Gum disease is serious business. Its symptoms are usually subtle that you don’t even realize the damage that is being done literally right under your nose. Rather than feeling outright pain, you may experience gnawing, itching, or burning sensation. You may notice a little bleeding when you brush or floss your teeth. It may be annoying , but it certainly doesn’t seem like anything to worry about. The during a routine checkup, your dental hygienist informs you that your gums have receded so much that one of your teeth has become wobbly. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to restore your gum health.
1.Stop Smoking
If the threat of lung cancer and heart disease has not persuaded you to can the cigs, then sore gums probably won’t do the trick either. Just know that smoking not on;y aggravates gum disease, it can cause it in the first place. There is such a thing as nicotine stomatitis. It is an inflammation of the soft tissue of the mouth that comes from nicotine irritation.
2.Avoid Aspirin
Your friends mean well when they tell you to put aspirin on your sore gums. But don’t listen to this old wives’ tale. Never put aspirin directly on your gums. Yes, it might provide some temporary relief. But aspirin is a highly caustic chemical, and it is irritating to the gum tissue. It could cause a fairly serious acid burn.
3.Be Gentle
While keeping your mouth cleanis critical, you will want to proceed gingerly when you have sore gums. Patients with gum problems tend to get more vigorous with their brushing. They think that they can brush the problem away. But they often end up inadvertently causing abrasions and ulcerations. Avoid aggressive brushing. Make sure that you use a soft toothbrush. Plaque is a soft material and can be removed better with a soft brush than a hard one.
4.Try tea bag
If your gums are bleeding, tea can make it stop. Just place a wet tea bag on the area that is bleeding. The tannic acid will help the blood clot.
5.Give Up Brushing Temporarily
If your gum tissue appears red or raw, it is recommended to forgo brushing that area for the time being so that it has a chance to heal. Brushing will irritate the gum even more. Instead of brushing, dip a cotton swap in 3 percent hydrogen peroxide and dab the sore spot. Hydrogen peroxide is a cleansing agent. If you use it for five to seven days, it will help clean the area and allow the gum to heal without toothbrush abrasion. You can brush the biting surface of the back teeth directly. Just make sure that the brush doesn’t touch the gum line.
6.Try Rinse
It is recommended to use a rinse with anti-plaque properties. It helps to reduce the amount of plaque mass in your mouth at any one time. Your best bet is a rinse that contains chlorhexidine. Since such products are only available by prescription, you should ask your dentist whether one would be right for you. Some over-the-counter rinses such as Listerine has been shown to be effective in preventing plaque buildup, but they don’t work as well as those with chlorhexidine.
7.Consume Carefully
If you have a sore or an ulcer on your gums, avoid eating anything that can irritate the tissue. Stay away from spicy and acidic foods and drinks. This includes tomato juice and even colas. They have pHs in the range of five, which is acidic. What about orange juice? Make sure you dilute it with water. This reduces the acidic concentration, so the juice won’t burn when you drink it.

QUESTION:
Whats an at home remedy for tooth and gum pain?
What has worked for you to relieve tooth and gum pain?-
ANSWER:
If you have sensitive teeth (sensitivity to hot and cold), use sensodyne.
If it’s sensitivity to sweets, or when chewing, then you probably have a cavity, so you’ll need to see a dentist.
If it’s your gums that are sensitive, rinse with salt water, brush 2x daily and floss nightly. But if it’s a throbbing, wake-you-up-at-3am kind of pain, see a dentist. It’s probably an abscess.

QUESTION:
Is gum pain normal after a temporary crown?
My back bottom right molar had a temporary crown put on. Behind the tooth and on the inside gum hurts pretty badly whenever I touch it . It has been three days. I’m just wondering if this is normal since the dentist didn’t say anything about pain and this is my first crown.-
ANSWER:
Yes it is normal to have pain around your gums with a temporary crown. Our gums are sensitive to the material used to make the tempory, some people are more sensitive to it than others. Warm salt water rinses will help your gums to heal or at least feel some comfort before the actual crown is placed. Unfortunately the temporary has to stay on untill your crown is ready because your gums are being retracted with this temporary so your crown will fit almost perfect with small minor adjustments.

is it normal to have tooth and gum pain after you deliver?
My daughter is now 2 weeks and i have had this mouth pain in my teeth and gums, also im breastfeeding and the last few days she has been on the breast non stop, it seems like i have nothing left in them cause their not full and firm like before, now i know its cuase she’s feeding alot but maybe i’m just not able to produce enough. I think you should see a dentist…it could have absolutely nothing to do with breastfeeding and everything to do with an infection in your gums. If you wait too long if it is an infection, it can get into your blood and cause all sorts of problems. Don’t wait on this, get in as soon as possible.

