Periodontal Disease Treatment

Sore Gums

If you have sore gums and you have passed the stage of teething, something is wrong. Your gums only get sore to indicate that there is an underlying problem. The leading cause of sore gums in adults is the onset of gum disease, also known as gingivitis or periodontitis. If you don’t fully remove plaque on teeth it eventually hardens into a substance called calculus. The only way to remove calculus is through scraping; the degree of scraping relates to the quantity of calculus on the tooth.

By the time you experience sore gums, you can be pretty sure that you have some active gingivitis. The calculus provides a perfect setting for anaerobic bacteria to set to work. Lying there against your teeth and gums, the bacteria create toxins that cause an infection in the gum tissue. Your gums may begin to appear red instead of pink, and you will develop pockets in the gum tissue around the base of your teeth in excess of 3 millimeters. Granted, 3 millimeters doesn’t sound like much, but when it comes to teeth, it is huge.

If you want to stop the process before it moves beyond some sore gums, this is the perfect time to initiate some home based gingivitis treatments. Just as effective, if not more so, than many of the commercially based products, home care can be much less expensive. An initial cleaning, planing, or scaling cycle may be necessary at the beginning of your treatment, but with good oral care and gum treatments at home, you can expect to see healthy gums emerge once again.

It is estimated that 40-80% of adults have gum disease. Most of these people don’t even realize that something is wrong since a majority of dentists don’t counsel their patients properly about early gum disease. Any sign of gum soreness or bleeding is abnormal and should be tended to promptly. Gum disease doesn’t wait, and neither should you.

    • ANSWER:
      What you need to find out is why they are hurting. You probably need better oral hygiene. You should floss daily (and floss properly), brush 2-3 times and use mouthwash. If you do this your gums will not hurt. Your probably have a bad case of gingivitis. You need to see your dentist. They can put you on a routine that teach how to probably take care of your mouth. I have been where you are. Now I have no problems. It all becomes habit.

    • ANSWER:
      The first time I got pregnant I got inflammation of the gums. So this time, when my gums got irritated when I was 3 weeks pregnant, I knew that I was pregnant if that makes sense.

  6. QUESTION:
    Gum stimulating tooth brush and now sore gums?
    I recently bought a new toothbrush (I think it is an Oral B) which has a brand new feature (I saw it on a recent commercial, so I bought it): gum stimulator.
    Why do the gums need to be stimulated?
    Also, after a month, I have noticed my gums seem to feel a little sore, a couple spots are kind of inflamed a tiny bit and might bleed when I brush.
    What the hell???? I bought a name brand, high quality tooth brush and this is happening to me? What gives?

    • ANSWER:
      With anything dental..when you haven’t been taking care of your teeth prior to gum stimulation..you will bleed and/or have inflammed gums. The purpose of the gum stimulation it to agitate and remove plaque that may have settled at the gum line. Just like with flossing, if you haven’t flossed in a while, your gums will bleed. It is your mouth’s way of cleansing infected areas. However, it the bleeding is persistent and doesn’t subside after a few days of regular brushing and routine health care..seeing a dentist is MANDATORY!!

  7. QUESTION:
    Are sensitive teeth and sore gums and abdominal pain a pregnancy symptom?

    I am trying to conceive so pregnancy is entirely possible.

    • ANSWER:
      I have no idea about the gums, but with my three pregnancies I would get cramps kinda like period cramps but sometimes a little higher, whenever I didn’t drink enough water, remember 8 glasses a day. This would happen especially during the first trimester.

  10. QUESTION:
    Are sensitive teeth and sore gums a pregnancy symptom?
    I went to the dentist a few months ago and had some fillings done. Everything was fine until recently my gums are swollen and slightly sore and my teeth are sensitive to pressure, hot and cold. I’ve had other pregnancy symptoms as well such as nausea and increased sense of smell.

