   What is the best way to get rid of a canker/ulcer on your gum.?
   I have a very painful canker/ulcer that is on the gum of my bottom row teeth. I have had it for just under a week. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good remedy to get rid of it. One that is fast acting and is cheap. Thank-you to everyone who offers advice.

     salty water.

     add lots of salt to warm water. Make it saltier than ocean water and rinse your mouth with it and spit.

     do this for a few days and the sore will go away.

   Is a gum ulcer after root canal normal?
   My dentist and endodontist say this is normal. It is sore and just to the outside of the tooth I had root canal done to recently. Do you think this is normal. Has anyone had any experience with this type of thing?

     usally no, only when it is infected.

   Charlie, my cat seems to have an ulcer on his gum, should i take him to the vet or just keep an eye on it?
   He’s eating and drinking fine but i think it might be a little infected as i think there is puss, however when i try to look he goes a bit mental but he is often like this. He’s fine in himself no changes in behaviour or anything. His teeth are also really weird, theyre all chipped and knocked about, and some of the teeny little cute ones they have at the front and wonky and rooted higher up the gum, he’s always been like that tho. So shall i book him an appointment or is it just like when get an ulcer, will it heal itself?

     You should take him to the vet.

     When my cat had an absess in his mouth his tooth needed to be extracted or infection would have eventually killed him. Do not wait on this, it could become serious in a short amount of time.

     Redness around the gums is a sure sign of gingivitis. Perhaps you might ask the vet to scale his teeth while he’s at it.

   I had a a ulcer against my check and gum and it might turned into cancer is that what it is?
   i got the first half of a root canal done and then after the pain went away an ulcer appeared between my cheek and gum. it hurt at first just like any ulcer. but then it seemed to break open. it looks raw and is kind of impressed into my cheek. its white and hurts constantly. is this just an ordinary ulcer waiting to go away or can this be the begining of mouth cancer.

     it need not be cancer.
     just it may be an infection which can be cured by medication by orthodontist/dentist. No apprehensions about mouth cancer, please.

   How did I get an ulcer? WHy is it connected to my wisdom toogh gum?
   I have never got an ulcer before
   I got an one ulcer where my wisdom teeth is growing, it’s kinda connected to the gum of the wisdom teeth and it is really painful. I use bonjela mum gave it to me for to use.

     When you have a tooth erupting-coming into the mouth a flap of gum covers part of the tooth this is called the operculum. This operculum can become swollen and ulcerated if food gets stuck under it or there is plaque around it because it can be difficult to clean.

     Warm salt mouthwashes can help clear up the ulceration but sometimes you may need to see a dentist to help clean out the area-wash it out and you may need antibiotics to clear up the infection.

   How to treat ‘ulcer like’ sore on inside of gum?

     Ulcers are many a type. Let us say you hurt your gum and it is not healing for reasons beyond your control and the wound turns black,it means it is infected and you have to visit the dentist .
     If it is a simple ulcer causes due to some physical changes in your body temperature and lack of vitamins ,they could be treated at home by using salt .Put salt on the ulcer and it will burn a bit .but will positively heal it with in 72 hours. You could also gargle with salt water ,but it would take 7 to 10 days to heal. You should also take vitamin tablets or eat citrus fruits to over come deficiency of the body.

   Painful gum ulcer and wisdom teeth HELP.?
   so, i have a gum ulcer and its so painful to close my mouth properly to eat so I’m just not eating right now :/ ..
   I’ve used bonjela ( the 16+ one- I’m 18) but that really didn’t do a thing but make it a bit numb for a minute then it just stung. Also my jaw feels rather tight and just uncomfortable , is that related to the gum ulcer even though it’s under my top lip and not near my jaw? Also just as a side thing, i think my wisdom teeth are coming through too because the back of my mouth is a bit tender and i can just see two white tips of teeth witch I’m sure weren’t there before, so could those account for my jaw pain too? even though i don’t really feel pain near my ‘wisdom teeth unless touch them?

      yes it’s definatley possible, any kind of trauma (cut gums with toothbrush or hard food etc) The key is to keep the area clean and do warm salt water rinses to help heal the tissue. Also when you have on of these sores if the area swells up chances are youre going to bite it or injure it again in some way so just be cautious and eat slowly til it heals , if the problem persists go see your dentist to make sure your wisdom teeth are not coming in.

