Bleeding from the gums is mainly due to inadequate plaque removal from the teeth at the gum line. This will lead to a condition called gingivitis , or inflamed gums. If plaque is not removed through regular brushing and dental appointments, it will harden into what is known as tartar. Ultimately, this will lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jawbone disease known as periodontitis .

So I have a dentist appointment coming up and so I’m brushing my teeth, flossing and using mouth wash twice a day and noticed how my gums bleeds a little during the process. About how long will it take to have my gums not bleed?

    • ANSWER:
The reason they bleed is because these areas have been neglected for a while and have plaque buildup around the teeth and gums. This irritates the gums, which when brushed over, bleed much easier. If you continue with toe good oral hygiene, there is less plaque around the tooth and therefore no irritant around the gums, giving them a chance to heal. Give it about 2 weeks tops to stop bleeding, provided your oral hygiene regime is really good.

  24. QUESTION:
How often to floss for swollen, receding, bleeding gums?
Ok I have been horrible at keeping up with flossing and my gums have been bleeding easily, and receding and very swollen. So I started flossing this past week every other day and they seem a little better but still swollen. And they’ve been bleeding a lot. I’m wondering how often I should floss this week? I want to do every day like I’m supposed to but is every other day better for now or what? I really just want to toughen them up right now and get them healthier!

    • ANSWER:
Every day is always best! They’re bleeding because they’re infected and the way to clear it up is to continue to floss. The plaque hanging out around your gums is irritating them and that’s why they’re swollen and bleeding. Usually it takes 2-3 weeks of flossing daily to clear up.

Also remember to be gentle! I get worried when I hear “toughen them up” because I envision people being really rough and that will cause more pain, bleeding from trauma instead of plaque, and recession. Be gentle and try not to snap the floss down between the teeth.

  29. QUESTION:
I had three cavities now my gums are cut and bleeding?
I had to go a new dentist yesterday to save money, this guy did three facial cavities and now I have cut and bleeding gums.
How do I help my gums heal?

    • ANSWER:
Bleeding gums are most frequently linked back to a chronic and persistent condition, such as gingivitis, which forces the body to respond in a persistent manner to remove the source of the inflammation, in this case bacteria. Since the bacteria cannot be eradicated, as would be the case with an acute wound site that could be cleaned out, sterilized, and then directly treated with antibiotics, the recurrent nature of the irritant expresses itself in a low grade fever frequently not noticeable to the patient and also a continuous immune system response from the body. Failure to deal with gums bleeding will lead to the necessity to deal with gums receding. If it would still take more than 10 wild horses to drag you to the dentist at this point, the sad reality dictates that you might find yourself with your gum tissue destroyed to such an extent that an extensive skin graft is the only way of saving your teeth. Do not let things progress this far if you have the opportunity to seek out dental health care.

I am not positive, but I think he is too young to see a Dentist.
He could have something in his gums that he picked up, like a splinter off a wood toy….or a small piece of metal….could be several things caught in there. And yes he will scream if it moves, just like a splinter in your finger.
A tip: To help my Son get those teeth thru…I gave him very cold apple slices and that did the trick. While teething…I gave him Frozen Green beans, not French Cut…the regular fat ones. He could hold them just right, and bite them. They were soothing, and had more flavor than the frozen teething plastic gell filled things. BUT….I watched him like a Cat watching a Mouse. I didn’t take my eyes off him for a second.

  41. QUESTION:
My boyfriend and I both have bleeding gums?
Both myself and my boyfriend are experiencing bleeding gums. We live in different states and haven’t seen each other for three weeks. We both started experience bleeding gums about a week ago. Is this just a coincidence or could there be a more serious problem?

    • ANSWER:
hmmm.. could be periodontal disease; just happening coincidentally at the same time. (that’s no biggie….you have to floss more)

BUUUT, it could be a sign of another oral problem. …perhaps you should go get checked out to be on the safe side.

I’d lean toward the periodantal disease, though.

