Gum disease is a threat to your oral health. Research points to the possible health effects of periodontal diseases that go well beyond your mouth, and may be linked to other systemic conditions. Whether gum disease is stopped, slowed down, or gets worse depends a great deal on how well you care for your teeth and gums daily, as well as with the assistance and treatment by dental professionals.

To elaborate, it should be pointed out that good enzymes that are released because of immunity don’t just fight off bacteria but they also start to break down the bone and connective tissue holding the bone in place. This gradual deterioration of the teeth and tissues is therefore caused by toxins or poisons released by bacteria as well as by your immune response to those bacteria. Over time the extent of the deterioration quite naturally increases and these pockets begin to increase with the extent of tissue and bone loss also increasing.

Eventually the teeth become lose and fall out. Gingivitis is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults, and in most cases treating gingivitis or periodontitis promptly would suffice to avert such outcomes. Treating gingivitis naturally at home can help to some extent but the relief is for the most part symptomatic. During pregnancy when treatment options are limited however treating gingivitis with home remedies for gingivitis may be necessary and medical treatment from your dentist may be deferred till later. In all other circumstances however treatment should begin at the earliest.

Factors Causes and Symptoms

Gingivitis (gum inflammation) can occur at any age. Usually, a person Hygiene factors are critical. There are several factors that can cause gingivitis. Among other things, smoking, hormonal changes in women, diabetes, stress, cancer, AIDS, genetic factors, malnutrition, and drugs. Some medications such as antidepressants and some heart medications can cause inflammation of the gums because of the reduced flow of saliva, which actually has a protective effect on teeth and gums. In addition to severe factors such as stress, hormonal changes, diabetes, and genetics, inflammation of the gums can happen so light as food and hot drinks. But the factors that are more common is someone Hygiene factors and errors in the brush.

The cause of gingivitis is most common in the stacking rocks on the tooth from food scraps that are not cleaned. Coral tooth comes from food scraps that are not cleaned, so there is an accumulation and become rock. If the plaque remains attached to the teeth for more than 72 hours, it will harden and form tartar. Gingivitis is also found in many people who use fake teeth and never noticed the cleanliness fact. Moreover, if the false teeth were made of coarse material, so there is likely to injure the gums, causing inflammation.

Inflammation of the gums can also cause infection through the blood vessels and damage to human organs like heart, lungs, brain, and eyes. If the infection went down to the heart or the so-called percarlitis or inflammation of the lining of the heart. If the infection went up into the lungs can cause TB disease. If you go down to the eye vision problems can occur. And if the infection went up to the brain that can cause meningitis.

There are two kinds of symptoms of inflammation of the gums, symptoms of primary and secondary symptoms. The primary symptoms are marked by the swelling of the gums. As a result the head felt dizzy and feverish. While secondary symptoms characterized by pain when touched or exposed to the gum toothbrush. As a result, the head feels dizzy or commonly referred to as migrants. In the primary symptoms, the gums will appear red when the gums have a natural color pink.

In addition, swelling of the gums and the gums become more flexible than normal. As a result, the gums are no longer attached to the teeth so the dirt easier entry. If people brush their teeth or eating, often bleeding gums and gums become more sensitive. In addition patients will also complain about the smell of mouth, especially in the inflamed gums. Bleeding gums often make sufferers reluctant to brush his teeth by causing illness, it causes plaque and food scraps accumulating thus worsening the condition of gingivitis. In cases of severe gingivitis, then at the time, especially during the morning wake up pillow is packed with blood, and especially if the patient breathing during sleep through the mouth.

Treatment

Diagnosis is established based on symptoms and physical examination results. If found conditions inflamed gums red, swollen and bleed easily then it could be said if he was hit gingivitis. If the patient’s has symptoms which has been mentioned above, he certainly has affected gingivitis.

Gingivitis, or inflammation of the gums if not treated will become severe and spread to the teeth resulting in tooth loss. The situation is called periodontists, which is a further stage of gingivitis, with inflammation of the gums that is more severe. Medical conditions that cause or worsen gingivitis should be addressed.

Find powerful herbal remedies Home Remedies For Gingivitis

If the cause is drugs, excessive gum growth should be removed surgically. If there is a deficiency of vitamin C, vitamin supplement provided. As for cases caused by accumulated tartar, treatment will be done by cleaning the tartar. Just sprayed with warm water and given antibiotics to patients who have a fevere. In addition the doctor usually will also give mouthwash to kill germs and bacteria found in the mouth.

Although this disease can be healed within 2 to 3 days but is highly recommended to patients to get to the dentist to perform scaling or tartar cleaning the interval between 3-6 months. Scaling addition, patients can also do scerentase, namely cleaning germs that can cause gingivitis contained in the root of the tooth. Because the inflammation will spread fear and cause a condition where the patient can not chew food with his teeth. Because if not treated immediately feared would be another disease like periodontists more dangerous.

Even so, toothbrush remains the most important element to prevent this disease. Because simply by brushing your teeth twice a day for brushing your teeth too often it will damage the tooth enamel. Also recommended using a fluffy brush and brush your teeth carefully, not haphazard and short.