    Help! mouth ulcer/gum pains !?
    Ok so the past 3 months ive been getting alot of ulcers am 16 and my mouth heaves with about 5 ulcers at a time. Ive tried mouthwashes, salt, nothing, tablets, changing toothpaste or toothbrush and even stopped drinking out of plastic because we think this is how i am getting them.
    I not long ago went to the doctors about them and they gave me these pellets to take and leave on the ulcer to disslove, they did work a little but not completely. I dont have ulcers at the moment but i do have pains on my gums where my teeth grow in and i have just brushed my teeth and i just spat out alot of blood! whats going on!. My mam thinks am brushing to hard, but to be fair i brush my teeth twice a day 4 atleast 4 minutes because I am trying to get white teeth without cheating. But a dont no what am doing, Do u think i should go to the doctors? or what do u suggest?

    • ANSWER:
      The most common type of mouth ulcers are called ‘apthous’ ulcers. They are probably viral. (though no virus has been identified.)This means they should not be given antibiotics as there have no effect. There behaviour is similar to cold sores, in that they are recurrent, come out when we are run down and we never seem to develop immunity. Here the similarity ends, because unlike herpetic cold sores there is no treatment.

      Each ulcer lasts about 10 days, but you can get further crops erupting, so each episode may last longer than that.

      Ice,ice cream and cold soft items, become the easiest things to eat. Teething gels sometimes help. There is now only one prescription drugs for apthous ulcers, Corlan Pellets. It is a steroid and only reduces the nipping a bit and does not hasten resolution.

      im prone to mouth ulcers, and have tried, what it seems, every treatment on the planet!

      Bonjela doesnt work! and salt water doesnt work!

      i found these weird cotton bud like treatment sticks, infact, they are cotton buds, with pinkish liquid inside, you break the sticks, and hold it onto the mouth ulcer for a couple of seconds. it does sting, but once you take it off, it forms a clear barrier over the ulcer, that actually stays on!

      I cant remember the make of what i use, but its pretty expensive,

      ironic, i’ve noticed bonjela have bought out a new product that does exactly the same, i think its called Bonjela Once.

    Gum ulcer and something weird inside tooth?
    Around 3 years ago I managed to accidentally crack my lower left first molar by eating something very hard, since then it has given me a bit of pain but in the last 2 weeks I have realised that the gum right next to the tooth is a little swollen, and when I press it yellow puss comes out. Another thing I am concerned about with this tooth is that in the last few weeks – probably 4 or 5 weeks, I have realised some sort of gum-like pink thing inside the tooth that just appeared there out of no where. I have tried to take it out but it seems attached inside the tooth, and everytime I try to remove it, it just bleeds. Before this thing appeared there, I remember I could feel inside the tooth with my tongue and there was nothing there but the dentin exposed (I’m not sure if it was the dentin, but it was a sort of light brown colour). To be honest, and I really must be honest, I rarely brush my teeth. Although they look white and healthy. I have started to brush them everyday now since the last month though. I am very concerned about what these symptoms are, and it’s beginning to dawn on me that I might have something life-threatening. I really must know what’s happening to my tooth from experienced people on Yahoo Answers so that I can get to a dentist and get it treated immediately.

      You need to go to a dentist as soon as you can. It could be gums disease, gingivitus, an infection, many things. You could die from this if it is an infection by the way so get to your dentist and be honest with him.

      haha sorry bro. what i meant is that if it is infected you could become sick and possibly die. idk if you know this but actually any infection from bacteria in the body can cause the same thing.

      just go to the dentist man, it will be fine. and try to brush at least once a day, best to do it in the morning.