QUESTION:
How do i stop the gum pain?
When i brush my theeth my gums hurt really really bad,and when im rinseing.I know its bad but i skip days of brushing. How can i stop the pain?-
ANSWER:
Sounds like you need a dental cleaning. If you have not had a cleaning recently, you may have buildup beneath the the gumlines causing gum inflammation. This hard buildup can only be removed with a cleaning. However, it could be too much bacteria causing the buildup. Brush 2 times a day for at least 2 minutes. Extra soft or soft toothbrush only w/ gentle circles, no scrubbing or pressing hard. Floss. Flossing daily helps cut down on the inflammation. This may be difficult to do now. So, rinse with hydrogen peroxide at bedtime. Swish, spit, do not rinse/eat/drink just go to bed. This will help ease some of the inflammation so you can help take better care of them. If you can’t stand the peroxide use a different mouthwash of your choice, but peroxide works best.

new root canal, waiting perm. crown. got alot of gum pain, put on meds for possible infection. still hurts, what can it be?-
ANSWER:
How long ago was the root canal done? They can be sore for a week or two but then should start to feel much better. When you go back to have the permanent crown cemented to place, I would not have it done unless the pain is much improved. If the root canal is not working, by placing a crown on it will not improve the situation. Hope things get better.

How to relieve gum pain from Ecstasy?

ANSWER:
Your going to have to wait it out. Not much can take away mouth pains but your mouth will heal faster than any other part of your body. Your mouth and jaw are going to be sore regardless of what you do when you take E, but I found that chewing on a piece of gum every once in a while is the best solution.

QUESTION:
extreme gum pain due to vitamin c deficiency?
for awhile i had extreme gum pain. it turns out i was vitamin c deficient (my brushing/flossing is very good). so i started to eat oranges and take vitamin c supplements. the pain went away completely within a week. but recently it started up again as i began to eat apples. is it too early to eat such hard foods? does any other vitamin deficiency cause gum pain? what could be the problem now?-
ANSWER:
It could just be that your gums are still weakened from being Vitamin C deficient and they just need time to heal and regain their natural strength. Since you do brush and floss regularly gingivitis is probably not the cause, so I would simply wait and see if the situation improves as you continue to take Vitamin C. If it does continue to be an issue you may want to see a dentist again, it could be that your body is not processing the supplements well enough or that you have some other gum issues, but likely things should return to normal soon.

Is it normal to have gum and jaw pain after having a filling done?
I had the very last tooth on the bottom right side of my mouth filled from a cavity and after the numbing has worn off I’m still having pain in my left side jaw by the joint. And also having pain in the gum area behind my last tooth. Where my wisdom tooth should but, I don’t have wisdom teeth because I had them pulled. Any advice?
Thank you!-

I feel you girl!! I was just at the dentist today getting a filling. I hate it!!!!!!! It’s normal..if they were a bit rough with you… I’m sure the pain will subside after a few days. They may have knicked your gums…depending on what treatment they used to do the filling and also which surface of the tooth had the cavity. QUESTION:
How can i relieve the pain in my gum around my wisdom tooth?
Been to dentist and have an infection in my gum. was prescribed amoxicilin and co-codomal for pain relief but over night the pain is unbearable and only eases after being awake a while. my gum seems to go hard around the tooth when I am asleep. The extra strength pain killers appear useless. sorry if spelling mistakes etc not slept for 4 nights now!-
ANSWER:
It takes a while for the infection to subside. If you take pain meds on a regular schedule, the pain should begin to subside. It’s typical for the pain to be more severe at night.
There are topical OTC things like Anbesol that might give temporary relief. Listerine rinse and warm salt water rinses can be effective too.
Call your dentist if you are not getting better.

QUESTION:
what could be a gum pain a symptom of?
my sister’s whole gum has suddenly became painful. She’s is having a cold though, but could this be associated with the cold?-
ANSWER:
Trigger points. Check it out, this is pretty interesting: http://www.myofascialtherapy.org/symptomcheck/sc_headneck.htmlBeing sick often makes people’s muscles tight, which can set off trigger points and make seemingly random areas of their body hurt. If she has healthy gums and this started suddenly, I’d be willing to bet that it’s due to trigger points.
It may be possible that a sinus infection is causing it, too. Tell her to tip her head upside down. If it hurts, she probably has a sinus infection.
(btw, I’ve read that trigger points can cause sinus congestion/pain, but I don’t know how accurate that is.)