  5. QUESTION:
Pain and inflammation of gums near Wisdom tooth site extraction after 3 weeks?
I’ve had my SECOND molar extraction almost 3 weeks ago and my dentist said that the tooth was deeper than the first one. I experienced that by increased pain than the first surgery. The inflammation died down 1 and a half weeks later. But this sensation of “something there” just won’t go away. Yesterday this sensation/feeling was heightened and I could feel pain coming. Today I woke up to a swollen cheek. And yes the inflammation and pain has come back except for the bloodiness and all. I can eat but it is painful at the side where it was extracted before. I went to to the dentist a while ago and she prescribed some antibiotics and strong Betadine mouthwash.

I’m just scared that’s all because this isn’t normal right? I mean it’s nothing that serious or anything right? I’m such a worrywart. Do you think these medications will lessen the swelling again? I feel like a one sided chipmunk with a golfball in one side of the cheek again. URGH!

Is it serious?? Thanks in advance!

my gums in the back of my teeth are getting tender and inflating in between my teeth, is there any way to decrease this? (by the way i have braces)

    • ANSWER:

  8. QUESTION:
    Extreme gum inflammation and pain?
A week ago I woke up with a headache, fever,my throat was sore and my gums were really swollen and painful. I also noticed my lymphatic nodes under my jawlikne were enlarged so I went to the doctor who prescribed me an antibiotic and it did help about the sore throat and cold symptoms but my gums still hurt like it’s unbearable,I can’t eat anything solid.
I went to the doctor again and they said I should rest, take lots of vitamin C and rinse my mouth with a sort of herbal tea. They also changed my antibiotic because the first one gave me tiny little bumps on my face.
The problem is that it’s just not getting better or worse it’s just stagnating and the pain is so severe I wake up and cry. I take some over the counter painkillers to take the edge off but it’s a really intense throbbing pain throughout my jaw and on the surface the small cuts on my gums I got by eating a few days ago are burning.
    .
Now I also have some burning small bumps on the tip of my tongue and 2 bumps on my lips. My lymphatic nodes are still a little enlarged and I don’t know what to do anymore. There is no necrosis and no trenchmouth present and the antibiotics that i take cover spirochetes.

I don’t suppose I have vitamin C deficiency because I take vitamin c in my vitamin drink every day. I had trouble with my gums a while before and it was because of plaque but this time I don’t think it’s plaque because I had it removed 3-4 months ago. I tend to take good care of my teeth but in the past 3 weeks I’ve been out a lot and forgot to wash my teeth after I got home a couple of times. I used to drink and smoke on evenings like that though I don’t usually smoke every day, only socially.

I will probably go to a hospital for some tests this week but I also want to know what could have caused this and what the possible treatments are? The pain is especially severe,my whole lower jaw and cheeks hurt.
I’m 22 and not pregnant, just had the last day of my period about the time when the symptoms started/
The antibiotic that was prescribed to me at first and caused an allergic raction was Amoxicillin.

I am taking now is Doxycycline.

    • ANSWER:
You need to go to a doctor who specializes in gums and teeth… a dentist or a periodontist. Plaque is constantly being formed in the mouth and is the reason why you need to brush 2xday. What you had removed 3-4 months ago was tartar, the crystalized plaque.
Although you may not being seeing signs of trenchmouth, there are other health concerns that may play a role. It is important you get these diagnosed by the right professional.
ER doctors and family doctors have very little training when it comes to oral diseases.

  9. QUESTION:
    Gum Inflammation after new Veneers?
I just had a brand new pair of veneers put on.Two weeks earlier, when the dentist put on my temporary veneers, he needed to cut back the gums due to gum disease. Everything was healing fine, but after the permanents were put on, it seems like it irritated a portion of my gums, and it is turning a whitish color around that pocket and it is sooo red and inflamed! I am not sure what to do about this, and if it’s normal or not for it to turn white! does this mean it’s healing?? it’s been a day since the permanent veneers were put on…

    • ANSWER:
it could be a very tight fit or over lapping veneer.

    Vicco Vajradanti Powder?
hey i had puffy gums, have u heard of this product? i use it cause it says it is for puffy inflammation gums, an bleedin gums, which is what is happening to me, but it is still puffy but the bleeding has stopped, i have used it alot
i use neem toothpaste, an the powder has neem in it, an its natural stuff

    • ANSWER:
My suggestion is not to be too much guided by the product/brand advertisement and literature about any product. It is prudent to consult a orthodontist before you start self medication or treatment. Perhaps your puffy gum may be due to some infection or other problems. People used to clean teet with tender mango tree leaves, Neem leaves and stem, burned paddy husk mixed with salt etc. They may be harmless and with some medicinal values. But today we have an option to get the best advice and why take chance?
      Pl meet the doctor dr.

  12. QUESTION:
how long does gum inflammation last.?
I just got a filling a week ago and I have bad gum inflammation ever since. I had a temporary filling originally which threw my bite off causing the inflammation but it seems like it is worse now. Is there any way besides IB profen and mouth washes to get rid of this? How long does inflammation normally last if your bite was off?
I forgot to mention the one that is inflammed isn’t the tooth that got filled. It is directly above that in between two teeth.