    I am trying to conceive so pregnancy is entirely possible.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes, definitely. By the time I was 2 months pregnant, I could no longer wear my retainer because it was plastic and it applied pressure to my gums and it made them so sore and bleed. Just make sure you go to the dentist every 6 months and let them know you are pregnant so they take the proper precautions with x-rays. Good luck!

  11. QUESTION:
    How do i cure sore gums?
    I have sore gums, mainly around my front teeth and think they may be receding. I am young (in 20′s) so not sure whats causing it or how to stop it. Sometimes they bleed when i brush my teeth.

    Suggestions appreciated… thanks

    • ANSWER:
      If your gums are bleeding then it indicates early gingivitis. This is reversible – so don’t panic yet. Invest in a good toothbrush, mouthwash and dental floss and make sure you start a good oral hygiene schedule. Also watch your diet – avoid fizzy drinks and excess sugar. This should help.
      Ultimately however, you should go to your dentist for a check up. They may recommend a trip to the hygienist – this will remove hardened plaque (calculus) which you won’t be able to remove easily.
      However – if they are only bleeding on brushing, it is unlikely they are receding.

  12. QUESTION:
    Sore gums on upper back left side of mouth and left side of neck sore too?
    My gums near the left side of my upper wisdom tooth feel swollen and sore for the past two days and just today i noticed pain when pressing below my left jaw on my neck.
    Ca this be anything serious?

    • ANSWER:
      It’s probably not serious, but requires some action. It sounds like you have a minor gum infection that is affecting the lymph nodes on the same side. The home remedy is to rinse with warm salt water several times a day and to take advil as needed. If it hasn’t markedly improve in 7 days, then go in to see the dentist

  13. QUESTION:

    How long are your gums sore after a tooth extraction?
    I had my upper left molar extracted ten days ago.Ever since I left the dentist I havent had any pain just my gums a lil sore. Ive taken and finished my medication and I still dont have any pain.I was just wondering how long are you gums suppose to be sore?

    • ANSWER:
      I think it all depends on the person. I have had two teeth pulled in the past, wisdom teeth, and each time I had different experiences. With the first one, I was only sore for a few days. With the second one, I was sore for a few weeks. I wasn’t in any pain, but my gums were very tender. I wouldn’t be alarmed, if you aren’t in any pain. Just avoid chewing in the spot, to let the gum heal.

  15. QUESTION:
    new labret piercing and sore gums already?
    I know gum recession is a major possibility but I’ve had this for two days only and already my gums are sore. Is this normal?
    wow that was quick.
    thanks so much, i’ve had other lip piercings before but none that were this irritating initially but it’s nice to know it’s nothing unusual!

    • ANSWER:
      Don’t freak just yet. :) First, your gums aren’t used to the metal stud irrating them 24/7. Your gums are going to need a little time to adjust to the foreign object in your mouth. The post they pierce it with is also much longer to accomidate for swelling so its going to be a little bothersome once your lips goes down to normal.

      I would suggest just giving it a little time and keep your piercing clean. It takes a little while to adjust.

      Peace.

  19. QUESTION:
    Why is my bottom gums sore and red a week after tongue piercing?
    i got my tongue pierced last friday, and the process went great! Im doing the after care (washmouth after eating, drinking) and brushing at morning and nite. The swelling is finally going down, and the normal whitish-clear discharge is coming out. BUT idk why my bottom gums are really red and sore? Why is that and how can I help relieve it and make it go away? THANKS ALOT! :]

    • ANSWER:
      Because the mouthwash that you’re using is destroying your natural flora in your mouth causing thrush! You should only be using either a sea salt swish after eating or drinking anything except water (1 tablespoon non-iodized sea salt to a full 8oz cup of water) or swishing with a non alcohol based mouthwash such as (my favorite) Biotene. Good luck!

  20. QUESTION:
    Could it be my new toothbrush that’s causing sore gums?
    I just bought the Oral-B Pulsar toothbrush, and recently my gums have been unbearably sore! The pain is all over my entire lower gums, not in one spot like with a canker sore. At first, I blamed my running out of SLS-free toothpaste and having to use regular crest, but that was a month ago and this just started this week.

