Periodontal Disease Treatment

Red Gums

Periodontal disease or Gum disease ranges from gingivitis, which is a simple inflammation of the gums to a more serious form of the disease that causes major damage to the bone and soft tissue that support the teeth.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

The bacteria and other particles present in the mouth combine each other, forming a colorless, sticky plaque on the teeth. If this plaque is not removed by regular brushing and flossing, it can harden and form bacteria-harboring stubborn tartar, which is difficult to remove and requires professional treatment.

Gingivitis: When plaque and tartar are left on the teeth for extended periods of time, they tend to become more harmful and cause the gums to become inflamed, resulting in the condition known as ‘gingivitis’. In gingivitis, the gums bleed easily and become swollen and red. At this stage it can still be reversed by brushing and flossing daily and regular check ups and cleaning by a dental hygienist or a dentist.

Periodontitis: If left untreated, gingivitis could lead to periodontitis, wherein the gums form infected pockets and pull away from the teeth. The plaque rapidly spreads below the gum line and the immune system of the body releases enzymes to prevent infection. The reaction between these enzymes that are helping fight the infection and the bacterial toxins that are present break down the connective tissue and bone that hold the teeth in place. if not treated in time, the gums, bones and connective tissue that support the teeth get destroyed. Eventually the teeth may become too lose and may have to be removed.

Risk Factors of Periodontitis

Smoking is one of the major risk factors associated with the development of periodontitis. Smoking also reduces the efficacy of some treatments. Stress, diabetes and certain other illnesses including AIDS and cancer use up valuable infection-fighting resources of the body, making it more susceptible to periodontal disease. Certain medication including antidepressants and certain heart medicines lessen the flow of saliva thus leaving the teeth unprotected and more susceptible to developing periodontitis.

How to know if you have periodontal disease

Unfortunately symptoms of periodontitis often go unnoticed until such time that the disease is quite advanced. Some of the symptoms include persistent bad breath, swollen or red gums, sore or bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, acute pain while chewing and prematurely loose teeth. Any one symptom or a combination of two or more symptoms could indicate a serious problem, and should be checked by a dentist as soon as possible to prevent any further decay.

How to prevent periodontal disease

Periodontal disease is almost always preventable with proper care and a strict dental hygiene routine. In the early stages, it is also reversible. Some of the things you can do in order to prevent periodontitis include brushing your teeth well and flossing at least two times a day, using fluoride-containing toothpaste. A balanced diet is also a major factor in helping keep periodontal diseases at bay. Avoiding the use of any tobacco products also helps prevent peroiodontitis. Regular check-ups and cleaning by a dentist will keep your teeth at their healthiest best.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Red gums???
I have my first appointment to my orthodontist on Friday, for him to start with the whole braces procedure (what does he do for the first time?) and my dentist told me that I have a faint red line about my teeth due to not brushing well enough. He said that all I have to do is brush better and not worry if it bleeds, cause that just shows I’m doing it right… But I’m getting worried cause I’ve been brushing 2 or 3 times daily but the line is still there. (I bled a little bit too) My dentist said that the orthodontist will definitely not let me get braces till this line is gone. Is it possible for this line to go by friday? (10:35pm here =O) And if it doesn’t completely go, is the appointment a waste of time or will he still do everything he needs to?

    • ANSWER:
Just keep brushing properly and go see the orthdoontist on friday and see what he says

  2. QUESTION:
how do you treat swollen and red gums on a cat?
My 4 yr old cat has swollen and red gums. There no other signs of illness. How can this be treated?

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like gingivitis. Your cat needs to go to the vet for a dental exam and cleaning.

  3. QUESTION:
My golden lab and retriever seems to have red gums. Is there anything I can do?
I have a 3 year old golden lab and retriever mix that seems to have red gums. He has just been tested and there is no health problems. Is there anything I can do?

    • ANSWER:
Are your dog’s gums more red around his teeth? If yes, that may be a beginning of dog dental disease, periodontitis or gingivitis (your dog’s age would indicate that). Has the vet seen his mouth? I’d be surprising if he hasn’t said anything.
It might be necessary to have your dog’s teeth cleaned professionally if there is a large tartar build up.
You should provide teeth-cleansing toys or treats for your dog and (even better!) stick to the teeth brushing routine.