    • ANSWER:
If the bite is correct it should heal very quickly. Definitely well within a week. I would return to the dentist and have the occlusion adjusted again. If things don’ t improve, the tooth may require additional care. Good luck

  13. QUESTION:
How can I reduce gum inflammation around my braces?
There’s a hook on one of my brackets (a funny shaped hing, jusst a spur with, like, a ball on the end) and my gum is inflamed and very sore around it. I’m pretty sure I have some gingivitis going on and I have an appointment to go get my teeth cleaned next month (can’t get in any earlier) but until then, is there anything I can do to reduce the inflammation? Any non-b*tchy adice would be greatly appreciated!

    • ANSWER:
Get one of those tiny inter-dental brushes and clean up round the area as much as you can, also keep up the general brushing with a decent toothpaste. Use salt water to rinse your mouth every time you eat, if your out nip to the bathroom and use plain water.

  14. QUESTION:
Possible cause and cure of upper middle gum inflammation?
    Hi
For the past 5 days or so, I’ve noticed that the middle part of gum… the area between the two upper central incisor teeth…is badly inflamed both at the front and back. Since it’s not exactly any area you can leave alone, it’s getting worse and more painful. Before the inflammation was only at the back side but a very visible veiny-purple colored swell developed at the front over the past 24 hours. It hurts and I have trouble doing anything inside my mouth or in the areas around my lips. My insurance does not cover eye or dental care so I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
if it’s a recent problem and you don’t have any other gum disease, it’s very likely that you have a piece of food stuck in there (popcorn kernel shells are a major cause).

That said, I suspect you haven’t been to a dentist in a while. You should go because 1) they’re really the only ones that can get the food/object out of there properly and 2) they’re the only ones that can rule out a more serious problem like a periodontal infection, decayed root, cyst etc. etc.

  15. QUESTION:
    gum inflammation it hurts allot?
every 3 month i go for a teeth cleaning and every time my the upper back part of my gum hurts like allot for weeks.can some one explain why this happens ? and my teeth are separating all the money I spend on my teeth I should save my money for false teeth instead of cleaning every three monhs what should i do?? pleas help save my teeth<<>

    • ANSWER:
You probably have gum disease. Sometimes cleaning every 3 months is not good enough. You need to care for your teeth all the time. You probably haven’t been brushing your teeth thoroughly (not necessarily roughly and with a lot of pressure and for a REALLY long time–just enough to make sure its clean). Contact your dentist/dental hygienist (i know they may have been ripping you off but your health comes first–you can also probably sue them for cleaning your teeth improperly). The infection you have seems very severe, don’t waste any time. See your doctor immediately. Your dentist should prescribe any gum ointment or drug prescription. Try not to irritate the infection, it may worsen. Peroxide can soothe the pain, Orajel can help a lot too.

      Hope I helped :)

  16. QUESTION:
Inflammation in the gums around the crown..?
I have two 3 crowns on the front….two of them are about 7 years old and one is 6 months old…the gums around them are inflammed and always bleed…how can I solve the problem?? I dont wanna see a dentist

    • ANSWER:
You do need to see a dentist at least every 6months for a check-up/cleaning. Finding decay or gum problems in the early stages will ward off huge expenses to you later. Anytime I’ve seen patients with gum tissues red and swollen around crowns it usually means they are not actually brushing the gum tissue or flossing around them for fear of knocking the crowns off. Please remember the plaque/bacteria is the bad guy not your brush and floss. If you massage the tissues with a soft toothbrush, at first it will bleed, it has no choice. If you continue though over the next 5-7 days it will slowly stop bleeding. Floss around the crowns turning the floss in a “c” shape. Go under the margin of crown and gum and snug up against the neck of the tooth and rub up and down and around, just like you were polishing a shoe. Keep your fingers about an inch apart on the floss to maintain a good tension. If you don’t like coming back down for fear of “knocking” it off, just release one end and pull out. In most cases a crown comes off because the cement has let go or there is decay causing a poor bond for the crown. Think about it….if you keep the decay/perio causing bugs away, the crown has a fighting chance of staying put. If the gums are sore to touch, wet your toothbrush in very hot water, shake off and then brush with a paste of: pinch of salt, baking soda, and enough peroxide to make it moist and able to stick to the brush. Do this for a few days, twice a day and floss anytime, once a day.

I meant to add…..I love Oral B Braun toothbrushes. They are rechargeable and more than one person can use them…just need separate heads. Change the heads every 3 months or so. They usually clear up problem areas in gums very well. You have to brush on the gum tissue right where the tooth and gum meet.

  17. QUESTION:
Gum inflammation after 2nd stage of root canal treatment – help!?
My dentist started root canal treatment on the 28th of March; told me to visit on the 28th of April where the tooth was redressed and x-rayed and refilled, and I’m seeing him again on the 15th of May.

Around Friday, I’ve developed this weird swelling on the gum of the affected tooth. It swells up for a couple of hours, then goes down, then swells up later in the day, then down… and round and round in a cycle. I think it usually takes place around the time of meals. It definitely swells up when I press against it lightly with my tongue. But it doesn’t hurt at all.

Any ideas as to what it could be and if I need to see my dentist urgently?
    It’s hurting today :/

    • ANSWER:
Hm weird that there is no discomfort but again, the nerves has been removed so..check with them asap! Good luck!

