Periodontal Disease Treatment

Gum Infections

Don’t underestimate the risks of a neglected gum infection. The hazards contain, getting heart disease to premature labor and from diabetes to osteoporosis, making the associated health complications of overlooking gum disease treatment wide. However, how can you be endangered of heart disease via gum infections?

The buildup of bacteria inside the mouth is the cause of gum infections, causing the gums surrounding the teeth to be inflamed and may even influence the root of the teeth in the bone. Execising efficient oral routine could prevent this conceivably serious condition. Meantime, once you’re receiving remedy against gum disease or periodontitis (the advanced state of gum disease), there may be a number of antibiotics for gum infections that can prove useful against the infection-causing bacteria.

Based on the research of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), gum disease causes the tissues around the tooth to be destroyed. The empty space made becomes a crevice for bacteria to multiply and thrive. To control the infection, the gums hence grow inflamed and bleed.

As the infection creates more swelling and as the space between the teeth and gum extends, periodontal bacteria could infiltrate the bloodstream once the gums bleed. Stored periodontal bacteria may make inflammation in the bloodstream and arteries, and blood clots that are the telltale of future heart issues.

and it is just in that one area..i still havent lost all my teeth
and its lose but not much

    • ANSWER:
What makes you think you have a gum infection? Is it around 1 spot or everywhere in your mouth? you are 13, so teeth may still be erupting which would cause a localized infection. Or perhaps you just need a professional cleaning. Highly unlikely a scale/rootplane procedure would need to be done on a 13 year old. Although I have seen a case where it was needed. In any case you should make an appointment to see your dentist and have it checked out. Hope you feel better.

  5. QUESTION:
Do gum infections give pain to the teeth & do the teeth or tooth need to be extracted cuz of it?
My dentist said i have a bit of gum infection after i recently had an extraction of an upper tooth, the tooth next to is hurting but ive taken antibiotics & is clearing up but my question is wud the infection return even if its a gum infection?

    • ANSWER:
      Hey,
Gum infections can give pain around the teeth (for example, when biting), but this sometimes only occurs in more severe cases.
As for whether it needs to be extracted – this really depends on how bad the infection is; if it’s not too severe and you have good oral hygiene you may be able to keep the tooth. However, this does also depend on the bone level around your affected tooth (in long-standing cases of gum disease, bone levels drop and can no longer hold the tooth in). So really, it depends on what the x-ray shows – ask your dentist to explain the x-ray to you.
If the infection is clearing up, this is generally a good sign. As with any kind of infection it can re-occur if given the opportunity. Perhaps you should ask your dentist about what caused the infection in the first place and how to avoid it in future.

  11. QUESTION:
Can tooth or gum infections impact the health of your entire body?
Hi there. I have had a dramatic plunge in my health recently and my doctor has diagnosed me on separate occasions with a sinus infection, a throat infection, and a chest infection. When he finally put me on antibiotics I noticed a few of my teeth went numb and I realised that it wasn’t that they were numb is was that they just weren’t hurting any more. While I got better very quickly, before the course of antibiotics ran out the symptoms all returned again. This time I was aware of my teeth hurting. Is it possible that this infection in my teeth could have caused all the other symptoms in my body?
Rather then going back to my doctor again and almost single handedly put his kids through private school with the charges, I’ve made an appointment with my dentist for next week. More money I know, but do you think it could really be whats wrong with me?

    • ANSWER:
Absolutely!! Studies have shown a link between heart disease, high blood pressure and cholestorol and gum disease and infection in the mouth. There have actually been reported cases of people who had periodontal disease getting gum treatment and they found that they didn’t have to be on blood pressure medication any longer. Look at it this way. If a person went to their doctor with scurvy, most doctors would treat the person for the symptoms that they were having, instead of treating the disease: giving them an orange. It is so simple.

  12. QUESTION:
Recurring panful gum infections, do I need to have my teeth extracted?

people tend to get infections around wisdom teeth because the dont come through fully and never will so they sit in the gum cant be cleaned and food gets in them very easily.
i was prescribed corsodyl and antibiotics they worked very well, if your doctor recommends it get the teeth out,
if mine happens again 1 or 2 more times will be getting mine out

Does a gum infection cause a lot of pain?
Just been prescribed antibiotics because ive been having really bad tooth ache, my dentist said its a gum infections.

Will the antibiotics stop the pain? Im on metronidazole tablets
Also could it cause bad earache?

    • ANSWER:
Gum infections can be incredibly painful. The antibiotics will help providing you take them as instructed and finish the course.

Rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution as this is brilliant for helping to get rid of the infection. It tastes vile but was recommended to me by a Dentist and really helped when I had a gum infection behind my wisdom tooth.