  4. QUESTION:
How are river red gums adapted to drought?
i need to know how river red gums are adapted to droughts. need to write a report

    • ANSWER:
They have slender leaves which can turn to avoid the sun ( I think many other eucalypts do the same thing too). They have a smooth bark and are found on river banks – even if the river is often dry. They grow rapidly and have a dense canopy which helps shield the ground and reduce evaporation.
The formal name of this tree is “Eucalyptus camaldulensis” which may help you do a more comprehensive search on google or similar.

I hope this helps a little

  5. QUESTION:
My kitten has red gums and bad breath. What could be her problem?
I have a 10 month old Siamese kitten that has bright red gums and bad breath. I have taken her to the vet multiple times and the vet is stumped. The kitten doesn’t appear to have any discomfort eating. We have given her lysine. Her teeth are pearly white. We have tested her for FeLV and FIV. Both came back negative. I have three cats all of which are indoor cats. She is the only one exhibiting any symptoms. Any ideas what it could be?

    • ANSWER:
Two reasons. Juvenile gingivitus, or Bartonella virus. There is a specific test for the virus, and dental attention for the gingivitus that she may outgrow.

  6. QUESTION:
are red gums normal after extracting a tooth?
i got my tooth extracted yesterday at 3 because it was infected. it’s still sore is it normal for my gums to be red around the area? how do i know if i have dry socket. how should i rinse with warm salt water?

    • ANSWER:
I had both lower wisdom teeth removed a couple of months ago and developed dry socket in both!

Firstly rest assured the gum will of course be red..it is just irritated.

Dry socket – beleive me you will know if you get this….its very painful. Your whole jaw will ache as will you ear and there will be an awful taste from the wound!

I found the best way to clean the area was to use a syringe. Just a normal small one you can get from the chemist for like 30p. drain it fill of salt water and spray it directly in the wound hole – repeat this several time – this will also remove any food in the hole which can create infection.

Use a antiseptic mouthwash too – best to be safe than sorry.

  7. QUESTION:
what will a dentist do if you have sore red gums?

  8. QUESTION:
Can an expander make your gums red?
I have an expander, and I’ve had it for about a month and a half. I cant take it out because its glued to my teeth, but since yesterday, my gums have been bright red, swollen, and they bleed. Its painful to brush my teeth. Help?

    • ANSWER:
I have to wear one and actually did research and talked to orthodonists to see what you can expect when wearing one.

The answer is a expander fitted properly should NOT make your mouth bleeding or red. This is a indication that it is not fitted properly. Call your orthodontist immediately to have them adjust it for you. If not, infection could set in and you can do some serious damage to your gums.

I wrote a article because expanders are super uncomfortable and I wanted to make sure everyone knew what they could expect( what’s normal, what’s not, what to expect etc.). It’s a good resource but your orthodontist is a better one.

Good luck. Please call your Ortho so you don’t have to suffer needlessly anymore. I hope it works out for you. : )

    • ANSWER:
Bleeding gums during pregnancy is totally normal!
Some health plans even allow for an extra dental visit.

how can i bring back my red gums?
i do smoke. my friends tell me that i still have good lips,,not obvious that i’m a smoker but when i see my gums,,i feel like coloring it red, lol.

    • ANSWER:
Keep your gums healthy by brushing and flossing every day. You could also get yourself a “sulcabrush”. It is a single tufted brush designed especially to clean and stimulate along the gumline. There are also “proxybrushes” to go in between the teeth at the gumline. I just picked up these new “soft-picks” from G.U.M. They are “designed to clean more effectively than wood and plastic picks. A unique pick with soft bristles that clean and massage gums to promote blood circulation and healthy, firm gum tissue”.

Smoking also dries out your mouth so, if you’re not going to quit, try chewing sugarless gum to promote saliva production and add an alcohol-free fluoride rinse to your routine.

  16. QUESTION:
Why are my gums so red and inflamed and why are they growing over my teeth?
I got braces a couple of months ago and recently i noticed my gums turning very red and starting to grow over my teeth! is this normal and what can i do to sort it out?

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like you may have gingivitis. You need to be brushing for two minutes, two times a day and FLOSSING EVERY DAY!! I know it’s a big pain, but it must be done. Do some warm salt water rinses a couple times a day as well to help soothe the gums until you get this under control.