  18. QUESTION:
Are my wisdom teeth causing all my sicknesses?
This whole year, my bottom wisdom teeth have been giving me grief. They erupt from the gum and cause pain and swelling in my mouth. Also, this year, I have been feeling lethargic, went through a strange viral infection, a urinary tract infection, and just recently a gum inflammation infection (ANUG). I have always been a very healthy, happy person, but as of this year, I have been getting these strange illnesses and infections. Do you think my wisdom teeth have anything to do with the fact that I have been feeling lethargic and have been susceptible to being sick?

    • ANSWER:
I was always getting earaches when I was younger, and my Dr. told me it was probably caused from my wisdom teeth moving up and down, They would never break thru the surface. So, I had them pulled out, and no more ear aches!

  20. QUESTION:
Gum disease w/ out the inflammation of the gums and bleeding easily? I NEED HELP!!?
So at the root of some of my teeth theres a white line on them and one of my teeth has a very little pocket between the gums and the tooth. but when i touch through the pocket, its hard and it doesn’t hurt. I don’t understand whats going on there, but I don’t think its normal to have a pocket like that cause it wasn’t there before. I went to a dentist a month ago and they said my teeth were fine though they noticed the white parts and told me to use dental hygiene more. but it just came as a shock today when i was scratching my teeth with my nails from the roots up, and i felt a small separation. should i go straight to the dentist or are there a great natural remedy I can use? I’d prefer that, because going to the dentist is expensive and I dont want to get my mom mad (I’m 15). I’m not sure if its gum disease.. cause the only symptom I’ve noticed was the receding of that one tooth (if it even is receding. otherwise why was there that hard part through the hole?). and its only at a sliver on the front of the tooth. the back of it is sealed and the tooth isn’t wiggly, and doesn’t hurt I think. ugh what do I do? The tooth is my first premolar on my left side (bottom tooth). I’m not sure if its a baby tooth trying to come out though. I mean when i lost teeth before they were wiggly and I dont remember spaces being between the gums and the teeth. are premolars even replaceable by a permanent tooth? i dont even remember if i lost it already. im just freaked out and would like some help, please! if you can give me a natural remedy to whatever I have, then at what point should I go to the dentist if things aren’t going the right way? how long do i wait til there’s results, basically.

finally, is this the best way to have good oral hygeine? brush my teeth, floss, then use mouth wash. my mom says i should floss before I brush.. but idk.

Thanks sooooooooo much. I dont wanna be toothless! lol

    • ANSWER:
IMHO, premolars are worse than a month

  21. QUESTION:
Inflammation in my gums or deeper?
Every morning I wake up spitting out dried blood. It’s like my gums bled while I was sleep and dried so it’s brown. Sometimes when I rinse my mouth out there are little tiny clots of blood. Throughout the day my breath won’t freshen no matter how MANY times I brush. I usually have to chew minty gum to not smell. I have been parched for 3 weeks now. I drink a lot until everything just goes straight to my bladder and it seems that I just can never get my thirst quenched. Its so frustrating having a dry throat all day. I have 2 broken teeth that need to be removed but my mom refuses to do anything about health coverage and I have 2 teeth growing in which I think are my 3rd molers. My throat feels swollen like the back and front are rubbing against each other and I see high raised bumps in the back of my throat. I am 17 and am trying to find out what is wrong with my mouth. And if it helps I am also a very stressed person. Please and thank you ahead of time.

    • ANSWER:
You should see a doctor and be tested for diabetes. It is a sign of diabetes to be always thirsty, have bad breath, lots of cavities, and have frequent urination. You may have other health issues as well that are affecting your mouth.
Of course, you also need to see a dentist and have your teeth fixed up but first get a checkup by a doctor.

      HTH, good luck

  23. QUESTION:
I have severe inflammation in my gums?
A long time ago (nearly a year) I had chipped a tooth, then a few months ago I got the first half of my root canal… I never went back to finish it up. Last month this sore developed over the tooth, and it wouldn’t hurt unless I pressed down on it (in which it would hurt, but it felt like whatever was in the sore… would disperse.

Now my entire upper gum (under that flap of skin that goes from your gum to the cheek) is swollen and is dark red.

I was taking Ibuprofen, but I am realizing that if I *don’t* take it.. the cheek swells up but it doesn’t make me want to cry.. so I am taking nothing… but I am starting to get sick.

I am in a small village so I don’t have a dentist, the only thing we have is a clinic who will probably not know what to do with mouth stuff — so I would really love to get a good idea of what I have and what to do to fix it so I can just tell the people at the clinic.

    • ANSWER:
Flossing and rinsing properly will help the most.

Inflammation of the gums, bleeding gum, gum infections and increased sensitivity of the gums and teeth are symptoms that may alert you to gingivitis and/or other oral diseases that indicate a need to seek professional help.

It is not something you should let go. Untreated gum disease and infection is linked not only to tooth loss, but also severe problems such as heart disease and stroke. If you see the dentist about this you will hear a suggestion about antibiiotics or sugery.

      CoQ10

I have found CoQ10 to be very helpful with gum disease and inflammation. CoQ10 quality may vary from brand to brand. That is why it is necessary to find a high quality one. I suggest that you read an article on the high quality CoQ10 I carry, created through a microbe process.

      Hydrogen Peroxide Rinse

In addition, many people find that rinsing the mouth with one capful of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide diluted in a little water after brushing will help with gum infection quite a bit.