Try taking Ibuprofen if the pain is really bad but the antibiotics should work pretty quickly.

      Hope you feel better soon.

  15. QUESTION:
How do I stop a gum infection?
My gums by my left lower wisdom tooth have been really tender since this morning. I’ve already had two wisdom teeth removed because they were impacted and causing gum infections which were excruciatingly painful. Are there any good ways to stop it in it’s tracks before it becomes a full blown infection?

Something hard and pointy came out of my gums early and it really hurt but they’ve been getting better since so it might go away on it’s own, i just don’t want to take the chance.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
Best advice is to go and see your dentist as quickly as possible. An infection like that can spread to other parts of the body, and can be dangerous if left.

When I had my severely impacted wisdom teeth extracted I used salt mixed with baking soda 50/50 and added a splash of hydrogen peroxide. I used a syringe the oral surgeon gave me, or you can put the mixture in a dental irrigator. This mixture was very effective at cleansing the mouth and killing the bacteria. However, use this as temporary relief until you see a professional!

A white patch can be a lot of things. But my hunch is he has oral thrush.

  20. QUESTION:
Are gum infections and periodontal disease related to other health problems in the body?
One time I was listening to a radio show on how to increase how long you live. One tip they had was to floss on a regular basis. They said that when people get infections often throughout their body, the gums are the first to go. I thought to myself, “Correlation doesn’t prove causation. Was it the gums that caused infections throughout the body? Or was it these people had an underlying infection already there that first showed up in the gums? Or is it that people with weaker immune systems who are going to get infections else where anyway, often also get gum diseases?” Then later on, or recently, I completed an online health questionnaire and it asked me how often I floss my teeth. I said once every few months and the results of the test basically said, “Naughty naughty! There may be some evidence that periodontal disease is related to health problems that arise in other parts of the body.”
So I was wondering if periodontal disease is really related to other health problems? And if so, is there any evidence that it’s the gum/periodontal disease that is actually causing the health problems elsewhere? I brush my teeth using an electric toothbrush that both rotates and pulsates ( toothbrush) regularly, but don’t don’t floss so often since I have a bridge and it takes a long time.

  21. QUESTION:
Can you get myeloma from repeated infections (e.g tooth/gum infections)?
I know doctors do not know the exact cause of single or multiple myeloma, but I was wondering if one can get the disease from having bad teeth and gums from years of teeth infections and gum infections (abnormal cell growth due to repeated infection in the same area that damages the cells)? My mother, who worked very hard for us, did not have much money or time left to take care of herself in the right way. She had an infection in her tooth and had it taken out after a doctor noticed in an x ray that their was a lesion in her mouth that could “break her jaw” later, and the doctors discovered more plasma cells than usual. It is only at a single site, but I was wondering if a person were to have years to serious infections, if this could cause abnormal cell growth and lead to myeloma?

    • ANSWER:
I think it’s a combination of factors connected with myeloma or any other disease for that matter.

  22. QUESTION:
I am sick to death of these gum infections…?
For the last 4 years I have been getting nasty gum infections. This is due to my wisdom teeth coming through and I’m fed up of the pain all the time. I brush 3 times a day and use mouthwash and all my teeth and gums are very healthy. My dentist just says the teeth are nearly through now and it should stop soon. I keep missing time off college and the pain is horrible. I use salt water as soon as I feel it starting but sometimes it dosen’t help much. I saw a specialist at the hospital to have them out but he was reluctant to because they are almost through. Anyone any tips?

    • ANSWER:
firstly i know how you feel-the pain can be UNBEARABLE at times!!!! i saw a different dentist (a newly qualified one) and he immediately referred me to the dental hospital to get all the little devils pulled out! it doesn’t matter if they are not all through (my crappy dentist told me the same as yours!) i had 2 partly through and 2 impacted x

How does a dentist treat a gum infection?
I have a really bad gum infection on a wisdom tooth. My teeth are fine and healthy as I see a dentist every six months so I think it’s just from a bit of food stuck in there rather than an underlying problem.

Other than antibiotics, what will the dentist do? Do they lance the gum or anything first?
Edit: he won’t pull them out as he says they’re fine, just a little crowded.

What does a gum infection from surgery look like?
I just had a tooth exposed 3 days ago and they placed a bracket on it. Since the surgery my swelling is getting worse and my mouth tastes terrible! The gum is all white/grey colored and puffed up so I am worried it may be infected. What are signs of infection?
also…reason im not calling the surgeon is cause hes not there :( hes on vacation for a week! Anything I can do at home?

    • ANSWER:
Generally an infection would present itself as very red and swollen and potentially some oozing. The bad taste in your mouth is not uncommon and you can help both inflammation and taste with some gentle salt water rinsing. If you are still in doubt call the oral surgeon back, they should have someone covering for them (likely another dental practice) and they should check you out. Hope that helps!