    Bad ulcer at the bottom of the left side of my gum. please help?
    I had it for about 2 days and i don’t want to put the stress on my parents to take me to the dentist. im 13 and i don’t know what to do about it. i cant brush it or even eat on that side of my mouth. Any advice how to get it away?

      You can’t get an ulcer on your gum, stupid. Ulcers are only in the stomach.

    Please answer regarding ulcer on gum after root canal??
    The dentist and endo who did the root canal seem to think this is normal..I have read that it can indicate and infection. Does anyone know what this is? Is it really normal to appear right on the gum just next to the recently root canaled tooth? Any dental professionals please!!
    a better description of the lesion is a flat or even slightly inverted round sore spot. It is not raised and I cannot express any fluid from it.

      What does the lesion look like? Where is it located? Is it like a canker sore or is it more like a pimple?

      A canker sore or something that looks like a white/yellow flat ulcer is most likely just trauma from being worked on.

      Anything that resembles a pimple/whitehead/raised blister/blood blister is a sign of infection. If you can press on the area and express fluid and/or blood you need to call the endodontist and throw out big words like “draining parulis”. This is an area of infection that may resolve on its on but would be better addressed by the endodontist.

18. QUESTION:
    Is it normal to get Ulcer on gum after trauma?
    My daughter got excited the other day when we were playing peekaboo with the duvet.She headbutted my bottom lip & gum which split my lip open & I also developed a nasty Ulcer just under my tooth on the gum. I’ve rinsed with salt water & applied Bonjela but it seems to be hanging round and is really painful.

      It will take a while to go down – 5 to 14 days, but if it persists for longer than three weeks you need to see a doctor. Don’t eat spicy or food with a hot temperature until it heals. Stay away from citrus fruits and all acidic foods as they will sting. Bonjela is the best you can do without a prescription. What you are doing right now is great. Good luck

    11 year old with gum ulcer for over 6 months now. Dentist and pediatrician not sure what it is.?
    It is very painful for him and not healing, what could it be? Also saw a periodontist who had no clue and said not to worry. His diet lacks fresh fruits and veg’s due to many food intolerances, could this be diet related from lack of vitamins or nutrients? Or should I be seeking info. from someone else?     I’m here asking on behalf of my friend. She just called me up telling me she’s very worried of having HIV. See, she is in college doing culinary arts. She was assigned a group for their practical class and everytime after their class is over, they will share the food thy cook in class (as in eating it together). So last week all four of them had burned their mouths when eating their chicken because it was too hot and they all had ulcers/swollen gums. They finished the food anyway. A few hours ago one of the girls from her group called my friend up telling her she has HIV. So now what I’m asking is, is it possible for a person with an ulcer to get HIV from a person who also has ulcer?

    P.s I’m really serious with this question. Please answer me with as much proof as possible.

      No !

      HIV can be detected in several fluids and tissue of a person living with HIV. It is important to understand however, that finding a small amount of HIV in a body fluid or tissue does not mean that HIV is transmitted by that body fluid or tissue. Only specific fluids (blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk) from an HIV-infected person can transmit HIV. These specific fluids must come in contact with a mucous membrane or damaged tissue or be directly injected into the blood-stream (from a needle or syringe) for transmission to possibly occur.

      In other words , it CANNOT be spread by sharing food .

    Gum problems (like ulcer – are my wisdom teeth coming through) please help me, in great pain.?
    Im 17, pregnant and in pain and worry over my teeth.

    It all started off with the flu on saturday. Its now wednesday and my flu has gone but my mouth still hurts. I find it really hard to put my teeth together to close my mouth.

    At the back of my mouth, after my last tooth i have a white circle on my gums. Its just on the right side. It looks like a ulcer but i don’t think it is. If i put my tongue on the piece of skin it lifts like it feels when your adult teeth are coming through.

    I have had medicine for my flu that contains paracetamol and i used bonjela teething gel twice to sooth the pain as i was finding it hard to chew.