Try to hold the Hydrogen Peroxide in your mouth for one minute, swishing it several times. (It will foam, so be prepared for that.) Then spit it out. Don’t rinse the residue from you mouth. I suggest you do this routine in the evening after brushing and flossing the teeth, before you go to bed.

Once the gum infection and gum disease is down, do once a week for maintenance.

Also soak your toothbrush in a small cup of Hydrogen Peroxide between use to clean the toothbrush. Change the Hydrogen Peroxide every few days. Make sure to put the cap back on the H2O2 tightly.

      Flossing and Interdental Cleaners

By flossing or using an interdental cleaner, you are removing decay causing plaque – the sticky film of bacteria that coats your teeth. While toothbrushing removes plaque from tooth surfaces, it can’t do the entire job of removing plaque from between the teeth and under the gum line.

Tooth decay and gum disease or gum infection often start in these areas, so it is very important to clean them thoroughly to prevent cavities and serious gum problems. Using the Hydrogen Peroxide and swishing it around helps to get clear this bacteria between the teeth and in the gums, as well.

“ You do not have to floss your teeth, Only do the ones you want to keep!”

The main goal of treatment is to control the infection.

  24. QUESTION:
Several dental questions – help required?
    Hi,

I’ve just been to the dentist for a tooth scale and polish. However, I’ve noticed there are still bits of tartar left behind and in front of some of my teeth? Has my dentist been lazy/incompetent?

How much tartar needs to be built up before it causes problems?

For the past two years I’ve been having on/off problems with gum inflammation/bleeding. The past couple of weeks has been one of those times. I got the scaling done yesterday and there are small, what I believe are referred to as ‘pockets’ in the gumline below some of my teeth, where the tartar used to be. Will the bits of tartar that are left stop my gums healing?

Unfortunately, I can’t treat my gum inflammation with corsodyl because it has started causing blisters on my tongue, and the skin at the top of my gums to become sore. Is their an alternative? When I asked my dentist she just told me to floss and use listerine. (Listerine = prevention, I need a cure).

    Please advise.

    Craig
SNUTTERTON – Yup, I do use floss and I never realised a dental hygienist was not the same as a dentist but I shall check that out, thanks.

JED SLADE – I use listerine twice a day but still get the build up. I forgot about the salt water though for gums, thanks for the reminder!

FIREGLO – I’ve seen 3 different dentists over the past 2 years and I get them tiny pockets always after scaling yet not one of them has commented on them. Could it be I’m not at the stage you suggested?

CORNYGINGER – Great info thanks. Yeah I got charged for the cleaning but I have to go back for a filling anyway so it wouldn’t change the price. I got back Monday so I’ll mention the tartar then.
My tartar build up is always small btw, I don’t have bad teeth, it’s just I know even small amounts cause problems. My gums only bleed sometimes, after flossing, not brushing.

DR. ALBERT – Will do, many thanks.

HAIRDO – Yeah, maybe NHS practices just have dentists? Time to go private :-D

    • ANSWER:
      CRAIG,
I CONCUR WITH THE INFORMATION ON SOME OF THE POSTS. YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY REMAINING TARTAR, AKA CALCULUS, AFTER A COMPLETE SCALING AND POLISH.
I WOULD RETURN AND SPEAK TO THIS DENTIST DIRECTLY AND INSIST THE CLEANING BE REPEATED GRATIS- THIS TIME BY A HYGIENIST.
A DENTIST DOESN’T HAVE THE PRACTICE AT HYGIENE THAT A HYGIENIST DOES. AFTER ALL, THAT’S ALL THEY DO.

Do i have the possibility to get leukemia?
A while a ago, my teacher discussed us the common ailment of the heart and it’s symptoms ( and leukemia is included). All the symptoms are found in me. Inflammation on gums( which i just have last june). , Tendering of bones, and bruises ( which i always have every week and i don’t know where it always came from). because of the bruises, my classmate notices me and everybody looked at me when my teacher said about the bruises. Do i have leukemia?

    • ANSWER:
A bone marrow biopsy is what you need to have done. I know this because I was diagnosed with AML and ALL both in 1990. I was bruised all over as well. any small bump would cause these bruises. This is all due to the fact that i was anemic, I had a menstrual cycle that was like childbirth,….everyday! Very heavy! Pardon my graphic details. I received an unrelated bone marrow transplant also in 1990 and am now almost 18 years cancer free! Good Luck to you.
      God Bless!

  27. QUESTION:
    Dental mystery. Please help?
I was having lots of pain and sensitivity on teeth 24, 25. X-rays showed little bone loss. I went to various dentists and they said that nothing is really wrong. One dentist then said that i have periodontitis and performed root planing and scaling, which is also known as deep cleaning. After root planing and scaling, I got total relief from pain and irritation on my gums and teeth. I felt cured. Then one month after root planing and scaling, I again started experiencing the same symptoms of lot of sensitivity and pain on teeth 24 and 25. The dental x-rays are same like before. Now again dentists are saying that there really isn’t anything wrong. However, i continue suffering with tooth pain and gum irritations despite having normal x-rays. Went to a periodontist and he said i have gum inflammation but did not do anything to fix the problem and he too sent me home saying there is nothing to worry. All these dentists show the attitude of “there really is nothing wrong. just go home”. However, the truth is that I suffer a lot from sensitivity and pain on teeth 24, 25 and that my gums are very red under 24, 25 teeth. What is the remedy? And what am i to do now since most dentists say there is nothing really wrong? I brush twice, floss thrice and use mouthwash daily.
i read on internet that a toothpaste ingredient called sodium lauryl sulfate is an irritant and cause of gum problems and teeth problems to many people. Now I use SLS free toothpaste but still no change in condition.
i have been using sensitivity toothpaste for over a month and it has not helped me at all.

