Receding Gum Line

It's difficult to stop gingival recession because the signs are too subtle. The effects are also extremely unsightly, and evident every time you smile. There are so many reasons why gingival recession happens and gum tissue is lost.

Why Gums Recede

What goes on when gums recede? Gum receding due to teeth overcrowding is common. If the teeth is in a strange angle, there is pressure on the gum line to cover all of the teeth. If the receding gum line is common among family members, the problem could be genetic. Age may also be a reason. Gum problems are some of the things that middle age adults have to deal with. Loss of gum tissue and teeth normally starts at 40, but younger adults may experience the phenomenon because of other lifestyle factors.

Some people brush their teeth over aggressively. When a person is too rough with brushing, gums bleed and more gum tissue is lost. The enamel covering the gum line is a fragile thing. Choice of toothbrush, together with brushing technique, may be the most simple cause of gum recession.

On the other hand, inadequate brushing may also cause gum recession. Bacteria builds and gets traction around the gum line if the brushing is not done right. Enzymes produced by the mouth to fight off bacteria and those produced by the bacteria result in the damaging of the gums.

People with eating disorders often show gum recession. Gums suffer when a person is bulimic. Nutrient loss because of a bad diet can also be the cause. Receding gums are a problem for those who smoke and chew tobacco.

  1. QUESTION:
What contributes to a receding gum line?
My dentist said I have a receding gum line. I forgot to ask them what causes it! Can anyone help?

    • ANSWER:

  2. QUESTION:
How do you fix a receding gum line?
I have this really bad receding gum line on my lower-front-right tooth. Is there any way that I can possibly fix it? Is there a better way to brush or floss or what?

      oh my! me too!
my dentist recommend to slightly pull it up everyday like you’re massaging it up. slowly by slowly it stops receding. it works.
try it… but you can consult you r dentist about it, he may recommend to brace it for a fast effect.

  3. QUESTION:
Can you fix a receding gum line?
I recently visited the dentist and they said I had a receding gum line. They educated me on how to brush lighter and in circles. I understand that this will stop the gums from receding but will it repair the damage that I have already done? Any other suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
your gums are receding… we have what we called: periodontitis. it’s a disease of the gums. the gums have receded due to accumulation of plaque in the gum line. periodontitis have several stages:early, moderate and advance. if your on the stage of early perio maybe scaling can still help. you always need to have cleaning of your teeth. and go for deep scaling under freezing… they will clean the roots so that the plaque will not easily accumulate. it will repair on it’s own. the gums will heal because we have antibodies that help heal the gums…

      >also try other dental gadgets like interdental brushes, floss and sulca brush it will help you maintain the oral hygiene of your teeth and at the same time you save your teeth from falling out.

  4. QUESTION:
is it possible to have a receding gum line?
like a receding hair line, is it common for some people’s gums to pull away from your teeth? i think mine are. some gums over my teeth seem higher than others, and more sensitive. as if the root is exposed. help please! advice?

    • ANSWER:
If you have receding gums, it is indeed a cause for concern and the best thing that can help you is to see your dentist as soon as possible so that your dentist can assess the extent of any gum problems and can be able to giver appropriate recommendations and certain treatments that can improve the condition. In general, gum disease is caused by bacteria in plaque and they release toxins. And the first thing that you may get to notice is that your gums do bleed without any pain. Eventually, gum disease can cause teeth to become loose, and pockets are formed in the gum. In these pockets, bacteria can cause infection in the gums, accompanied by swelling, pain and destruction of the bone that supports the teeth.

  5. QUESTION:
What do I do about receding gum line?
I’m 16 and I have noticed my gum line has receded significantly recently. I brush my teeth twice a day and take good care of them, but I heard this could actually be caused by brushing *too much*. I also drink coffee in the morning which may contribute to it. Is this true? Are there any ways to rebuild gums?

    • ANSWER:
Do you floss? Receding gums can be caused by gingivitis. It’s important to floss because gums like to stick to clean surfaces. It your teeth aren’t clean in between too, then your gums won’t hold well, and they’ll begin to pull away or recede.