    Im going to my doctors next month to have my brace fitted. But any idea’s what this could be in the meantime? I have heard as you get older you can have teeth come through, like molars? i think there called wisdom teeth? Could this be a possibility?

    By the way, i DO NOT smoke or drink and have a healthy diet.

      Your symptoms sound like a wisdom tooth coming through, which you shouldn’t be too concerned about. You said that you couldn’t even close your mouth for a time? Is this because of the trouble area or is it because of several teeth? If it’s just the one area behind your last tooth, it sounds like your wisdom tooth is coming in (you’re at the right age), but if it’s several teeth, you could have any number of problems.
      I would be more concerned with seeing your dentist for regular checkups and making sure your oral hygiene habits are immaculate when pregnant. Your body is going through a lot of changes and your gums will reflect what’s going on in your body. You need to make sure you’re brushing twice a day and flossing at least once a day (this will keep the swelling of the gums down, which tends to occur in pregnant women). I would recommend you see your general dentist since he/she would be able to clean your teeth, take x-rays to determine if you’re getting your third molars, and instruct you in the care of your mouth during your pregnancy.     Just got braces but having gum ulcers?
    I got braces last week so i am wearing them for about 10 days now. And i have ulcers on my gums. Its not opposite the brackets. Its on the gums. 2 just started coming up 2 days ago so in total i have 4 gum ulcers. Is this normal/common or did i have a gum infection? What prevention or fastest way to cure them. I rinse with warm salty water 3-4 times a daily. Please help. The new ulcers is killing me whenever i open my mouth.

      omg!! i got braces thrusday. are you used to your braces yet??? im not .

      anyways my dentist place gave me this special ointment for the mouth. its called brace relief, you can probaly find it in drug stores. salty water will help though.

      i dont have ulcers but my gums are peeling for some reason :/

    Blister or mouth ulcer on the lower lip of my gum ?
    Ive a large blister on the bottom inside of my lower lip, its not painful but it feels like its full of water or something, i have no idea how it could have possibly got there as it is no where near my lower teeth and hence a toothbrush couldnt have caused it, any ideas ? should i burst it with a pin ? its been 3 days with it and it hasnt turned black…it looks gum colored still but tender looking around the swollen part

    saliva signals the stomach acids to work while there is no foof. so these acids digest the stomach walls instead ?

      yes, it is true, but it takes an extreme amount of gum chewing to do it. i mean, like, starting a new stick of gum every 30 minutes the whole time you are awake.
      i once worked with a woman (she was the boss and owner of the store) who lost about 150 pounds on this really extreme diet, but part of it involved chewing gum if you got cravings. well, she chewed piece after piece, did have to go to hospital at one point, but the weird thing was, she farted all the time. she farted ALL THE TIME. and never apologized, even farted while she waiting on people and never missed a beat, just kept on talking.. weirdest thing i ever saw.

    Is it true that you can get stomach ulcers from chewing gum?
    I know it can cause ulcers in your mouth, but I mean the stomach ones. I have this terrible stomach pain every night and I chew gum all the time. Someone told me that might be the cause of my stomach pain. Is this possible? Thanks!

    Any suggestions for treatment of a dog with a mouth ulcer?
    I just adopted a Scottie a week ago with a HORRIBLE mouth ulcer, in the gum below the bottom teeth. I did not notice it until 1) the foul smell and 2) little spots of bloody dschg on pillows, linens, etc. It is about the size of a quarter. She eats well, is happy and playful. I feel no nodules in the head/neck area. I can’t afford a 00 vet bill. I bought some holistic immuno booster medication and vitamins at the local pet supply. I don’t want her to be in pain or ill. Suggestions anyone?

      or TMJ
      candida/thrush..fungal parasites in the guns andsinuses are related to ulcers..increasing or usually decreasing stomache acid (a lot of acid reflux iscaused by NOT ENOUGH acid in stomache look it up)

    Ulcer under tongue ripped my gum! How do I get rid of it?
    A few days ago, I noticed an ulcer near my tooth, under my tongue. I went to the dentist today and had some fillings, but it was nowhere near the ulcer. When I got home I put on some Zilacyin-B, that the dentist gave me, and I noticed that the ulcer was actually a flap of skin, still connected to the gum, that was ripped. I don’t know if this is still an ulcer or if it was never an ulcer at all, but I need to know if I need to see my dentist again about it or if it will just go away on it’s own. Please help, it’s hurting pretty bad.