  17. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of bright red gums from Gingivitis to ease the pain until seeing dentist next week?
I floss once each night and brush approx 3 times / day.
I have been using extra mild toothpaste (natural brand) and rinsing with salt water. I avoid spicey food.
My teeth are so sensitive that even salt water in warm water hurts…… as does my ‘ultra soft’ toothbrush and the electric one.

    • ANSWER:
Your question is ambiguous. The signs of gingivitis are bleeding gums and a bright red margin. Yet your hygiene regimen is very good, and this doesn’t seem right. If you still think you have gingivitis, then the use of a chlorhexidine mouthwash (e.g. “Savacol”) will help. “Listerine” is not helpful, and is only supported up by research studies done in-house. Waste of money.
For sensitive teeth however, there can be a few reasons:
      1. Brushing with too much force or with hard bristles;
      2. Too many acidic drinks e.g. sodas (soft drinks), juices, sports drinks, … The only NON-acidic drinks are usually water and milk. This is the most common causes of tooth sensitivity in today’s youth (assuming you are youngish). Sometimes this will also cause a thin band of reddened gums, but this is difficult to notice unless you are a dentist.
      3. A cavity.
For the moment, I would suggest going onto water or milk, and use a desensitising toothpaste (e.g. Sensodyne). Cut out the salt water – that would only aggravate sensitivity and not achieve anything for gingivitis anyway.

  18. QUESTION:
How can I keep my braces were they need to be, to keep my gums from being red, puffy?
My top brace is to high and it keeps my gums all red and puffy also my lower brace is to low. How can I keep them in a good spot.

  21. QUESTION:
How can I get rid of bright red gums from Gingivitis until seeing dentist next week?
    I brush 2 times daily.

    • ANSWER:
If it is gingivitis add lemon juice to your mouth wash to stop the bleeding. But if you have sensitive gums you may be brushing too hard, get a soft bristled brush and take it easy on the gum line.

“don’t forget to floss once a day!”

  22. QUESTION:
Why are my bottom gums red and they STING when i mouth wash ?
like they kinda look scratched up alittle, and its only the bottom gums.and sometimes ( very rare ) i wake up in the morning and my gums hurt. whats wrong with me ?

    • ANSWER:
You might be grinding your teeth at night. I do it sometimes and wake up with a sore jaw, pain in my gums/teeth. It is really uncomfortable. As dorky as this sounds, buy a sports mouth gaurd and sleep in it. It will save you a lot of pain and money. If you continue to grind your teeth you will have a hefty dentist bill down the road

  23. QUESTION:
I have gingivitis-(Red gums and inflamed gum in front of teeth) is there medication to treat that? What kind?
Does peroxide help clean my mouth? Is it too strong that it will make teeth fall out?

    • ANSWER:
Not that I’m aware of but didn’t the dentist talk to you on how to treat it or did you not go and did you diagnose yourself because that could be dangerous you might have other things brewing in your mouth.

But anyways, you gotta make sure to brush at least 3 times a day, floss, look on youtube.com and search for vids that demonstrate how to brush and floss properly and stop eating anything with too much sugar.

So brush floss and ask the dentist if they want you to use that special mouthwash, it’s by script only

No peroxide won’t make your teeth fall out you have to dilute it in water and rinse then spit don’t swallow you’ll die from poision if you do

dont brush too hard and use a soft brush

  25. QUESTION:
Why is my bottom gums sore and red a week after tongue piercing?
i got my tongue pierced last friday, and the process went great! Im doing the after care (washmouth after eating, drinking) and brushing at morning and nite. The swelling is finally going down, and the normal whitish-clear discharge is coming out. BUT idk why my bottom gums are really red and sore? Why is that and how can I help relieve it and make it go away? THANKS ALOT! :]

    • ANSWER:
Because the mouthwash that you’re using is destroying your natural flora in your mouth causing thrush! You should only be using either a sea salt swish after eating or drinking anything except water (1 tablespoon non-iodized sea salt to a full 8oz cup of water) or swishing with a non alcohol based mouthwash such as (my favorite) Biotene. Good luck!

  26. QUESTION:

  29. QUESTION:
My gums are red and have a little dot?
The top right gum of my mouth is red, a little swollen, and has a little white dot, it kinda looks like a whitehead?

    • ANSWER:
You’re one of the lucky people (like me) who gets canker sores-they’re genetic, annoying, and hurt like crazy.

Like the first answerer said-get some warm water, put some salt (maybe half a tablespoon) in it, and rinse your mouth with it. Do it several times a day and it should clear up within 3 days.