    • ANSWER:
If the scaling and root planing didn’t work you should probably see a periodontist. Look into LANAP to treat your periodontitis.

  28. QUESTION:
What could cause gingivitis OTHER THAN poor oral hygiene?
I have excellent oral hygiene. I brush two to three times a day, angling the brush at my gum line to reach under the edge of my gums. I floss both gum pockets in between each tooth and behind my last molars, twice a day. I use Crest Pro Health mouthwash after brushing/flossing, twice a day. I was even told it was evident I brush well. But all of a sudden I noticed gum inflammation, bleeding, and soreness. I was told I have gingivitis now. I just turned 25, and neither of my parents (ages 64 and 76) have it.

What else could have caused it? I’m trying to be even more diligent with my dental hygiene, but it’s bordering on obsessive now.
    Help?

    • ANSWER:
Anemia (lack of iron) could easily cause it. A quick test for anemia is to press down on a finger nail. It will turn white. If it takes a long time to turn pink again, you could be anemic. Lack of Vitamin C or lack of niacin can cause it but these two deficiencies are rare and you would have other health problems. Fever blisters in the mouth (herpes) can cause gingivitis or gingivitis like symptoms.

Even if you have good oral hygiene you can still get over the long term a build of tartar along the gum line and you do need occasionally to get your teeth scaled by the dentist but it sounds like have seen a dentist.

You might just have a particularly acidic mouth and an acidic environment is where plaque flourishes. If you eat a lot of sugar, you create an acidic environment. You must counteract that. If you can’t brush and floss immediately after eating something sweet try carrying some sort of mouthwash with you including those mentioned in the articles below.

  29. QUESTION:

  30. QUESTION:
How long does it take for the inflammation/redness to go from the gums when treating gingivitis?
I saw the dentist 2 weeks ago, and have been flossing, brushing my teeth and using the prescribed mouthwash religiously since then. I’m seeing him again tomorrow, but some redness is still there – is this normal. I’m worried that there should have been more of an improvement.

    • ANSWER:
If you were using as the dentist suggested you should be fine. Depending on the severity of the gingivitis depends on how long it will take your gums to go back to normal. I am assuming that you had a mild case therefore I would say you should be fine within the next 2 – 3 weeks meaning that you would have been doing brushing, flossing and rinsing at least 2 times a day. Good luck and keep it up so it does not happen again.

Gum around my wisdom teeth hurts.?
Okay so i have all four of my wisdom teeth. 3 of them are grown out completely and the last one is half way out. If i get this inflammation sometimes, is that normal? would you advise to get them pulled out?

  32. QUESTION:
Why do I have a red gum around dental crown?
I have a crowned incisor which I had redone in 2004. I have had no problems with it until 2009 when the gum around the crown became red and inflamed. It started as small spots of redness and gradually spread until the whole gumline around the crown is bright red and bleeds whenever I brush it.

I am worried the gum is receding and the redness won’t go away! My dentist (who did the crown and the original it replaced) thinks it is gum inflammation caused by pregnancy hormones (I had a baby in May 2008 and January 2011).

I keep it very clean, have had it checked and x-rayed and there is no other apparent cause of this redness.

Has anyone had anything similar? Will it go away and how do I get it to calm down?
Thanks. I do floss but the water pik looks like a great idea. My dentist gave me wiry things to clean around it but they don’t help.

My tooth isn’t actually crowned anymore, it’s a dental implant now (thank you google!) so there shouldn’t be any problem with infection inside.

  33. QUESTION:
Most dentists have said for sensitivity just use sensodyne. But it doesn’t work. What to do?
I have severe dental sensitivity and all dentists I went do not offer any treatment whatsoever except to say “use sensodyne”. They take dental x-ray and then say, “nothing really wrong in x-ray. go home”. I am not satisfied as i continue experiencing dental pain and sensitivity and sensodyne is very useless and failure. Why are they not treating me for sensitivity? Even if x-ray is normal, that doesn’t mean I am a liar. Fact of the matter i have severe dental discomfort and experience sharp shooting pains. Is the field of dentistry really so limited? I have now taken appointment with periodontist because I have gum pain. I have severe red gum and possible gum inflammation. After researching, I found gum disease is treated by periodontist. I just fear that he too would say, “nothing really wrong. go home”

    • ANSWER:
Okay, first question would be how long are you trying the sensodyne for? It takes at least 6 weeks to be effective, and you NEED to use it regularly, meaning only sensodyne 2 times a day every day. If you use something else, it will stop working.

Second, maybe sensodyne just isnt working for you. Ask the dentist next time for a densensitization treatment such as Duraflor.