The guy above me is partially right. you need to make an appointment with your dentist ASAP. He’s wrong, however, about the periodontitis. You could develop this, but that wouldn’t really happen unless you were completely careless with your teeth (never brushing, stuff like that). I suppose it could happen to you, but the likeliness probably like…1 in a million. Bottom line, you NEED to see the dentist about this before the recession becomes too large.

Are there ways to rebuild gums? kind of…you can have procedures done to fix the recession.

As for the reason this is happening. I don’t really know. If you’re flossing, I don’t know what could have caused this. Griding you teeth can cause recession. Do you wake up in the morning with jaw pain? You might be grinding your teeth at night.

There are several things that can cause recession.

Remember, schedule that appointment as soon as you can!

  6. QUESTION:
My dentist said my receding gum line could be healed, is this true?
A few days ago I noticed my gumline for a few teeth were receding, so I went to the dentist today. He said it mild and that if I was gentler with brushing my teeth and went in circles, it could still be healed because I’m young. (13) But, I surfed around the internet and apparently, thats not true. Is it?

Also, because of receding gum line, are my teeth going to fall off or something?

    • ANSWER:
Often a receded gum will not grow back but with the proper brushing method he was telling you about, it will get no worse. In cases of severe gum recession grafts may be placed but your condition is very minor and the dentist sees no problem if it doesn’t get worse. Good luck.

  7. QUESTION:
I am also worried about receding gum line. What should I do?
I had braces about 5 years ago. Since then I loss my retainer and I have developed gaps in my teeth on the bottom. My bottom gum line has also begin to recede so bad that the root of the teeth are now exposed. I haven’t been experiencing any pain until recently but it goes away. I was also told about gum grafting. What should I do?

    • ANSWER:
go see a periodontist immediately , I didn’t and now I only have half my teeth

  8. QUESTION:
why do people say u canr fix a receding gum line?
i had 1 tooth that had a receded gum line and i brushed my teeth, flossed, listerean 3 times a day and it was normal again, so y do people say u cant?

    • ANSWER:
If it’s bad enough it can’t be fixed. But usually it can be fixed by brushing and flossing (listerene does almost nothing).

  9. QUESTION:
I have a receding gum line of the front two bottom teeth due to braces. What can I do to cure this?
I am very concerned about my gum lines receding. I am nineteen and have braces. My teeth look really great except if I pull my lip down and look at my gums on the front two bottom teeth. But I brush carefully, floss, etc. I have very good oral hygiene.

The recession is pretty bad. I have called a periodontists but hope i don’t have to take it that far. I don’t want to loose those teeth.

Those two teeth are sensitive to the touch/hot/cold more recently, where the gum is receding especially. I don’t bite into anything even a little hard with those teeth, I can but I am afraid of making them worse. They aren’t loose or anything. I keep them clean and brush lightly. Now I will try swishing with warm salt water as I saw someone else’s question about the same thing and that was recommended.

    1) Is there something that i can do to try to restore the gums without surgery?

    2) Once the braces are off could they get better on there own?

Please give me any advice you have.

    Thanks

    Renee

    • ANSWER:
This is something that you should discuss with your Orthodontist. It may be that the teeth are being moved too quickly causing this recession.

Do not scrape your gum tissue or use a tooth pick. Continue to brush and floss as you have been and use warm salt water rinses.

Call your ortho or dentist for an exam and consult in regard to this problem. It may be that you have nothing to worry about and this just “looks” odd to you due to the movement. Ortho movement will make your teeth loose and feel more sensitive.

If you’ve not had any hygiene problems in the past, then it’s unlikely this could be perio.

I hope I’ve been of some help and that you will discuss this with either your dentist or your orthodontist as soon as possible. Good luck with your ortho treatment and continue to keep them clean for the best end results of a beautiful smile!