An alternative that I like to do if I get a canker sore towards the front of my mouth (because they don’t let me eat without a lot of pain) is rinse my mouth with lemon juice-it helps clear up the sore a lot faster, but it stings a lot (I’ve gotten used to it, but my eyes still water a bit when doing it)

  30. QUESTION:
why is my bottom gums sore and red a week after tongue piercing?
i got my tongue pierced last friday, and the process went great! Im doing the after care (washmouth after eating, drinking) and brushing at morning and nite. The swelling is finally going down, and the normal whitish-clear discharge is coming out. BUT idk why my bottom gums are really red and sore? 31. QUESTION:
Dark red gums and a cold?
I have a cold at the moment, i am also congested. I noticed that in my mouth, my gums are a dark red color and feel uncomfortable at times. Could this be related to my cold and sinus congestion?

    • ANSWER:
If you don’t regularly brush your teeth you need to start now, once the gums go it’s nearly impossible to keep your teeth looking nice for long. I would start flossing once or twice a day (at least until it gets better) and brushing, also find a good rinse.

Crest Pro Health is a really good one that keep infection away, it’s alcohol free so it doesn’t burn to much in your mouth and within a few days you should see a differece in your gums.

Good luck and if it doesn’t clear up soon I would really try to see a dentist or add and extra cleaning in throughout your day.

  32. QUESTION:
Does a kitten’s gums turn red during teething?
Chance is our bouncing 6.5 month old kitten I brought home from a TNR clinic I volunteered at in July ’06. I’ve noticed his gums, just above the teeth, are red (or really dark pink). I wonder if it’s from teething or may be it’s something else? The rest of his gum area looks good. Since he was feral I have absolutely no history on him.

He’s happy and very playful (to the dismay of his 3 big brothers and sister). He doesn’t act like he feels bad and he’s eating fine.

    • ANSWER:
Yes, gums may become red and swollen. It’s also normal to have bad breath. Believe it or not, some cats get just as cranky as babies do while teething. If your cat looks like it’s in pain, throw an ice cube on the floor. He’ll play with it, but will also lick it.

  33. QUESTION:
Why are my dogs gums dark red?
From what i remember my dogs gums used to be a normal pink but now they seem to be a dark red color. He is just over 2 years old and seems in good health and even his teeth look nice and white, good condition. Do you think this is something i should take him to the vet about?

    • ANSWER:
How long have they been red instead of pink?
As his teeth are good and he’s so young, it’s probably not gum disease.
Is he acting completely normal? No panting? Not at all lethargic or depressed? Not at all uncoordinated? Heavy panting, lethargy and a lack of coordination can be signs of smoke or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Press on the dog’s gums with one finger. If the color returns immediately, he is probably okay. If the color returns slowly or not at all, he is in trouble. He could be experiencing bloat and must be rushed to the vet, you can lose a dog devastatingly quickly to bloat.
He could also be overheated, which you should also treat as an emergency. (If he’s overheated, he might also be panting, disoriented, sluggish or vomiting.)

I think you should at least call the vet. I’m sure it’s free to call, and they’ll determine whether or not it’s an emergency and if you need to bring him in A.S.A.P.

If he’s behaving COMPLETELY normally, he probably just has dark gums.

  34. QUESTION:
Gums swollen, red and yellow after wisdom tooth extraction?
I had my lower, right wisdom tooth extracted 6 days ago. I went to the OS yesterday and he said it is healing slowly (because I smoke and my age).

I looked in the mirror today and the gum around the extraction is yellow with streaks of red, still swollen. Is this normal? I have slight pain still but nothing that I can’t handle.

    It looks really gross/weird though.

  35. QUESTION:
Dark red gums on the upper part. Paler below. Gingivitis?
I noticed my gums have become red on the part where they’re attached to the mouth, and they’re paler below. That means, in the bottom gum, the bottom part is red and the higher is paler.

I also have some generalized pain all over the teeth. Not strong, but constant. Is this gingivitis?

    • ANSWER:
Red gums can mean gingivitis. Do your gums bleed easily? If they do, that is another sign of gingivitis.

You should really see your dentist.

      Hope this helps!