How do I help my severe gum/tooth pain until dentist opens tomorrow! Pain medicine isn’t kicking in…please!-

Orajel. They don’t kid around when they say it works. Your whole mouth will go numb, it will feel really wierd, but it works. You might have to reapply every 10 minutes or so, though. Your mouth gets rid of it fast because of saliva. To get through the night, take tylenol PM. It will at least knock you out, if not reduce the pain a bit. Good luck

QUESTION:
Gum pain in back of mouth, where wisdom teeth were?
In the back of my mouth my gum on one side is tender, slightly swollen, and painful. I had my wisdom teeth removed about 5 years ago so I don’t think that’s it. But it kind of feels like it did when they were first coming in and breaking the surface. Can you have two sets of wisdom teeth?? What else could it be?-
ANSWER:
Do you remember whether or not the orthodontist had any problem removing the teeth? Sometimes during surgery they have a problem removing the tooth and will break it for easier removal (this happened when I had my wisdom teeth out) which can result in a little sliver of the tooth being stuck in there (it eventually works its way to the surface), that might be the cause. It could also be a gum infection. Do you have any pain any where else in your mouth? Your jaw? Teeth? In any case, I’d recommend going to see your dentist, they can take a good look in your mouth and if needed, take X-rays, if it is infact an infection, they will give you antibiotics.
And for my personal opinion, I don’t think you can have two sets of wisdom teeth, but… stranger things have happened lol.Best of luck!

QUESTION:
How do you stop the pressure pain from airplanes when gum just makes it worse?
When i go in airplanes, i get that pressure feeling im sure everyone gets, but mine is not just pressure, i feel a sharp pain inside my ear, at times its just one ear at a time. How do i prevent this? I’ve tried gum but it makes it hurt more.-
ANSWER:
You yawn and chew gum on the way up, but you perform a “Valsalva Maneuver” on the way down to equalize your ear pressure. It takes practice, but once you learn how to do it, you’ll never have ear pain again when coming down in an airplane.http://www.healthcentral.com/encyclopedia/408/687/Ear_Discomfort_and_Airplane_Travel.html

QUESTION:
Why does my stomach get piercing pain when I chew gum?
Whenever I chew gum, usually 5 gum, my stomach hurts with a piercing pain. Last time it happened was in school and it hurt sooooooo bad that I thought my stomach was going to rip or something lol. Can anyone tell me why this is? And does anyone else get this when they chew gum?-
ANSWER:
i don’t really get piercing pain, but i sometimes feel like throwing up. The thing is that when you chew anything, just the jaw movement makes your digestive system prepare itself to receive food, so it prepares all the enzymes needed as well as the HCl in the stomach. This pain could be due to all this happening to an empty stomach.
Could you just elaborate on whether or not you had anything to eat before this happened, because if you didn’t, then you probably just needed to eat first before you chew gum, and if not, then it might be an ulcer, worst case, really. but i don;t think it;s that serious..it might not even have anything to do with the gum if it happened once.

Now my gums are swollen and side of my left cheek is also swollen.
The side of my face looks like a balloon and i’m in pain when i eat something.

You could use Advil or Excedrin to relieve the pain, but I strongly suggest that you see a dentist. You might need an antibiotic for the swelling. Although I’ve been on painkillers they do not help and it really hurts to eat. Is there anything I can do to get rid of this excruciating pain?PS, don’t tell me to not do drugs as that means you are probably living a boring life anyway and I only ever do them at the very odd party or so, not every day. So shut up.

Hi, I have wisdom teeth growing in on the lower.I have the biggest phobia of needles and would rather be fully sedated then have a needle stuck into my gums.
Is it possible to be fully sedated and have this procedure done?

ANSWER:
Totally understand the needle thing! I had all four out at once and one was impacted! They did sedate me although besides some killer downers they gave me a shot in the arm. Good Luck!

QUESTION:
Gum pain after wisdom tooth extracted 2wks later?
I had 1 of my wisdom teeth removed on May22. The first 2 days after the surgery were somewhat unbearable but no so much in the sense of pain but rather with the discomfort from the pain meds. I had not really experienced any problems until early last week (almost 2 weeks after the surgery). I have started to experience pain around my gums (where the extractions were done) whenever I eat. This happens regardless of whether my meals are cold, hot, warm, room temp. Is this something that is normal? However, I thought this was something that could occur a couple of days after surgery not weeks after. Is there something I can do. On Advil for the past 2 weeks and apprehensive continuing for another week.Any advise would be appreciated.
Thank You.-
ANSWER:
2 weeks after your surgery you should have almost healed up, The best advice would be to go and see your dentist for a follow up…the gum would still be tender so if you are chewing food in that area maybe you need to avoid it for the time being.