As for the gum disease, you have gingivitis. You simply need to start with a clean slate and get your teeth cleaned at the hygienist and then brush and floss regularly and properly. Gums should be coral pink and tight to your teeth, no rolling or rounding of the gums and should not bleed.

When you brush, ensure your thorough and getting all areas, also make sure you are brushing for 2 minutes at least 2 times a day. and angle the SOFT toothbrush at a 45 degree angle toward the gums but still on the tooth.

      Good luck!

  35. QUESTION:
I have peridontitis. Can someone please tell me how much bone loss is there?
in the link below is my dental x-ray. I went to dentist and had root scaling and planing today. The gum inflammation has gone. however, 2 of my teeth feel very weak as if they are about to crack. I have placed an arrow mark in front of the x-ray of those 2 teeth that still hurt. In that arrowed x-ray, the center tooth (which appears very long and the one besides it) still feel very weak and are very sensitive. They feel as if they are about to break. They appear to be loosening. With naked eye they appear normal. I want to know if those 2 teeth have any bone loss and why I am suffering so much sensitivity in them. What to do?

You do have bone loss there. You should see a periodontist and see what they can do for you.

I have visited more than 5 doctors including 3 ENT’s, non of them gave me an obvious answer, they all said that I have inflamed throat and that’s it. the 2 ENT’s that I’ve seen used a camera through my nose to check for abnormalities. Here are the symptoms:

    1. Tonsil Stones
    2. Swollen and raised taste buds in the back of the tongue which cause a burning sensation
    3. irritation of the back right side of the tongue
    4. Mild burning in lips with very tiny brownish dots (Too many of them)
    5. Sore throat
    6. gum inflammation that comes and goes (usually in the same spot)
    7. Sometimes I get white coating on tongue when I wake up

  37. QUESTION:
What is this pain all about?
I had this weird pain on my teeth 2 weeks ago. It didn’t hurt like a cavity or gum inflammation. It hurt more like a sore pain, kind of dull and numb.I couldn’t identify if i was hurting on just 1 or multiple teeth. It felt sometimes like the whole left side of my mouth was in pain.
I bought some orajel and applied it in the area. The pain went away.
Then it came back stronger a couple of days ago. Orajel helped but wouldn’t go away just with it. I also took some ibuprofen, which made it go away. But then it would come back every so many hours.
I went to the dentist this morning, hoping for an answer. He took X-rays and said the only think he could see was that i needed a filling on my wisdom tooth and a cleaning.
My cleaning is scheduled for next week.I don’t think the cleaning would do anything.
But after the filling, now it hurts 10 times worse. I never ever had any type of pain or discomfort after a filling. I just took 2 tylenol 30 min ago and didn’t even diminish the pain.
    What can I do?

    • ANSWER:
Well, you can always get a second opinion from another dentist but use the x-ray that was just taken. You could also be clenching your teeth at night. Stressed about anything? This could cause some tooth pain. Are your jaws tense? Also, go back to the dentist and let him know you’re still having problems. The new filling may need adjusting.

  42. QUESTION:
How long will the inflammation last?
Saw my dentist yesterday about toothache related to my wisdom teeth He says they can’t operate until the infection/inflammation goes away or the pain will be much worse for the surgery. And because school starts soon, that pushes my surgery date back to mid-december. That’s all good and dandy, but how long will this inflammation last? I have a prescription for a mouthwash (peridex), and I’m taking extra-strength tylenol, but eating is no longer fun. My swallowing is uncomfortable (though the tylenol almost diminishes that), I can only eat soft, mushy foods, and due the inflammation of my gums back there, my mouth can close, but not as easily/comfortably so I’m wondering how long do these things usually take to pass?
The tylenol is to relieve pain from the toothache. The peridex is for the inflammation.

    • ANSWER:
Tylenol helps for pain but not for inflammation.
Both Aspirin and Ibuprofen will reduce inflammation.
Pick one and take it regularly.

Only 31% of healthy people have this disease. Suppose that in a certain community heart attacks are quite rare, occurring with only 10% probability.

    A. If someone has periodontal disease, what is the probability that he or she will have a heart attack?

    Probability =

    B. If 43% of the people in a community will have a heart attack, what is the probability that a person with periodontal disease will have a heart attack?

    • ANSWER:
      G = gum (periodontal) disease
      H = heart attack

  44. QUESTION:
    Is it possible I’m pregnant?
I think I am 11 DPO. I took two HPT yesterday (10 DPO) both BFN. I tested again this morning BFN. Do you think it is just too soon?
I know my body and what I am feeling is definitely not normal.

6 DPO- Kind of crampy, felt like AF was coming. Later that night I had a severe cramp on my right side that lasted about a minute.
7 DPO- still crampy, sore bbs, felt kind of drunk, Super moody! My lower back was really achy.
8 DPO- crampy, hot, back hurts, sore bbs, moody, off and on nausea, tired.
9 DPO- crampy, back still hurts, tired, sore bbs, inflammation of gums and roof of mouth WTF?, I noticed veins in my wrist and palm are visible.(this really made me curious… they are so bold! totally not normal.)
10 DPO- bbs were really sore, lower back still achy, tired, slight cramping. Two HPT were BFN. One dollar tree brand and FRER.
11 DPO- (Today) FRER in the morning BFN! My back still hurts, and I’m sleepy. I can still see the veins in my wrist and palm.I found new ones last night on my legs. Also my bbs are sore and seem bigger today.
Can anyone tell me if they had any of these symptoms and they were in fact pregnant? I am going to wait until I actually miss my period. I just hate waiting! Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Hey, yeh i got most of those symptoms when i was pregnant but not that early on. Everyone is different though. Sore boobs, tiredness, moodiness and missing my period were the first signs i had and then came the nausea and later on the veins, that wasnt until a bit later on though. It takes about 2 weeks for the fertilised egg to implant on your uterus wall so technically your not actually “pregnant” until 2 weeks after your eggs is fertilised, therefore usually symptoms arnt felt until at least then. But like i said everyone is different, i have heard of people who get nausea a couple of days after they have had unprotected sex.