  36. QUESTION:
What are these red dots on my gums?
I found these weird red dots on my gums today. The place where the dots are it is a little swollen and sore but not bad. I spent a few days at a hospital and didn’t really get to brush my teeth very often and when I did my gums would bleed a little, but that’s the only reason I can think of that could cause this. I know it probably isn’t petichiea. Does anyone know what this could be?

    • ANSWER:
Do some warm salt water rinses. If the bumps don’t go away within 7-10 days, get them checked out by your dentist as there could an underlying systemic condition.
It could be a reaction to a medication you had at the hospital, but are not likely related to the not brushing of the teeth.
Keep monitoring them, warm salt water rinses will help soothe and heal.

  37. QUESTION:
My kitty has red gums in the back, but it doesn’t seem to be bothering him, what should I do??
He’s only 2 years old and he only eats dry food (as reccomended by the vet to maintain indoor weight). I am wondering if putting him under for a cleaning is the only solution?

    • ANSWER:
If he is going in for an annual exam make sure the vet looks at the gums. He may recommend a professional cleaning. It won’t “bother” the cat and could lead to more serious dental problems in the future.

The vet can decide if the cleaning can wait another year or six months.

  38. QUESTION:
After red swollen gums, what will happen if patients start doing better home care and removing biofilm?

    • ANSWER:
The inflammation that is causing the redness and swelling will go away in a week to 10 days if you remove all of the plaque by brushing and flossing. You gums will then return to a nice pink color and be tight around the teeth.

  39. QUESTION:
A Part of my Gums is Really Red and Really Swollen?
About an hour ago, I felt a pain between my teeth. I looked in the mirror and there it was. The part of my gums between my canine tooth and my incisor was swollen and red. It was bleeding quite a bit, and was pretty swollen. The bleeding stopped, but it is still pretty swollen. I have gingivitis and sometimes my gums swell, but they have never swollen this much. Any help?

    • ANSWER:

  40. QUESTION:
How can i get help with red gums?

    • ANSWER:
red gums is a sign of unhealthy gums.

you can go to a dental hygienist to get a thorough scaling of your teeth to remove the calculus (harden plaque) as they product toxins that irritate the gums.

once the sourse of inflammation is removed, with proper brushing technique and good oral hygiene, your gum would return back to normal.

My gums are red and kind of puffy. They don’t bleed all the time, but they do every once and a while.

If not; What will the Dr. do? And will it hurt?

    • ANSWER:
Continue brushing at least twice a day.

      Cannot miss brushing at night.

Get yourself proxy brush to go underneath the wire and around the brackets.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

At night after brushing and flossing rinse with “ACT”, the fluoride rinse to prevent cavities.

Also, rinse with luke warm salt water (1 glass of water and 1 pinch of salt) at least once a day.

Your gum condition will improve significantly before your scheduled appointment.

my daughter is 23 mos old and her gums are swollen and very red. They also bleed very easily. What is this ?
My daughter is 23mos old. Her gums are very swollen and red, and they bleed very easily. What could this be? How should I teat this? Or should she be taken to see the Doctor?

    • ANSWER:
Happened to me a few times, it is usually a disease related to gingivitis. Go to a doctor or a dentist they will probably proscribe a drug called Flagyll that will clear it up.
Make sure you do not wait, if you do the gums will start pulling up from the teeth and they do not re-grow.

  48. QUESTION:
Can Anbesol make gums dark red?
I use anbesol maximum strength to numb pain from recent dental work but my gums have been getting a dark blood red on that side of my mouth. The bottle suggests using it only 4 times a day but I have been averaging about 8 times every HOUR. Could the anbesol cause my gums to be the dark red they are? My gums don’t hurt they are just dark. They are usually a very light pink color.

    • ANSWER:
      Krissy,
As a dentist, I would recommend you discontinue the anbesol. Yes, anbesol can damage you gums. Your tooth should not keep hurting. You really should see your dentist about the persistent pain. I am a root canal specialist and have done many root canals for people who continued hurting after they had a filling or crown placed. This may not be true in your case but it sounds possible.
      Hope this helps.
      Steve

  50. QUESTION:
my cat has red gums close to her teeth, is it gingervitis?
if so other than going to the vet what can i do for her?

    • ANSWER:
Brush her teeth with an enzymatic toothpaste made for pets that’s okay for them to swallow. Usually meat flavored.

If the gingivitis is really severe and she also has a lot of tartar build up on her teeth, she probably need a dental cleaning as well as antibiotics for the gum infection.