How did my toddler get a gum infection?
My toddler of 21 mths has a very bad gum infection along with a fever. 26. QUESTION:
    Gum Infections Identification pleasee!?
What looks like a Canker sore but is on the inside of the gum? Is it an infection? it is very painful.. do you guys have any idea what it could be? I recently just got crown lengthening surgery.

    • ANSWER:
Use Bonjella. It stings at first, but I’m used to it now. However, the Bonjella simply numbs it, and doesn’t really help it heal, unless you out something on it while it isn’t hurting.

Another thing that NO ONE has suggested so far is pop a garlic capsule on it. This idea doesn’t hurt at all; bite a hole in one end and squeeze the liquid on the ulcer. This will make it stop hurting by the end of the day, if you apply it regally. Then, if you don’t mind the taste of it, put the outer capsule on the ulcer, and wait for it to dissolve. DON’T try to move it after you’ve placed it on, as it sticks to your ulcer and HURTS LIKE CRAZY!!! If you don’t have garlic capsules handy, use normal garlic, just crush it and place it on your ulcer.

You can also rinse your mouth out with mouth wash; not Listerine, that would KILL, however, if you numbed your ulcer with Bonjella first, it may not hurt and would kill the germs. Another idea is, which is also the most common, easiest and cheapest way of clearing ulcers, is to use salt. Either apply salt straight to your ulcer with your finger, or rinse your mouth out with salty water. Not the nicest tasting way, but it does its job!

However, even if you don’t treat them, they will eventually go away.

Oh, and DONT eat honey or suger; it’ll make it worse. :)

I have a small gum infection under my tooth, I brush them regular and don’t eat a lot of lollies. I haven’t been to a dentist yet but is there anything I can get or do that will help it? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Sure, generally, bacteria of the mouth are opportunist’s. Meaning, if certain opportunities are present they germinate and become active. Most oral bacteria are not acidic philes; meaning, they can not live in acidic (sour) habitats. With that said, Apple Cider Vinegar (organic is best) is very acidic, it will be a great tool to kill said bacteria. The best way to do this. Take a tablespoonful of apple cider vinegar and rinse it in your mouth SLOWLY for about 20 seconds and spit or swallow. Apple cider vinegar is beneficial to the body also. Hope that helps

  36. QUESTION:
How come my dentist said i got a gum infection & no tooth abccess without taking an X-Ray?
Can the dentist’s really know by looking inside the mouth whether you have an infection or not or whatver, my dentist did not take a X-Ray or anything because last time i had an X-Ray was few weeks before extracted of my infected tooth, but she just looked inside my mouth and said its a bit of gum infection but no tooth abccess and was quite confident about it, is it true they know these things without an X-Ray or is it neglect? thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Some infections are obvious when the dentist looks in your mouth, particularly when there is swelling, inflammation or oozing. At other times the patients symptoms may suggest infection when there is nothing to see. In those cases an x-ray can help with diagnosis.
It isn’t neglectful not to perform an x-ray if your dentist is confident that she can see obvious infection. If however you are not convinced you have a problem and feel she is wrong, it may be worth going back to her and requesting an x-ray just to put your mind at rest.

How do you tell if its a toothache or a gum infection??
I have an OUTRAGEOUS pain in my tooth. Trying to go to dentist but I don’t have insurance, regardless, I was told by a dentist if it is a gum infection this is something you see a doctor for, not a dentist. So how do you tell if it is a toothache or a gum infection cause I cant take the pain its unbearable!!

    Thanks!!

    • ANSWER:
Gum infections that are related to malnutrition eg vitamin C deficieny or due to systemic disease is the only type not really relevant to dentist, controlled more by a doctors prescription! (but still diagnosed by a dentist!)
But i find a dentist telling u that really weired….!!!! are you sure he is qualified?
any gum disease is most often than not purely the dentists concern! have you heard of gum inflammation where u have to go to the dentist for cleaning etc?
regardless of whether it is from the tooth or the gums u do have to go for dental treatment.
Most common situation is when the pain is so severe u cant sleep, do ur routine work etc then its defintely a tooth with pulpal involvement (meaning it needs root canal).
i wish i can keep enumerating dental diseases for u to find out what u have, unfortunately i cant we’d run out of space. if u can be more specific bout the pain, onset, aggravating factors, any medical conditiions? i can be of more help

  41. QUESTION:
Are there any pain relief remedies for a small gum infection while I wait for my dentist appointment?
I suspect I’m suffering from pericoronitis (small, painful gum infection caused by being stubborn and not having my wisdom teeth pulled sooner). I have a dentist appointment but its a ways off and the pain is moderate.
Symptoms include: Sharp pain behind and around my bottom left wisdom tooth, pain opening jaw, pain swallowing, aching lower left jaw, and bad breath. I’m getting some relief with 800mg of Motrin 3 times a day with meals but its starting to wear off quicker and I’m afraid to take any more. I’ve pushed on the tooth and it doesn’t hurt, so I’m pretty sure its my gums. I think.