I know the wait must be horrible but hang in there, only a couple of days left until you can test. You could always try now, it could possibly be too early but if your feeling all these symptoms it could be worth a try. Just make sure if you do and its negative to take another one in a few days time and then maybe another one in a weeks time.

      Good luck

please please answer this and help me.please?
Last week I had an appointment with my dentist as I was suffering from inflammation and gum swelling around the area of partially impacted tooth, the dentist said that if the problem persists 4to5 times even after thorough cleaning up,then only it will have to be removed by minor surgical process as it is not erupted fully but I wanted to avoid this surgery so I have started thorough clean up process involving brushing after every small meal and mouth rinsing using mouthwash and since then my inflammation and swelling with pain disappeared completely, now I have 2 questions 1.will vigorous and strong brushing create an operculum for other wisdom tooth which are’nt impacted?2.wisdom tooth which are’nt impacted but have operculum should be removed?in my case wisdom tooth which are’nt impacted have operculum but till date have not caused problems.please please do help me on this one………..

    • ANSWER:
      In answer to your questions:

1.” Vigorous” brushing should be avoided. Use a soft bristle tooth brush gently but thoroughly.
      2. Wisdom teeth develop an operculum in the process of erupting, if there is room for them in your mouth the operculum will disappear after it is fully erupted. Wisdom teeth should only be removed if they are impacted and could potentially harm the other teeth or jaw bone around them, or if they cannot be maintained by you at home, or have good access for repair should they get a cavity.

  48. QUESTION:
    bleeding gums and mouth area?
We read that a woman posted a similar question on this chat a year ago..wondering if answers were found?? So I woke up in the night last night after dealing w/ gum pain and inflammation for a few days – alot of recent stress in my life as of late- and general extreme fatigue. I woke up and thought I had congestion going down the back of my throat and went ot the bathroom and my mouth and face were covered in blood. It was comming out in jelly-like clots over and over again. My sister took me to the ER- who seemed completely stumped after my gums bled for 7 hours there. Epinepherein didn’t stop it, tea bags (they seemed desperate here) did nothing to stop it either. It mysteriously stopped on it’s own (again, 7 hours later) and they sent me home w/ amoxycilin?? I’m taking it but tonight the bleeding has starting again. It’s not has heavy, yet…help me this is scarry.

I was diagnosed many years ago with LICHEN PLANUS,,, very rear disses. Doctor took the biopsy and it was confirmed. The way it manifests in my mouth is my mouth is very red but it doesn’t bleed, however, if I am eating spice food i.e. black pepper (is the worst) onions, garlic and anything that is fermenting my mouth will bleed and I will have problem eating because of the sourness in the mouth.
I hope this may help a bit
      Good luck

  49. QUESTION:
    teeth issues, gum is pulsating?
I just got a large filling in a bottom molar about 6 days ago. That tooth isn’t bothering me at all right now, but the one above it is pulsating. It doesn’t hurt it is just an annoying pulsating to it. It feels like the gum actually not the tooth. It doesn’t hurt when I eat or drink anything, and normally starts bugging me at night. I don’t clinch my teeth or grind my teeth, so I am trying to figure out if this has to do with my bite. The dentist said I didn’t have any cavities so I don’t understand. There does seem to be inflammation of the gums. Some inflammation I had has gone away but that tooth or gums I can’t tell is still buggin me and driving me insane. What could it be. It has subsided some since I got the permanent filling in the other tooth but it still bugs me, especially at night. Is this my bite? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Sound like you need to have the bite adjusted. It could be that the one tooth is taking the bulk of your biting force. The reason the gums feel wierd is bc the ligagents that hold the tooth to the soket are acting as schock absorbers. In your case they are working over time. have the filling adjusted so that your biting force is spread over many teeth and not concentrated on one tooth.

  50. QUESTION:
What is effective in relieving the side effects caused by cancer medications?
My mother, who is 61, has metastatic renal cell cancer and has been put on a treatment regimen which requires her to receive intravenous Avastin once every two weeks and have Roferon-A shots three times a week. She has since suffered such side effects as tiredness, lethargy, muscle aches, gum and mouth inflammation, chills, fever and, recently, loss of appetite. Is there anything she could use, eat or drink to ease the side effects?

    • ANSWER:
She needs to talk to her oncologist.

Many of these symptoms are treatable.

The fever is a cause for concern – I was told with any fever to report to emergency room immediately when I was on chemo.

I would not be giving anything other than a good healthy diet without an ok from the oncologist to avoid any interactions with medications.