Additional information: If you have excellent hygiene, have kept up with your normal cleaning appointments and do not have plaque build up on your gum tissue. Do not use a tooth pick to make your tissue bleed. You are in braces and need to have this checked by your ortho or dentist, I can not stress this enough. Do not damage your tissue any further by prodding under the tissue with objects, let your dentist decide what should be done for your best dental health. You can stimulate the gum tissue by rubbing it with a clean finger after flossing and brushing, not a finger nail, just the finger. Please see your dentist for an evaluation.

  10. QUESTION:
What causes receding gum line and what can I do to stop or heal it?
Also, as an aside, are chemicals in toothpaste (sensodyne) or chewing gum (xylotol) that are supposed to be good for teeth bad for gums? It seems like the more I take care of my teeth and enamel, the more I feel I have a gum issue. Is this my imagination? Any help with this topic is appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
You are probably brushing too hard. you need to have at least a soft brush, but i would recommend using an extra soft brush. Brush very lightly. fluoride toothpaste and xylitol are not bad for you gums they. Sensodyne is good for your teeth because it has potassium nitrate in it that occludes dentin tubules for less sensitivity. Xylitol is a natural sugar that we produce from our bodies. so anything with this is great, it stimulates salivary flow which helps dry mouth, reduce cavitys, reduce the pH level in our mouth. All these things are good for your teeth and gums.
When you have gingivitis your gums dont recede they are inflamed and red, and can recede from calculus build up under your gums. but really its from brushing too hard or touching your gums with something that makes them want to recede. just floss, brush softly, and even use some non-alcohol fluoride mouthrinse and you should be good!

  11. QUESTION:
What to do about a receding gum line?
Today when i was looking at my teeth, I noticed that the gums for one of my teeth was a lot lower than the others.
The reason i didn’t notice until now was because I usually don’t smile with all my teeth, and when i brush my teeth I don’t actually watch myself.
But now i’m worried, how do I reverse this?
I don’t have any pain, and the only thing I have is a lot of tooth showing.

  12. QUESTION:
i have a receding gum line and a few black spots. what could it be?
i noticed my gums around my bottom teeth are recedind and i have two raised black spots on my teeth at the gum line. they bleed occasionally when i brush. any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
~At first glance, I was thinking cavities… they happen more easily on root surfaces. But, they’re bleeding… this could be something more serious…
At any rate, you need to see a dentist, or possibly an endodontist, to have this problem resolved.

  13. QUESTION:
Urgent, my gum line is receding on particular teeth?
What should I do? Should I go to the dentist.
I’d really hate to get a gum graft and get it surgically done.
Are there any medications to aid receding gums?

    • ANSWER:
Make sure you are not brushing with a hard bristle brush. And overuse of mouthwash with alcohol will shrink the blood vessels in your gums and cause them to recede. Rembrandt mouthwash has no alcohol. And see a dentist too no matter what.

  14. QUESTION:
How can you stop your gum-line from receding?
My lower teeth gum-line is receding kind of badly.. i’m getting a little bit worried about it.. What can I do to prevent this? I have to admit, I’m 18 years old and kind have been a slacker for the past couple years (doing better now!) and haven’t been brushing my teeth on a regular basis. What should I do to prevent this?

    • ANSWER:
Maintain good dental hygiene, seek regular dental care and change your tooth brush often. good Luck

  15. QUESTION:
For the last week I’ve been brushing my teeth too hard and I think it caused receding gum line. What can I do?
I realize now I’ve been brushin them too hard and I’m only 18 but now my bottom teeth seem more exposed.. Will the gums come back naturally if I brush more softly?

    • ANSWER:
Once you have caused the gum tissue to recede, there’s no going back. You do need to make sure you brush your gums though, just never use any tooth brush other than soft or extra soft. Use a sweeping motion going down on the uppers and going up on the lowers.

  16. QUESTION:
How can you reverse a receding gum line?

    • ANSWER:
A patient cannot reverse gum recession, only a dentist or periodontist can. It requires surgery. Soft pink tissue is grafted to the area of recession. There are several graft techniques and your periodontist should discuss these with you. The cost of each technique varies as does the appearance of the final result. The source of the graft tissue can be the roof of your mouth, cadaver tissue from a tissue bank, or pig tissue.

