under the gums. STOP with the Listerine brushing and just start with some warm saline rinses every couple of hours. If things are not all better in a few days they need to be looked at and then antibiotics and/ or new crowns may need to be considered. Good luck to you both.

QUESTION:
How does a “full mouth debridement” work and how long does it take?
I have to undergo this treatment for my mild gum infection tomorrow. How does it work and how long does it take?-
ANSWER:
it takes about an hour. this is a deeper cleaning that removes bigger pieces of plaque that have hardened and require more time than just a polish. It’s WORTH it!

QUESTION:
A Hard lump on gums below right molar teeth after infection during Root Canal Treatment ?
Hi, i am 23 , i was having root canal treatment of my right 1st molar teeth, but between this i got infection RCT was not completed the infection begins after the second sitting when he remove my teeth root out, dentist tried best by giving meds to cure nfeciton but it was not getting cured the infection was their for aroung 2 weeks , dentist also drained it. but now there is a lump a hard lump down outside part of 1st and second molar teeth. I got my teeth removed dentist cleaned the infection , now after two days thats today . the place from where the teeth was removed is getting cured and geeting better but the hard lump is still their. i am taking med ( Tab: MaxiKind CV – 375 three times a day, Tab: Zinase -DP three time a day& LycoRed once a day) these tablets i have been taking since last 1 week .Q1) Can any one help me on this hard lump will go away or i need some surgery.
Q2) Will this hard lump will become pus and will be drained
Thanks Dr Matt W-
ANSWER:
Q1: The lump is due to the swelling and inflammation from the infection. Now that you have removed the source of the infection, i.e. the tooth, then the lump will gradually disappear. It may take up to 2-3 weeks. As long as it is not getting BIGGER, then you have nothing to worry about. Once you have finished the current antibiotics (MoxiKind), then you won’t need any more, even though the swelling will still be present. Surgery is definitely NOT required.
Q2. It is very, very unlikely that pus will develop now. If it does, then the pain will come back, and the lump may soften and enlarge.
There is no need or benefit from using a mouthwash. No biopsy is required. Nonsense.

QUESTION:
mouth or gum infection?
2 weeks ago there was a a white-vein like thing stretching 1 cm from the opening of my mouth to the lining near my wisdom tooth.
Days later there was a white “gum-like” near my wisdom tooth which happens to grew at the end of that vein-like structure.
It was really painful whenever I chew something on my left so I now chew on the right and my cheek was swollen.
I happen to have a fever and chills and flu same symptoms that I had experienced when my wisdom tooth popped ..and my flu became a sinusitis and as of now that thing that grew from my mouth is still painful..CAn somebody tell me what is this thing?what are the treatments for this..’coz the dental check up here is very expensive somehow my allowance won’t do..please help me.
-
ANSWER:
I hope that by now you have gone to a dentist and been treated. The only thing I can think of is an abscess. The only treatment is prescription antibiotics and removal of the offending tooth. You probably already have inflammation circulating throughout your body and that can ultimately adversely affect all your organs, even your heart. It’s nothing to mess with. This, unfortunately, is a best case scenario. Otherwise I have no idea what it could be. Good luck. I hope you get better.