    Any advice? Thanks!

  21. QUESTION:
    Recently I took 20 painkillers in 4 days 2 deal wit a toothache and sore gums due 2 n extraction. Is that bad?
    I took 20 painkillers within 4 days because I had a really bad toothache and my gum was sore because i got another tooth pulled. I’ve been loosing sleep because of the pain also, but i feel guilty or disappointed in myself because i took so many. Is the amount i took bad?

    • ANSWER:
      You don’t need to feel guilty or disappointed in yourself for taking pain killers when you are in pain. That’s what they’re for! It’s actually far less healthy to “tough it out” through pain — pain puts stress on your entire system, as does not getting enough sleep due to it.

      The amount you took is okay. If you’re still in a lot of pain, call your dentist and let him know.

  22. QUESTION:
    How long does it take for sore gums to heal once you eliminate gingivitis?
    I had a mild case of gingivitis (but no dentist in my area has an open appointment) so I started vigorously brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash. It has caused a lot of bleeding and pain, but I saw an improvement in my gums and their color. However, now my gums hurt like hell! It has been four days and I am popping ibuprofen every four hours to suppress the pain. How long does that pain usually last for? I have not been able to eat anything solid for a week now.

    • ANSWER:
      You are right bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease. even though they bleed when you brush them this is the only thing that will make them better but i would advise on not brushing your teeth vigorously as this can cause the gums to be damaged and receed. continue flossing and use a mouthwash specific to gum disease like corsodyl
      do you smoke? as this is a significant factor in gum disease
      you need to find yourself a dentist asap as in severe acute conditions of dental disease you may require antibiotics
      good luck x

It usually last a few days and the pain is absolutey horrible. Any ideas what it could be?

    • ANSWER:
      A great many tooth and gum disease problems can be avoided by simply controlling the anaerobic bacteria population in your mouth. You cannot actually destroy the bacteria permanently as they are always present in your mouth-over 20 different varieties! Plaque, that sticky but invisible film that we find our teeth when we awake each morning, is formed by bacteria. If you do not remove this layer of plaque with proper oral hygiene, it will cause gum disease because it will harden into tartar.

      Tartar is important in the prevention of gum disease because it serves as a barrier between saliva and the anaerobic bacteria responsible for periodontal problems. Saliva is rich in oxygen and specialized enzymes that naturally control the harmful bacteria populations in our mouth. However, saliva cannot penetrate behind tartar which is why a teeth cleaning is the best gum disease treatment once this hardened layer is present. If the tartar is not removed, then advanced periodontal gum disease will form when the bacteria and infection spread below the gum line.

      There are a number of factors that may cause the anaerobic bacteria population to swell and cause gum disease, including:

      * Poor Oral Hygiene
      * Smoking
      * Poor Diet
      * Stress
      * Dehydration

      Gum disease prevention is simply a joke if you do not practice good oral hygiene. Not only must plaque be removed, but also food particles and other sources of decay. However, the removal of plaque is difficult because it clings to every part of exposed surface on our teeth. Therefore, brushing, flossing, and the use of an all natural mouthwash is recommended when trying to prevent gum disease from starting. However, once periodontal problems arise and spread below the gum line, treating gum disease will not be possible with simple oral hygiene and surgery may well be required.

      Smoking not only decreases the rate of salivation within the mouth, it also depletes the body of precious vitamins and minerals that help the immune system function properly. Smoking literally triples the chances of getting periodontal gum disease and it may even slow or completely halt the progress of treatment if the condition does develop.

      Our diet also plays a big role in gum disease prevention because every body function is ultimately tied to what we consume. Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants is highly recommended as they help eliminate toxins from the body and decrease your odds for needing gum disease treatments later on down the road. Foods that are rich in antioxidants include:

      * Carrots
      * Cabbage
      * Spinach
      * Green Algae

      Stress can also cause gum disease along with a host of other medical problems. People with high stress levels over extended periods of time will have weak immune systems, tend to sleep less, and ultimately deplete the body. When other factors cannot account for the condition, stress reduction techniques may be recommended as a viable gum disease prevention technique.