It is very important that you find out WHY your gums are receeding and treat the problem so that you don’t get a recurrance in the same location or elsewhere in your mouth. The causes of recession are numerous. Again, have your periodontist discuss the causes of recession and teach you how to prevent it.

  17. QUESTION:
Receding gum line or new tooth?
Yesterday I noticed that I have a small-medium amount of of gum missing on my back molar, along the outside of my jaw and towards the back. My wisdom teeth have not come in yet (I’m 24), but I’ve been able to feel them under my gum line for years.

I’m wondering if either my wisdom tooth is trying to come in, or if I have a receding gum line?

    • ANSWER:
sounds like you’re cutting new teeth. when i got my wisdom teeth, they pushed the whole line crooked. keep brushing.

  18. QUESTION:
How do I slow down my receding gum line?

    • ANSWER:
Use a soft brush and normally I recommend an electric type such as the Oral B Braun or Sonicare. They won’t let you put too much pressure on your gums when you brush.
If you clench or grind your teeth when you sleep you need to get an appliance made to protect your teeth and gums from the pressures being put on them. You can ask your dentist about this and have it made to fit your teeth.
If the recession is in a limited area (1 – 3 teeth), you can have a graft placed to cover the root area.
Use small, circular motions with your soft brush. I prefer a compact head so you can’t brush too big of a stroke. After brushing the gums, you can hold the bristles above or below the recession and then sweep down or up depending on which arch you are brushing. Do this 3 or 4 times in each area. Brush for 2-3 minutes twice a day and also floss once a day. The healthier you keep the gum tissue will help make the tissue strong and more resistant to pulling forces.

  19. QUESTION:
why is my bottom gum line receding?
My dentist said that my bottom gum line is receding. He wants me to get a gum graft. I know it is a very painful thing to have done. My question is if I dont have it done will I lose my 6 bottom theeth. My dentist said that he was not going to tell me that I would lose them or that I would not lose them. He just said that it was not healthy to have a receding gum line.
    teeth lol not theeth

    • ANSWER:
It is caused by aging. You might try using a Waterpik before a proceedure. My grandmother has used a water pick for over 30 years and has no gum receeding, but my mother, has some and she hasn’t used a waterpik, so we bought one. Goodluck.

  20. QUESTION:
Is there anything I can do to reverse a receding gum line?

    • ANSWER:
soft or extra soft toothbrush only! No pressure when brushing, might try switching to holding toothbrush with thumb and two fingers to avoid too much pressure. Gentle circles when brushing. If too much recession is occuring it can need surgery/grafting, sometimes the attachments around the mouth can be too tight and pull the gums down (this usually happens in middle areas of front of mouth).

  21. QUESTION:
what causes receding gum line? How can I get my gums back to normal?

    • ANSWER:
Smoking and poor oral hygiene (plaque causes inflammation and the gums pull away from the bacterial build up).

Stimulating the gums helps – use a Sonicare brush, floss thoroughly, and use mild mouthwashes like Biotene.

I also recommend Tom’s of Maine Natural Toothpaste in Mint.

  22. QUESTION:
    Treatment for receding gum line?
I don’t have dental insurance so i’m looking for an at home treatment for receding gum lines. I noticed it starting to happen about a month ago, and it’s mainly just happening to the front teeth on the top row. Any suggestions would be helpful thank you!

    • ANSWER:
There’s no treatment, only prevention. Use a soft tooth brush if you aren’t already, but other than that a dentist will be able to tell you how to further prevent the recession.

  23. QUESTION:

  27. QUESTION:
How can I heal a receded gum line on a single tooth?
Around 4-5 months ago I started to notice the gum line of one of my top back teeth was receding. The gums around my two bottom incisors look a little odd, but they don’t look anything like the top one. I was workin at a “find-some-way-to-stay awake” job, and drank tea with like 7 sugars every 2 hours. The thing is, I never really cared for sugar, so this was the first sugar overload my body’s ever had.

I brush twice daily, and I’ve never had a cavity in my life (again, dont care for sugar), but this gum just won’t go back down to normal.