QUESTION:
gum tooth and pain after root canal treatment?
i had a car crash 4 yrs ago damaged my bottom 3 front teeth very badly my then dentist built them up and “cemented”them back in i never had any problems at all now my dentist has left her replacement took one look at my teeth said i was endanger of loosing the teeth as my previous dentist has put far too much cement ther which she then filed down then yesterday i went to her and told her since she had done this work they felt loose and sensitive she said this is because i had an infection and the way to sort this was to do root canal treatment which she then done on monday.she drilled out the back of my tooth done the root canal putdication in there put a temp filling in and said come back in 3 weeks the prob is i am in absolute agony i now have a lump on my gum it hurts to close my teeth together my whole chin area of teeth and gums throbs and aches i am dosed up on painkllers that aint workin and i cant get an emergency appointment anywhere what antibiiotics cn i take please help me-
ANSWER:
You can’t get antibiotics over the counter. I wouldn’t go back to that woman. I have had multiple root canals and never had that problem of pain after the first few days. Never had a lump or agony. Can you be seen at a hospital emergency room? If I had your problem, my dentist would see me that day even if he had to stay late or come in early. He’s done it before.I think you may have an infection now or a badly done root canal. The root is supposed to be dead so you feel no pain from the tooth. I have an extra root which always hurts when a new root canal is done because the shot doesn’t touch it, but even that was over as soon as the work was done.
I think you need to try to find an emergency dentist or go to the emergency room. This should not be happening. Take any paperwork she gave you, too.
Good luck. I can’t even imagine what you are going through.

What to do about the bone loss caused by periodontitis?
Periodontitis has been discovered late. I kept delaying treatment due to lack of dental insurance. however the gum infection got severe and i felt tooth aches and loosening. Dentist said I need this procedure every 3 months. What to do about the bone that has been lost?-

QUESTION:
Post Root Canal treatment pain, dentist says no antibiotic unless swollen, do you always swell with infection?
After seeing 3 dentists, and no one being able to treat TMJ pain while working on a root canal, I finally found a dentist who can, and it pretty much went without a hitch. The other dentists had told me that I would need two root canals, this dentist said just one and that he could patch the second and crown it.
I had a root canal done last Wednesday, upper back molar, on the same side lower back molar he also did a patch over the nerve to save me from a root canal, this he covered with a crown. I had the crown done on the root canal the same day as well. The lower molar with the crown put on had a crack 5mm below the gum line.
On the weekend I was in quite a bit of pain, at a Christmas party several people asked me why I was not given antibiotics. I explained that when I asked the dentist about antibiotics he said he did not feel they were necessary for all people and would let me know if he felt I needed them (this was said pre-rootcanal and restoration). The dentist is widely popular and very open minded, he uses the latest technology as well, and is extremely expensive, but I needed to know that the work would be done properly. He said that he had gone to a conference recently that explained that Antibiotics are being over prescribed and that when you really need them they may not work, so he prefers to not prescribe anymore. Then he said “rather lose a tooth or a life?”. I mean what do you say to that and anyway he never indicated I had an infection, so I said nothing. I left that Wednesday, no antibiotics and told to take Ibuprofen for relief. I also have a TMJ issue but my jaw has not been too bad. The dentist was quick to scurry out of the room, so the assistant said I was good to go and just to be careful not to chew on my tongue until the freezing…I was surprised I thought for sure that I would be a few days till I could bite, but again, no one told me otherwise. I tried that evening to chew but it was freaking awful when I hit the tooth. So I continued to chew on the opposite side of my mouth.
Monday I called the dentist with horrible pain from the night before (Sunday I was in excrutiating pain for a few hours in the middle of the night, throbbing and shooting into my jaw below my ear) Isaid that I felt maybe I had an infection, since everything I have read indicates that there should be little to no pain post root canal and as well when I had this pain previously I was told it was an infection and that is how I discovered that I needed the root canal in the first place. Tuesday I saw him, he fixed my bite and said after much convincing on my part that he would draw up a prescription but only because it would put my mind at ease and he made me promise him that would not take it unless and only unless my face became swollen, gave me his personal cell phone number and then told me that he had a 99% success rate and that in all his years he has only had two failed root canals and that pain from a root canal treatment can occur upwards of a month post root canal? If this is true why out of the dozens of people I have spoken with and all of the resources online and medical books does it indicate that it should only be a few days? I have not filled the prescription, I have only taken a whack load of Ibuprofen. The prescription is for Erythromycin and for some reason I feel like I should be taking it.1. EVERYONE is asking why the heck I am not on antibiotics…like I am crazy not to insist.
2. I am scared silly after all of these people asking me and telling me horror stories of abcesses or infections spreading to brains….sepsis, etc….
3. I don’t usually give into irrational fear but I feel like the information is so completely conflicted about root canals, everyone has a story, opinion and everyones dentist has a different way of doing things.
4. The pain in my bottom tooth is radiating toward my lower jaw, to where if you slide your hand from your chin all the way back to the point where it goes up, right there…this is the patched tooth. This pain comes and goes the flap of skin behind it is swollen and irritated. Sometimes itchy as well.
5. The top molar with the root canal is sore and has shooting pains, only when I bite, the pain that bothers me is if I slide my finger all the way up almost to where my cheek bone is it hurts, like as though its almost near a sinus, I figure its just because that is the very tip of the tooth. But again, I don’t know. The tooth also feels itchy when I bite down. Like I want to wiggle it to ease the itch.
I hate the fact that there is so much varying information regarding this issue and I also hate the fact that I can’t get a straight answer regarding infections. I would hate to get a serious infection because I was too intimidated to take this prescription. After 00.00 I am a bit irritated that I have this much pain and no answers. And scared that I have an abscess/infection and just don’t have obvious swelling. A-
ANSWER:
Woah, I’m sorry you’re in pain.I think this is normal but there should be something they should be able to do to ease your discomfort.