      Because saliva helps control anaerobic bacteria populations, any activity or substance which induces dehydration should be avoided or at least compensated with increased water intake. Some known activities/substances known to increase odds of tooth and gum disease problems are:

      * Drinking Coffee
      * Using Dietary Supplements
      * Drinking Alcohol
      * Excessive Exercise

  35. QUESTION:
    Is it possible to get a canker sore on your gums?
    On the side of my mouth, on my gums, I have what looks like a canker sore.
    It is pretty painful, and I was wondering if it might be a canker sore. And what I should do to help it heal.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes. I have gotten them most of my childhood years and throughout my life. They are not as frequent. I have gotten them a lot as a child and had to have them “burned” out.

      I have also gotten them when I bite the inside of my mouth.

      Stress can cause them also. I now have a prescription from my dentist in case I get anymore. It is a paste and it works wonderfully. It doesn’t burn like saltwater or things like that. The only thing I do not like about it is that it tends to spread out on your teeth. It is is called It is called Triamcinolone Acetonide Dental Paste USP, 0.1% . If you go to your dentist, ask him/her about it.

  36. QUESTION:
    How to treat sore gums?
    It really hurts to brush my teeth on one side of my mouth, because of sore gums. I figure the best way to treat it would be to keep brushing in that area to clean it, but it hurts like hell. Is there a less painful way to take care of this, besides seeing a dentist?

    • ANSWER:
      Well, try using Listerine! The mouthwash will burn and after awhile it’ll hurt less. Chances are you have gingivitis, and if you have sores on the inside walls of yoru mouth use a canker soar medicine with cottonballs. Try not to eat alot of junkfood especially candy and sticky stuff……drink more milk. The calcium might help build stronger teeth? But I would see a dentist right away! It might be something more than you realize!!!!

      Sore throat refers to the inflammation of the pharynx, or back of the throat. It occurs frequently when a person has a cold or an attack of influenza. This inflammation may also involve the tonsils and adenoids if these have not already been removed. An irritating condition of the throat may range from the harmless to the potentially serious.

      Symptoms: In case of acute sore throat, the patient complains burning and dryness in the throat followed by chills, fever, and some hoarseness or laryngitis. The lymph glands along the sides of the neck may become swollen and tender. The back of the throat may become very red and even covered with a greyish-white membrane. The patient may find difficulty in swallowing, especially during the acute stage. There may also be postnasal discharge if the irritation has spread to the nasal passages. The patient with sore throat, caused by ‘ Streptococcal’ germs suffers from high fever and sharp pain with swelling.

      Causes: Sore throat is mainly caused by bacteria or a viral infection. Many different kind of ailments can give rise to this condition. The most common of these ailments are common cold and influenza. Other diseases which can causes sore throat are tonsillitis, mumps, sinusitis, measles, and diphtheria. Even leukemia on rare occasions may lead to sore throat. Other causes of this disease are excessive smoking and talking, frequent use of voice as in certain professions like singing, acting, and teaching.

      Treatment: The patient suffering from sore throat should fast on orange juice and water for 3-5 days, depending on the severity of the condition. He should take orange juice diluted with warm water every two or three hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during this period. The bowels should be cleansed daily with warm water enema. This should be done twice daily in more serious cases. A wet pack should be applied to the throat at two-hourly intervals during the day, and also one at night. The procedure is to wring out some linen material in cold water, wrap two or three times round the effected part, and cover with some flanner. The throat may be gargled several times with warm water mixed with a little salt. A hot Epsom-salt bath, taken daily during this period, will be highly beneficial.

      When the more severe symptoms subside, the patient may adopt an all-fruit diet for three or four further days, taking three meals a day of juicy fruits such as orange, apple, pineapple, and papaya at five-hourly intervals. Thereafter he may gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on seeds, nuts and grains, raw vegetables and fresh fruits. The daily dry friction and deep breathing and other exercises should form part of the daily health regimen.