Any ideas (other than see a dentist for the time being) on how to help my poor gum out?

    • ANSWER:
You are correct once your gums receed they will not come back. The only alternative is gingival gum grafts from the roof of your mouth. The sooner this is done the better chances of saving your tooth.

  28. QUESTION:
Dental Implant and Receding Gum line?
I just came back from the periodontist and he informed me that I will need to get a dental implant. The gum around the front tooth is gone and will not grow back, and when I get the implant it will be larger than the other front tooth. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this same experience? How will they treat the missing gum?

    • ANSWER:
      see a periodontist asap

  29. QUESTION:
question about 1 tooth with a receding gum line?
im calling to make an appointment with my dentist, to get my teeth cleaned. i have 1 tooth in the front on the bottom, that has a receding gum line, and has some plaque build up or whatever on it. im not sure what you call it. ive never had even so much as a cavity or any other work besides cleaning. i need to know what i should tell them is wrong with my tooth when i call to set up the appointment so i can have it taken care of when im there, and not need to make a 2nd appointment. is there a name for this???

    • ANSWER:
You won’t have to tell them if your scheduling for a cleaning, they will ask if you’re having any problems and you can mention it then. They will let you know what causing it and what you can do to correct it. If you’ve had good hygiene and maintained regular appointments it’s probably recession from tooth brush abrasion. If that’s it you’ll just need to change to a soft tooth brush and lighten up on your brushing. Or it could be from excessive plaque, tartar and calculus build up below the gum line that has the tissue irritated. Then you will need to floss and brush better in that area if this is the problem. It will be taken care of during the cleaning appointment. But if you’ve maintained your teeth, it’s probably something minor that they will tell you how to correct. So when you call for the cleaning appointment you can tell them about it, or wait and tell them when you go in. I doubt they will set up a second appointment that day when they don’t know what needs to be done yet, if anything beyond a cleaning. Hope I’ve been of some help today and don’t worry your dentist will take care of the problem. Good luck!

Misty’s advice isn’t correct. As perio disease doesn’t just appear in an anterior tooth, it’s the progression of gingivitis that’s left untreated that advances into perio disease, it doesn’t affect just one anterior tooth. It’s usually not as bad in the anteriors as they are brushed much better being the smile teeth.

  30. QUESTION:
Labrets and receding gum line…lose any teeth?
Has anyone ever had any serious problems and/or actually lost their teeth from the receding gum line that we are so warned about when getting these piercings? What did you do?
PIERCINGS people, piercing. I’ve never heard of anyone losing their teeth due to acne!!!!
You do get receding gums from a piercing. I have a labret and it has receded my gum on the one tooth where it is rubbing.
Yes and I would like to hear (read) the stories of those ‘serious oral damages’.

    • ANSWER:
If you are pierced by a competent piercer and wear the correct length labret post, you shouldn’t have any problems with receding gums.

Personally, I wear circular jewelry (cbrs and cbbs) in my lip piercing, so I don’t have that concern.

People have had serious oral damage, though, and it is permanent.

  31. QUESTION:
    Surgery for receding gum line?
My dentist wants me to have a graft done from the roof of my mouth to “beef up” my receding gum line. I’m only 22 and there has been a ton of recession (genetic) so its pretty necessary to have done. I’m just curious if anyone has had this done?

What is the total healing time? Does it hurt? Any other info?

I asked the doctor, but they always lie to you and say that it wont hurt, you’ll barely even notice pain, etc.

    • ANSWER:
The pain at the site that they put the graft you will barely notice. On the other hand, the place where they take the graft (roof of the mouth) will be quite sore. It will make eating difficult and salty food will irritate it as will things like orange juice. It will heal and get better. It’ll be better than losing a healthy tooth