  42. QUESTION:
How can I reverse bleeding gums until I get dental coverage?
I currently experience some gum bleeding almost every time I brush. I normally brush twice a day, but I have increased the amount/duration of brushing in an effort to keep my mouth clean and kill the gingivitis. I usually use listerine immediately after brushing. I also have a bottle of Chlorhexidine (not sure of the spelling) which was prescribed to me about a year and a half ago when my wisdom teeth were breaking through. The expiration date has passed, so I am reluctant to use it. Is the expiration date on Chlorhexidine important? My bottle says to discard after 4/11/06, but I was hoping that it would last longer.

    Other things to consider:
    - I currently have no dental insurance, but I expect to be insured when I graduate law school in 5/07, so I’d like to avoid having to go for now
    - I have ordered a Sonicare e9000 electric brush, hopefully this will help matters
    - I read some favorable reviews of the Oral-B Hummingbird electric flosser. Is it any good?

    • ANSWER:
Listerine doesn’t kill the gingivitis, but it does kill the germs that cause the gingivitis (just like the bottle says). Continue using the Listerine, and do not used expired products, as there are chemicals that, after a certain period, do not perform as they are supposed to perform (like chemical breakdown).
If you are having a large amount of bleeding from brushing, try the following:
1: Get a soft-bristled toothbrush, and replace it every 3-4 months.
2: Be sure to brush your gums while you brush your teeth, as this may break loose some build-up under the gumline.
3: Try the brush-floss-brush again method. It worked for me once.
4: Don’t overbrush. Usually 2-3 minutes is a good time for brushing, and brushing for long periods may tear your gums more than they can heal in between brushings.
5: Brush and floss after every meal until you get to the dentist and get that dental work (may require quadrant detail cleaning such as scaling, where they clean under the gums, and planing, where they surgically move the gum from the tooth, clean the tooth quadrant, then surgically stitch the gums back around the areas to help promote gum growth, it’s not painful, don’t be scared of the dentist’s office). Food that sits in between your teeth from lunch until you’re ready to go to bed is allowed to wedge into the affected bleed areas, and may cause more buildup under the gumline.

  43. QUESTION:
Are Bleeding gums automatically a sign of gum disease?
Everytime I brush my teeth, my gums bleed. I do have a toothbrush with hard bristles. However, if there is a chance of gingivitus I would like to get it fixed.

    • ANSWER:
Bleeding is a sign of gum disease and is NOT normal. I would think that you might be brushing just a little too hard, but it would actually hurt if you were brushing too hard, and if it is happening EVERY time then I know it is not from something else. While some medications could cause bleeding gums and dilantin hyperplasia (gingival overgrowth), you didn’t say you were taking any medications so I assume you probably just have gingivitis. It is very common, and many people think it is because their gums are weak or soft, however that is not so. Healthy gingiva should be firm and pale pink, not red or swollen. You need to see your dental hygienist to get a cleaning and treat it before it becomes worse. Also, switch to a soft bristled toothbrush. I would also recommend using Listerine to help flush your gingiva from bacteria under your gumline. Be sure and brush at least 2x a day and floss as well:)

  44. QUESTION:
what can i do to stop my gums from constantly bleeding?
I have tried CoQ10, i rinse with peroxide and listerine, but my gums constantly bleed. Most of the time my saliva has blood in it. I know I have periodontal disease I can see where my gums have receded. I just want to know what I can do to make them stop bleeding, I’m tired of being able to taste blood all the time.

    • ANSWER:
there is no use using CoQ10 or any anti oxidants when the cause is not treated. If you have periodontal problem, only a dentist can cure you. You may need some antibiotics like oflox + Tini for some time & oral prophalix done. If it is sevear, you may need gum tretment or a flap surgery. After that proper oral hygein is important to maintain good gum health.

Okay i haven’t flossed my teeth in a while and i started flossing daily a week ago and it still bleeds alot. I have to rinse after every space i floss in between. When will it stop bleeding?

    • ANSWER:
Your gums might need time to adjust to flossing. Just make sure not to brush and floss hard so as to tear or damage your teeth and gums.