QUESTION:
Pressure Sensitive Teeth – Possible infection?
About 3 days ago my number 10 tooth (front to the right) started to get a little pressure sensitive, the next day the number 9 tooth started to get sensitive to pressure as well. Now day the number 10,9 and 8 teeth are all pressure sensitive. If I even bite my tooth with my bottom teeth it aches. Above my teeth there is a small bump, not too big but it stings when touched. 2 days ago I started taking Amoxicillin and the pain has decreased slightly, there used to be a dull constant toothache pain but now it has gone and only hurts when I bite down. I have not been able to eat solid foods as I cannot chew. I was wondering if anyone knew what this was and possible treatment. Dentist is closed until after the new year although my doctor is open tomorrow for a few days before new year. Any recommendations on what to do or what this could be. The teeth feel wobbly also, probably just me exaggerating but I’m thinking it could be a gum infection to due with the small lump which may be an abscess. – Thanks-
ANSWER:
Probably, you have a cavity, an abscess, or both, on number 9. The pain you are feeling on 8 and 10 is either referred pain from 9 or due to a underlying infection.Your dentist may be on vacation, but he or she will surely have someone covering for emergencies just like yours. Call your dentist’s office, because the information is probably on the recording there. You do not want to just medicate with Amoxicillin, because there may be more effective antibiotics for this particular infection. And if there is a cavity, it should get filled right away if it is hurting so much.
I wish you well. It’s tough to get somethng like this at any time, but especially now during the holiday season. Good luck, and make that call today (remember, the dentist’s tape is on, even f he’s not around).