  35. QUESTION:
gum infection and receding gum line?
so about a year ago I went for a cleaning and the hygenist dig this hole in behind my bottom front teeth that never healed and keeps on getting infected….I haven’t went back to the dentist because they basically left me butchered…anyways my gum is infected again for the 4th time since…this time I got a really bad fever with it and ulcers on my cheeks because of it….I haven’t even eaten anything in 4days… I went to the doctor last week and they prescibed me a mouthwash and antibiotics and he told me to go to the dentist as soon as possible because my gum line is receding pretty bad because of this infection and it could spred to the root…I have been on antibiotics for 3 days now and I noticed the gum is almost peeling away from the surrounding teeth but the infection is clearing up…I can’t get to a dentist for another 3 months because I won’t have insurance until then… so my question is is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening anymore or even to keep my teeth from falling out before I can get to the dentist….this is the worst its been infected yet and happened so fast and honestly I am scared that they are gonna do more damage than good again…this dentist even when he removed my top wisdom teeth left a piece of bone in my gum that is really painful…

    • ANSWER:
I had a gum recession over one tooth from braces. They had to do an operation where they took a graft from the roof of my mouth and pack it down around the tooth with the recession. It really needs to be looked at fast because you can lose your tooth if it goes too far down. You should go to a periodontist instead of a dentist. I didn’t have any insurance either and the operation cost me about 00.

  36. QUESTION:
Receding gum line on one tooth?
I have been wearing braces for three and a half years now. I have very small teeth. I have since birth. They seem about half the size of other adult teeth. However, my dentists or orthodontist have never said anything negative about this. Apparently it’s normal. Anyway, i just went to the ortho yesterday for my monthly adjustment, and later that night i noticed my right canine tooth is more visible than it used to be. I looks like the gum line is receding. On all my other teeth, the gum comes right up to the bottom of the bracket, where as on this tooth, i can see a good amount of tooth under the bracket. its the only tooth with this much visibility. I heard it could be because i’m brushing too hard. Does anyone else know anything about this?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, brushing too hard can cause the gum to recede.

However, it is possible that in your case that is normal and you may need gingivectomy to expose the other teeth to a normal level after the braces are removed.

  37. QUESTION:
    Receding Gum Line Issue?
For some reason, my gum line is receding, so do I hae gingivitis or periodontitis? And if I do, can you also tell me how to not make it worse for at least two weeks? (I got a dentist appointment then) Please don’t tell me to brush my teeth, floss, or use hydrogen peroxide. >__< I already use them as a regular routine. Oh, or is it the hydrogen peroxide? I asked this question before and one of the answers I got was that the hydrogen peroxide was eroding my gums...but I want to take the right action. Any helpful advice please. :)

    • ANSWER:
nooo, my dental hygentist told me to use hydrogen peroxide. You probably have to see a periodontist. Depends on the numbers they give you for any pockets you have. If you have a lot of sixes, you will deff have to see a periodontist. I wont bother to tell you the fun you will have there.

  38. QUESTION:
How to fix a receding gum line for the second time?
Someone has already asked about receding gum lines, but I needed an answer for myself. In the fall of 2006, my dentist scheduled me for a skin graft because they noticed my gum line over both of my canine teeth was receding. They told me that after the skin graft, my gums should stop receding. Now, three years later, they are back in the same condition as before the surgery. As a child I didn’t take very good care of my teeth, and that’s a possible reason it happened, but the skin graft should have fixed that. I’m pregnant now, so even if I was able to afford another surgery for it, I wouldn’t be able to get it. But I was wondering if there was anything else I would be able to do about it.

    • ANSWER:
Maybe you brush too hard. I’m not an expert or anything, but I have receding gum lines over my teeth too, and I always assumed it was because I really go at it with my tooth brush. My recommendation would be to go easy while brushing and if you’re using a hard bristled tooth brush switch to a soft bristled one. You should probably also use mouth wash if you still feel your mouth isn’t sufficiently cleaned. Another big cause of receding gum lines is bacteria. Your body constantly creates the bacteria in your mouth, and your only natural defense to it is saliva. Do you sleep or breath with your mouth open? Because if you do you are drying out your mouth, and without the saliva there to keep the bacteria in check it runs wild and starts to literally attack and deteriorate your gums. Floss would probably help, just don’t floss hard because it will have the same effect as brushing too hard. I’m not sure which if either of these is your problem, but I hope it helps. Oh and remember, Once you fix the root problem your body will do what is always does, fix things. After a while your gums will grow back and you will be excellent. Well, that’s all the advice I have, good luck. And congratulations on the baby. ; ) One last thing (sorry I keep rambling on, but I just remembered this) if you don’t floss right now, and you decide to start, don’t be afraid if your gums bleed at first. That just means the bacteria has been building up between your teeth for a while and it was hurting your gums. As long as you floss regularly and correctly the bleeding will stop and (hopefully) your problems will be gone and your gums won’t be.