      Vodka works well. Fill your mouth with vodka (no mix) swish it around for a couple of minutes. This works better than anything that the doctor has.

    What is this weird ulcer type thing on my gum?
    I’m petrified of dentists and haven’t seen one in about 4 years. The last time I went I had some horrific root canal work done and I wasn’t anaesthetised properly. For the last year/18 months, I’ve had this odd ulcer type growth thing on my lower jaw on the outside. It flares up occasionally and when you put pressure on it, it hurts my whole gum. It looks like a big ulcer but it doesn’t sting like an ulcer, it’s more like a spot. I’ve had antibiotics from the doctor but they haven’t done anything. And I am too scared to see a dentist…what could it be and what can be done about it?

      True, antibiotics will clear it but you may need to drain any accumulated pus out first. you don’t want a big, painful, swollen mouth do you?

    There is a ulcer( i think) on my lip. its right beside my gum.?
    its rly near my gum and it hurts a lot. it hurts a little when i smile. and rly painful when i eat.. just wondering whether wisdom tooth only happen behind the last tooth?? it looks like a stretch of ulcer at the left side of my tooth!( where the cheek touches it) !! im really confused, help!!!

    has anyone had mouth ulcers from chewing gum?
    I think I am allergic to “Extra” chewing gum or anything similar with artificial sweeteners. After chewing for a while, I develop mouth ulcers. Hard to find chewing gum containing good old-fashioned suger……maybe only PK?

      There are many bad side effects of chewing gum include diarrhoea, tummy pain and flatulence (from the sorbitol in “sugarless” gum), mouth ulcers (from cinnamon flavouring), high blood pressure and low blood potassium (from liquorice flavouring) and higher blood mercury levels (from dental amalgam already in your mouth, but only in cases of excessive chewing).

    i have a cut gum, an ulcer of my tongue that hurts soo bad and i keep biting accidently and another ulcer on my gum and irritated gums from talking and eating weird due to the ulcers

      Warm salt water gargles will be of some benefit but If it has been going on the long you may want to seek medical attention.

39. QUESTION:
    Do i have an abcess or ulcer on the gum?
    I wear a denture and i believe that is what caused it. There is little swelling of the gum where there is no tooth. My face is not swollen and i dont have pain unless i touch the gum really hard. I cant see any pus or anything, its a bit dark bit its always been like that. I cant go dentist till monday but if the gum is swollen for few days and there is no pain then what could it be?. Again i wear a denture and the denture is few years old so that what might have caused it but what could it be?.

      you have an ulcer. You should stop wearing your dentures and make your gums rest. You can gargle with warm salt water to soothe and heal your gums.

      Its possible your jaw had some bone loss throughout the years since you don’t have any tooth in that area anymore. If there was bone loss, your denture could be a little lose and when you use it, it injures your gums. You probably need a new denture. Go see your dentist just to be sure.

      If you don’t need to wear your dentures, avoid using it for the meantime.

40. QUESTION:
    I think i have either a coldsore or ulcer on my lip?
    How can i tell if its a cold sore or ulcer, as i have ulcers on my gum near the one on my lip.

    (think this is because exams/stress and the sun have triggered them)

      On the lip it is more than likely a cold sore.

      They are contagious until they scab over so no kissing.

      Bathe it using cotton wool dipped in a saturated salt solution, as hot as you can stand it it.

      NOT THAT HOT YOU SCALD YOURSELF.

      It will help with the pain and also the healing process.

    Will my ulcer stop the dentist doing some fillings?
    I am booked in to have six fillings and a root canal done on thursday but I have developed a small ulcer on my lower right gum. Will it affect what she will be able to do?