QUESTION:
Help -severe pain and swelling to gums after a root canal treatment -what could be the problem?
4 days ago I had a root canal treatment to a pre molar (on my bottom right) after that there is no tooth (i.e a gap), following some infection seen on an OPG x-ray that I had for some other work there were no symptoms otherwise in this tooth i.e. no pain or gums swelling.Day 1 -after treatment Tuesday
During the root canal treatment the dentist found that someone had previously tried to do a root canal and had only done 1 canal and that he found another 2 canals filled with black stuff (infection). I had only ever had root canal treatment done at their clinic -but over time dentists have changed. He cleaned out and finished the whole treatment in one visit (about 50 minutes). He took small x-ray before and after and says they were fine. Later that same afternoon after the anaesthetic wore off I started to experience mild pain in the tooth -which i knew is normal so took painkillers of Ibuprofen and paracetamol. however by evening the pain was getting worse.Day 2 -Wed
I continued with the painkillers but by evening the pain had become moderate to extreme at times. In the night it was unbearable and I could hardly sleep, so the next morning I planned to contact the clinic.Day 3 -Thurs
Contacted clinic for emergency appointment -dentist saw me and said it must be some infection and prescribed me 250mg erythromycin. At this time there was slight swelling around the area it looked red and the tooth itself was sensitive to touch and painful all the time without touch.I started the course immediately with painkillers of Ibuprofen (nurofen express -liquid capsules 200mg -400mg) with paracetamol in between at the recommended intervals. I even took diclofenac as well when the others were not having effect -still no help. However, by evening again the pain this time was UNBEARABLE. I could not sleep throughout the night it was so bad and nothing seemed to help me. I looked into my mouth and noticed my gums had swollen even more and this was actually more visible after the pre-molar tooth he treated -the swelling was actually far greater on where the wisdom tooth is supposed to be rather than this pre-molar tooth. I don’t have a fully grown wisdom tooth but just a tiny growth of where the wisdom tooth should appear -the wisdom tooth growth that appeared a few years ago will never grow into a tooth, but after this root canal on pre-molar the gums are heavily swollen around and underneath and behind the pre-polar area where the wisdom tooth is. Even my face and jaw are slightly swollen and painful as I have this growing swelling to gums.
In the past when I’ve had tooth ache due to infection i’ve had amoxicillin or metroniodazole which usually starts to work after a day, but erythromycin was doing nothing for me -even with painkillers.Day 4 -Fri
I contact clinic again -saw dentist -This time he could see the swelling around my wisdom tooth and he thought its a double problem,
1)one of the root canal treatment infection on the pre-molar and 2) the flaring up of gums around wisdom tooth. He prescribed me 500mg Amoxicillin plus a prescribed painkiller 30mg diydrocodeine. He asked me to continue taking the erythromycin 250mg too.I think both the incidents are related and not separate.
Initially the pain killer seemed to give some temporary relief in that the pain was reduced from the severe unbearable to just about bearable pain. but after 3 hours I was in agony again and the swelling was just the same and my whole right side jaw painful and slight swelling to face. I carried on with the antibiotics and painkillers throughout the night.
The pain is moderate and just about bearable but there is no sign of the swelling to gums reducing and my jaw is very painful. It’s now 3 rd day of antibiotics and 4 days since having the root canal treatment but theres no signs of the swelling to my gums reducing, jaw is painful. What can I do?
Has the root canal on pre-molar gone wrong? Were there more than 3 canals? or did he not clean them properly and infection (the black stuff he saw) not get fully removed and passed to surrounding gums. I had no pain or swelling before I had this root canal treatment.
The dental clinic is closed over weekend, opens on Monday with other dentists there as the one who did root canal will be on holiday. What are my options? I am in moderate pain and the swelling to gums and pain to jawline does not seem to be reducing.
the gum swelling is behind the premolar tooth that had root canal (RC), i.e the swelling is where the wisdom tooth is. There is no gum swelling on tooth that had RC treatment.
Just an update as it’s been a while since I posted the question: It appears the dentist who did the root canal went in too deep, this lead to facial swelling and immense pain. Saw the dentist (another one at the same clinic as mine was on holiday) he drilled into tooth, cleaned it out (all pus, blood) and filled with temporary filling. Immediately I felt and he saw the facial swelling come down and the tooth is no longer painful. In this case no amount of antibiotics/painkillers would have worked until the tooth was drained out. No probs with wisdom teeth at all. Thanks for any reply so far.-
ANSWER:
Sometimes, it is better to take a full course of antibiotic after the completion of root canal treatment. That is especially helpful if you had an infection prior to the root canal treatment.
In your case though the problem might be totally isolated from the offending tooth.
I think your problem will go away if you get the wisdom tooth in that area taken out.
The gum tissue flap continuously collects food particles.
The area gets severely inflamed and painful due to the food impaction.
Good luck !!