I was just looking this up because you made me curious, and I found a product called OraMD. It’s supposed to kill the bacteria in your mouth. You may want to ask a doctor before using it, but maybe not because I highly doubt you swallow it. Oh well, I’ve rambled long enough, and if you took the time to read all this I’m sorry, but I hope it helps. (In which case I’m not sorry and you will be receiving a bill for services which will total .39) Just kidding (obviously) I just wanted to write more. :D

  39. QUESTION:
Tooth roots showing in gums? Not receding gum-line or anything, I mean at the bottom of my gums?
I noticed my inner gums near my left molars were getting sore. I didn’t think much of it. Just thought it was some kind of normal sore. Anyway, I try looking in the mirror today to see what it was, and it looked almost like the tooth root was slightly poking through my gums. This is like receding gum-line or anything. It’s at the bottom part of my gums.
    Here’s what I mean…
Sorry for the horrible diagram I made on Paint:

    http://oi51.tinypic.com/oh0gmh.jpg

So this is supposed to be the view from the inside of my mouth. The inner gums. I can see something white in my gums, it’s sore, and there is a hard bump there (almost like a tooth or something).

I’m also getting my wisdom teeth in. They are currently partially erupted. Not sure how exactly they are coming in. I just didn’t know if that could affect my other teeth.

So my question is: Any idea what’s going on and what the prognosis is?
I will see a dentist, but I’m just asking anyway to get an idea now of what may be wrong. Or if it’s normal.

  40. QUESTION:
    receding gum line from piercing?
I had my anti-monroe pierced (like a labret on the side of my mouth. instead of a regular lip piercing it’s lower) but it kept rubbing against my gum on my one tooth and made the gum line recede. I took it out yesterday after having it in since April. Will my gum go back to normal now?
I’ve had my labret before for 2 years and it didn’t screw my gums up one bit. I took it out simply because I wanted my anti-monroe more and it would look bad to have two. The placement of my anti-monroe was off because the piercer did a shit job. It’s not because of the piercing itself, it’s because it wasn’t alligned properly. I think the only lesson to be learned was don’t get your piercings done by a little old lady who doesn’t card, charges , can’t speak english and has poodles running around the shop.

    • ANSWER:
      Ouch. Tough lesson to learn…
Once your gums recede, there’s not much you can do. (This is why piercings like this ARE BAD! NO, NO!)
You’ll want to talk to your dentist to see what to do now. If its bad enough, you may need a graft (they’ll take a small patch of tissue from your hard palate or another area of your mouth and attach that to bring your gumline back to where it should be). Or, he may just advise you to be careful with your brushing so you don’t damage the gums worse.
And, whatever you do, leave the piercing out. And don’t do anymore. They’re not worth it… any kind of piercing in the mouth can cause problems with your tissue and/or your teeth.

  43. QUESTION:
My tooth hurts when I lie down and looks like receding gum line((just had wisdom teeth pulled))?
Okay, so I just had my wisdom teeth pulled yesterday morning ((all 4 of em)) and now it’s 2:25 in the morning, and I can’t sleep because a few of my front teeth hurt when I lie down. It looks a bit like a slightly receding gum line too, but I’m not too worried about that, I’m guessing it’s just coming from the swelling of the surgery. Strangely enough though, my pain goes away when the teeth are wet, so I’ve been just keeping a mouth full of water for the past few hours. But all that’s done is make me drool and pee a lot! Any help would be great. And just to let you know, I’m on 1 Morton and 2 vicadins(sp?) and it hasn’t helped at all. I’ve also been icing my teeth. THANKS FOR ANYTHING!!!