      Home Remedies: Certain home remedies have been found to be beneficial in the treatment of sore throat. One such remedy is use of mango (aam) bark which is very efficacious in sore throat and other throat disorders. Its fluid can be applied locally with beneficial results. It can also be used as a throat gargle. This gargle is treated by mixing 10 mL of the fluidextract with 125 mL of water. The herb belleric myrobian (bahera) is another valuable remedy for sore throat. A mixture of the pulp of the fruit, salt, long pepper (pipli) and honey should be administered in the treatment of this condition. The fried fruit, roasted after covering it with wheat flour, is also a popular remedy for sore throat.

      Betel leaves (pan-ka-patta) have proved beneficial in the treatment of this disease. The leaves should be applied locally for obtaining relief. The fruit of the betel tree, mixed with honey, can also be taken beneficially to relieve irritating throat cough.

      The bishop’s weed (ajowan) is valuable in treating sore throat. An infusion of the seeds mixed with common salt can be used beneficially as a gargle in acute condition caused by colds. The spice cinnamon (dalchini) is also regarded as an effective remedy for sore throat, resulting from cold. Coarsely powdered and boiled in a glass of water with a pinch of pepper powder and honey, it can be taken as a medicine in the treatment of this condition. The oil of cinnamon, mixed with honey, also gives immense relief. A gargle prepared from fenugreek (methi) seeds has been found very effective remedy for treating sore throat. To prepare this gargle, two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds should be put in a litre of cold water and allowed to simmer for half an hour over a low flame. It should be allowed to cool to a bearable temperature. It should then be strained and entire quantity used as a gargle.

      The leaves of the holy basil (tulsi) have also been found beneficial in the treatment of this condition. The water boiled with basil leaves should be taken as a drink and also used as a gargle in sore throat.

      The patient should avoid rapid changes in temperature like hot sunshine to air-conditioned rooms. He should avoid cold and sore foods which may irritate his throat. To prevent the disease, a person should avoid touching tissues, handkerchief, towels or utensils used by the patients suffering from sore throat.

      Suffered the same problem like you.

      Hope this helps, Good Luck.

  49. QUESTION:
    How can I stop my gums from getting sore?
    I have good hygiene in my mouth, brush two times a day for 3 minutes, and use a mouth wash. My gums have lately been very sore, especially on three particular teeth. I need some tips on how to both prevent and handle it!

    Thanks in advance!

    • ANSWER:
      Change the toothpaste you are using if it contains fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate plus other chemicals you can’t pronounce. All that is junk and damages the body. The mouth wash is probably made of chemicals that are drying out the tissues and is bad for your health as well.

      Three things I would suggest to solve this problem. 1) Get a real toothpaste like the Peelu brand that has none of the chemicals in it, 2) Get some Neem Oil and Neem Bark and make a mixture of the two that forms a paste and apply it to the gums morning and night. Within a day or two the problem should be gone, and then 3) Do some “Oil Pulling” that has been done for centuries that far exceeds anything a typical mouthwash can do, it sanitizes the mouth of staph, strep, bacteria, viruses, and fungus. To do this, take a tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around in your mouth for 2 minutes and then spit it out, do not swallow it because it will be loaded with germs.

      good luck to you

  50. QUESTION:
    What causes sore gums behind molars?
    The last two or three days i’ve had a very sore spot behind my molars on my left side. It feels similar to when you bite down on a chip and a little piece gets stuck in there, but i’ve flossed and prodded and brushed and have found nothing in there. I’m wondering if anyone’s had this happen before and has advice, or if I should make an appt. with my dentist to get it checked out. Thanks!!
    I had all four of my wisdom teeth removed five years ago.

    • ANSWER:
      you probably got some food to slip behind your gums. IF you have an oral irrigator use it. You can swish water arround trying to loosen it up.It gets in your gums you cant brush or floss it out on molars. If you dont want to wait make a dentist app they have irrigators that can do it fast.