I am planning on going to the dentist but it’s Saturday and i haven’t made an appointment and i’m guessing this isn’t exactly an emergency. QUESTION:
Very swollen and sensitive gums? Treatment?
I take very good care of my teeth. Meaning brushing with sonicare two times a day, flossing, and using mouthwash twice a day. But then I got the flu, which turned into a gut infection that caused many painful canker sores, and thrush, a yeast infection in the mouth. My gums got very red and swollen and sensitive. Every time I brush, they bleed a lot. I can’t figure out how this happened, but what can I do to fix this?
They don’t normally bleed, just all of a sudden. I’ve never had a cavity or any gum problems before..-
ANSWER:
This is something we dentists like to call gum disease cause by bacteria gathering up round and in between teeth. Bleeding while brushing usually causes the gum to go thinner and that may cause tooth loss as there is no support to the teeth as the gums shrink rapidly but thankfully it can be treated easily with the right antibiotics. Your dentist will probably prescribe treatment for you.
Come disease is very common in people. After the treatment is complete I would suggest stronger mouth wash, toothpaste and floss. Also brush 2-3 times a day especially after meals for a short period of time just to stop the infection from coming back. Good luck!

QUESTION:
of swollen gums and root canal treatment?
my upper right gums on the 1st premolar is swollen due to infection. I’m on antibiotics and painkillers now. Seen the dentist a couple of times. Already went for the first treatment of rct. gums still swollen but it went down a bit. Can RCT really help? What I want to know is :
1. If my upper right gums swollen, why is it that I can feel some other gums spot is swollen. The feeling of gum swelling can be felt in some other spot? Sometimes on the left, sometimes on the bottom gums as well? Is it due to the nerves?
2. Can the gums at other spot get swollen as well because of the trauma on the infected gums?
3. How long will the gums really go back to normal? I have been flossing and gargling my mouth with warm salt water. Dentist told me that some gums will take months to go down, depending on how severe the infection is. But I’m not sure when as my gums has been swollen for 5 weeks now, but it has gone down a bit.
Its very uncomfortable for me as one day the gum may feel ok but the next day, it may not feel ok. I’m getting very stressed out because of this.Thank you.
-
ANSWER:
the upper right one is because of the infected tooth / dental abscess…the other areas are because you are overdue for professional cleaning….you have gingivitis that might have progressed to periodontal disease….

QUESTION:
Where can one get Mastic gum in India?
I have chronic infection of H pylori which keeps coming back after allopathy treatment. However, for nine months after the treatment i regain my perfect health. This time I want to try Mastic gum as I’ve heard its good.
Can someone tell me where to get that in India?
And how and when should I consume it, and in what quantities?
-
ANSWER:
Since nobody has answered yet, I’ll toss in my 2 cents.
You may be able to find it at your local healthfood store, herbalist, or drug store. If you can’t find it there, you can order it from any of a few good supplement companies that ship internationally (I can mention a few if you’d like).
As far as how to consume it, the bottle you get should have recommendations on it, but it’s normally taken a couple times throughout the day. Ours recommends 1,000 mg twice a day. It is very good for protecting the lining of the stomach and gastrointestinal tract, not to mention helping to ease stomach discomfort after eating. Good luck!

QUESTION:
Iv got a lump on my lower gum?
About 3 weeks ago I went for root canal treatment at the dentist, the dentist did his work and put a temporary filling on. after that it became infected and i had to take antibiotics. Since then the Antibiotics have worked and the infection has gone, but i am left with this painless lump on my gum below the selected tooth. I see the dentist this friday for the main filling, any ideas?-
ANSWER:
Please note that you cant expect the main filling ….the painless lump on your gum below the affected tooth needs to be fixed before you can get the main filling.Your dentist most probably will take out the temporary filling and again do “cleaning” of the root canal……….the lump in itself suggests that the tooth as yet is not in pink of health.