    • ANSWER:
Placing ice on the outside of your mouth helps for swelling. You are suppose to switch to heat next.

I would go back to see your dentist just in case to get an opinion. It never hurts!

Take more than one Motron if you can!

      Get better soon :)

  44. QUESTION:
what causes receding gum line and how can it be avoided or even reversed?

    • ANSWER:
Go to a good periodontist. Gingivitis is one reason you may have receding gums. A periodontist can do something called root planing or scaling, and it cleans out all the plaque and tartar below the gumline. It can tighten up your gums. The periodontist may also put you on an antibiotic to keep bacteria from regenerating. Sometimes brushing and flossing just isn’t enough if you have a gum disease.

  45. QUESTION:
I have a receded gum line on one tooth because i brushed too hard, how serious is it?

  46. QUESTION:
Harder bristles toothbrush can cause receding gum lines?
I recently heard that using medium bristles toothbrush may lead to receding gum lines, and using “soft” bristles toothbrush is better for your teeth and gum. Is this true? I’m used to using medium bristles kind, because I feel it clean better, and with soft kind I always brush harder to get a clean feeling.

    • ANSWER:
yes ma’am the softer ones are better

  47. QUESTION:
What can help my receding gum line. I wont to try and get it back. Can I??
chew for a long time. noticing the big differenc in my teet-they are getting longer because chewing for a long time erodes my gums-how do ya regrow GUMS?

    • ANSWER:
You have gingivitis, which has nothing to do with chewing. Plaque and bacteria in your mouth are causing your gums to recede. There are other symptoms – bleeding and teeth becoming loose. You MUST floss and use a mouthwash to help control this problem. If it is not treated, it can develop into periodontitis. With this condition, you have receding gums and bone loss. Some bone can be regenerated, if done early enough. Gums CAN NOT be regenerated!!! Scaling can reattach the gum to your tooth, but don’t expect huge results. Visit your dentist. Now. Tomorrow is not soon enough. S/he will probably refer you to a periodontist, if necessary.

  48. QUESTION:
how do you fix a receding gum line?

    • ANSWER:
1- The only way to fix gum recession is by gum graft – for example taking a peace of the gym in the roof of the mouth and sticking it on the place where the problem is.

2- To make sure you don’t get gum recession, use a tooth brush that is soft or extra soft. Brush lightly towards your gums.

  49. QUESTION:
    Receding gum line solution/help!?
I notice my gum recedes little bit. I know I brush too hard but I want to get healthy pink gum and white teeth. What is best toothpaste? Best toothbursh? Best mouthwash without alcohol? Please explain to me procedure for a day and a night. I need to reverse receding and I don’t want to feel pain. I am 18 years old.

    • ANSWER:
So basically the problem that you have is called “scrubbing”. Once your gums have receded there is no way to grow them back. You need to switch to a soft bristle toothbrush and start using more of a sweeping method of toothbrushing. Place your toothbrush along the gumline on a 45 degree angle (this makes sure that some bristles get under the gums a bit to clean them out) and then gently sweep away from the gumline a few times. This method is called the “modified stillman” and is very effective at plaque removal as well as avoiding recession. Be good to your teeth, you only get 1 set!

  50. QUESTION:
Lip piercings and receding gum lines?
Will a lip piercing make your gum line recede? How long does it take before your gums start to recede with a lip piercing? Is the plastic jewelry better?

    • ANSWER:
anything rubbing or on your gums will recede.
the reason is, because the gums are irritated so in order to stop that, the gums move as far as they have to, to avoid w/e is touching them or irritating them. It doesn’t matter whether its surgical steel or plastic of PTFE. Your gums won’t go back either, what i do is stimulate the gums with a brush toothpick, and take my lip ring out every once in a while for a couple of days, it helps a lil.

if the crown of your tooth starts showing, it’s best to just take the ring out, because after that happens the tooth may be getting loose since it doesn’t have any support to hold it in place. I get this question a lot at work lol