      Should be fine, unless it is in a place that they will be touching or putting pressure on for a long period as this will make it uncomfortable for you. But there is no reason why the dentist would chose not to do it if it is only an ulcer.

      there are many causes of mouth ulcers.

      CAUSES OF MOUTH ULCERS:

      1. Emotional stress.
      2. Local trauma in the form of ill-fitting dentures or a sharp tooth.
      3. Allergy to local applications like toothpaste.
      4. Vitamin deficiency, especially B-complex, folic acid.
      5. In females, sometime in association with menstrual cycle.
      6. Hereditary, familial tendencies are also seen.
      7. Smoking.
      8. Poor oral hygiene such as not brushing teeth regularly.
      9. Alcohol.
      10. Spicy food.
      11. Drugs like antibiotics.
      12. Low immunity in any illness from TB to AIDS.
      13. Infectious origin like some bacteria or virus.
      14. Tartar in tooth surface.

      First thing you can do to help them healand prevent them in future is the following. Have good dental hygiene and brush 2 times a day with a soft headed tooth brush and do not brush too hard as this can damage gums. Clean your tongue to remove bacteria and germs. Check you do not have any sharp teeth that can cause ulcers. Avoid getting stressed out and try and relax. Smoking and booze and spicy foods can cause and prolong ulcers. Taking Vitamin B may help. Eat plenty of rich dark green veggies and rinse your mouth out with warm salt water for instant relief as the ulcer recovers.

      Hope that helps and your ulcer goes soon and if it does not go away after 14 days, go and see your dentist.

      Horrible habit but it certainly won’t give you holes in your stomach. What you do get is stomach full of air from the constant swallowing.

    Killing a mouth ulcer in its early stages?
    I bit my gum while eating dinner last night, and as of this morning I’ve been in the early stages of a mouth ulcer. They’re incredibly painful, and I was wondering the best methods of killing one before it properly develops? I’ve heard theories on the internet about salt, but other ones saying that it exacerbates things.

    I’ve tried Bonjela, my ulcers seem to be immune to it annoyingly, so I’m thinking more basic remedies than chemist medication.

      Nice job trying to eat your own face. Try slowing down at meal times. ;D

      Now that you have it, there’s not a whole lot you can do to make it disappear quickly. Mouth sores take a while to heal because unlike a cut or open wound on the outside of our body, they can’t scab over and be protected. So they heal from the inside out.

      To help though, take a 50/50 mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water and dab it on the ulcer with a q-tip. then put milk of magnesia on top of that. Do it 3-4x a day. It’ll keep it from becoming infected and milk of mag will soothe the discomfort.

      Also avoid hot and/or spice foods. So no curries for a while!

      The best home remedy is salt water. Add 1Tbs. of salt to 8oz. of warm water and slosh (not sure of the technical term) in your mouth for some time. If doing this a couple days in a row does not make a noticeable difference you should go to the doctor to get it checked out.

    Can artificial sweeteners irritate a stomach ulcer?
    I was driving home and put a stick of Extra chewing gum in my mouth. 5 minutes later I felt a heat and pain in my stomach, as if my ulcer was acting up. The last time I ate before chewing the gum was about 4 hours prior? Can the sweetener in Extra have irritated the ulcer?

      There has been no proven link between artificial sweeteners and ulcer irritation. However, artificial sweeteners can effect your lower digestive symptom causing diarrhea when taken in excess due to an alteration in water absorption.

      i get them alot, they are usually white and hurt really bad, usually you can feel a bump or tender spot when you first get the symptoms. then you feel a hole forming, then after a few day’s they can get sore, and make it hard to eat. It has taken me years to figure out how to avoid getting them and how to make them go away faster, I had to stop eating tomatoe’s, which sucked, cause i love them, some thing’s that help with the pain is salt water, it hurts to rinse at first but for some reason it helpl in the long run, a person told me you can go and get zink lozengens and suck on them. but i never did. so idon’t know if that would work.