    • ANSWER:
It sounds like you are doing the right thing for the problem so far. As long as you are otherwise healthy, you can take 800mg ibuprofen every 6 hours for a week or so. If this stops working, don’t take more. Take 400mg ibuprofen and 1000mg Tylenol (2 extra strength tabs). Rinse the area with warm water and salt (1 teaspoon salt in 8-12 ounces warm water) once every hour to get some relief and to kill some bacteria in the area. Unfortunately, even when you see your dentist, he may not be able to take it out for you that day. Very often, you may need to wait to have the actual extractions done or be sent to an oral surgeon to have the tooth extracted. Also, if you have other wisdom teeth, you may want to go to sleep to have all of them removed at once so that this doesn’t happen again. I hope this helps.
Lastly, do NOT dissolve anything taken by mouth against your soft tissues of your mouth. Aspirin as acetylsalicylic ACID and will BURN YOU if you let it dissolve in your mouth, creating a whole host of other problems. I hope you feel better soon.

  43. QUESTION:
Question about braces and gum infections?
I got braces about 8 months ago. My teeth are fairly straight I only need them to correct a few things. I’ll be getting them off here in a few more months. I noticed about a month ago my top gums were starting to swell and come down over my brackets. I talked to my dentist and he told me the best thing to do is just continue to brush my teeth and my gums well.
So I have been. I brush my teeth and gums after each meal I have. I floss and do all the other stuff you’re suppose to do and things only got a little better. About a week ago I started noticing my bottom gums were receding and some of the skin was even starting to come off of both the top and bottom gums.
Has this happened to anyone else? What did you do about it? Could it be possible that I have some sort of infection or could this problem create even bigger problems for me once my braces are off?
I’m really worried this is going to cause scarring on my teeth or I’ll have some problem down the road.
    Any help is appreciated!

  45. QUESTION:
How do I care for a tooth/gum infection?
My wisdom teeth have been gone for 6 years now. The tooth on the bottom left side in the far back was getting crowned 2 years ago- the dentist royally screwed up, so I never went back to him & now I no longer have insurance & my medicaid doesn’t cover dental. Is there anyway I can get the little remaining part of this tooth removed? I know I’ll need antibiotics first to get rid of the infection in my gums. Can anyone help or give me some helpful advice? Thank you

    • ANSWER:
You really need a dentist for this… My fiance had a similar situation, complete with no insurance. Try looking for a docter that takes Care Credit. It’s a credit card for this kind of situation. http://www.carecredit.com/ If you can’t qualify due to bad/no credit… I suggest either getting a loan or having a family member apply & then get permission to use it (that’s what we did)

Infection is a big deal in that area. It’s dangerous & you do need antibiotics.

However, I know a trick that MIGHT be able to help a little. Get some sea salt (not table salt) & mix about 1 teaspoon into 6-8 oz of really warm water. Let is soak into the infected area. Swish it around in your mouth. Sea salt is a natural antiseptic & can help bring the infection out. It tastes horrible…but it helps. Do this several times a day & each time after you eat.

If you have a heat pack, hold it to your face for about 10 minutes or so when every you can throughout the day.

Also, for the pain (it has to hurt)…invest in some clove oil. It is far superior to anything else on the market for tooth aches. Take an anti-inflammatory (like ibuprofen) for the swelling.

      I hope that helps.

Edit: P.S. Try looking for an Urgent Care clinic. They typically run about .00 for a visit & can prescribe you antibiotics for this kind of situation. If you’re luckier than me & can take penicillin; you should be able to get that from the Walmart pharmacy for about .00

  47. QUESTION:
Can someone die of a severe gum infection?
I have a friend who wears dentures, she’s only 38, just died from a severe gum infection that caused her face to swell up so bad that her eyes were closed shut because of the swelling. She did get a antibiotics but the next day her dad found her dead in her bed.?

    • ANSWER:
First let me say that I am sorry for your loss.

Yes it is possible. I lost a friend years ago from a tooth infection. The health of our mouths is very important because it is directly connected to the brain and heart. My friend died when his tooth infection spread to his heart. This is how most people in ancient times died and why they died so young. Lack of dental care and advanced technology, and lack of knowledge.

      Take care of your teeth.

  48. QUESTION:
